KEY DATES – TERM 4 Term 3 Reflection
Term 3 was an incredibly busy, yet enjoyable time in Year 4.
Grandparents & Special Friends day was a huge success and
it was fantastic to see so many grandparents and friends in
the classrooms completing activities and checking out what
the students have been up to in class. Term 3 also saw the
Year 4 students celebrate a class mass. Thank you to all
families who could attend the mass it was great to see our
whole Year 4 community together. The cake stall at this mass
raised over $500. In week 4 the students had the privilege of
listening to Isaiah, a refugee from Sierra Leone, speak about
his life and having to leave his country that was at war. It
was a touching experience for the students to hear firsthand
how tough life can be in other countries. Following this
session, the students decided that they would like to donate
some of the money they raised from the cake stall to Isaiah’s
school project in Sierra Leone. What a great action by the
students! Other Term 3 events included, Tri Skills, Life Ed
Van, Hoop Time, District Athletics, Book Week & Italian Day.
FAITH LIFE
Our inquiry this term is a science unit called God looked at everything he had
made, and he was very pleased. Students will explore the Creation Story,
identifying some of the unseen elements of creation; gravity, sinking, floating,
buoyancy and density. They will investigate why God created them and their
importance and impact on our daily lives.
We will investigate these concepts through a variety of science experiments.
Students will use their understanding to design and build a boat that is capable of
floating. The unit of work will culminate in a fun day of sailing at Albert Park Lake
where the theory will be put into practice.
MATHEMATICS
Term 4 will see the students re-visit and extend on some key concepts that were taught
earlier in the school year including the four operations, pattern & algebra and
fractions/decimals.
The students will also be continuing with their daily mental maths activities that have been
a HUGE success so far this year.
Students who have not yet completed the “Principals Times Table Challenge” will be
encouraged to do so during Term 4.
LITERACY
We will continue with CAFÉ Reading this term. Students will receive
focused, explicit instruction and, with the teacher, they will set personal
goals, practise these skills and then follow up to assess their progress. The
strategies that we will focus on come from the four areas of reading -
Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary.
In our writing sessions, we will continue to investigate the writing program,
Seven Steps to Writing Success. We will also explore how to improve
writing through using more interesting vocabulary and varying sentence
beginnings. Our genre focus for this term will be persuasive writing.
Each week we will brainstorm ideas for a particular topic, plan our writing to
ensure that we know the ending, list a range of interesting vocabulary and
use the five senses and feelings to bring our writing alive. On Fridays, in our
BIG WRITE session, students will write their narratives, supported by all the
discussion and shared ideas throughout the week. These topics will be
written on the homework sheet and one of the tasks for the week is for your
child to share their ideas with you.
SPECIALISTS
PE will continue to be held on Thursdays.
Students will also complete a sport lesson on Mondays. In Term 4 we will be
focussing on cricket & handball
Italian and Sustainability lessons will continue as per the timetable in Term 3
