Dear Parents/Guardians, Teachers & Students, Following our School renewal in 2012, St John’s continues to evolve as a place where lifelong learning begins. As a direct feeder to Good Counsel College, I was buoyed to read that GCC was rated in “The Nation’s Top Queensland 100-Secondary Schools “ in the Australian newspaper last weekend. Prep to Year 3 students will participate in the Read to Me spectacular at Tully on Tuesday 18th June. Our students will rotate through 4 reading stations which will be located along Butler and Bryant Streets. Significantly, every school from Silkwood to Cardwell is dressing up in Reading Bug theme costumes and participating in the reading spectacular. In fact, 31 student groups in all…620 kids in fancy dress! After we participate in 4 reading stations, we will converge at the Giant Gum Boot for songs and sausages … free of charge! At this stage, buses are expected to arrive 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Students have commenced training and skill development for the annual Inter -house Athletics Carnival to be held on Friday in week two of Term 3. Events will include; Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump, Sprints (60m or 70m or 100m), 200m, 800m, ball games and relays. I am looking forward to the Parents and Friends Social evening which has been planned for the last Friday of the term, due to commence at 6:00pm with a disco. The P & F are to be congratulated for catering with a FREE BBQ. BYO drinks and a shared salad or dessert. Finally the NSW mighty Blues have risen to the challenge and dominated the QLD cane toads in a brilliant display of Rugby League. The second State of Origin match promises to present an opportunity for NSW to seal the series….. This week in Religion we looked

at the Saints, in particular, Saint

Francis of Assisi. We watched a

video about Francis and how he

became a Saint through the

wonderful things he did. One day

when Francis

was praying in

the Church, the

crucifix spoke to

him and told him to rebuild the

Church. Prep/1 made a church with

match sticks and spoke about what

Jesus meant when he told Francis

this. Miss Harisson

Book Fair Thank you for the overwhelming community support to our school book fair. St John’s sold in excess of $1500.00, making our 30% commission in books incredible! Also, thank you to the Anderson family for their book donation to our school library.

School/Kindy Photos Next Tuesday 11th June is our School and Kindy photo day. Envelopes were sent home on Monday and must be returned on or before photo day. Each child must have their own envelope. Money can be placed with one family member, however, this must be clearly marked on each sibling’s envelope where the money is located. Sibling photo packages will also be available upon request at the office. Extra groups, such as School Captains, can be ordered in the “Special Group” box on the order form. These groups are $12 each.

Mini Vinnies News Today we held our second General meeting for this term. Agenda topics included finalising our blankets by 14th June, and our Free Dress day set for 21st June (last day of Term 2). The theme for the this day is going to be "Aussie Aussie Aussie”. Students and staff are invited to get dressed up in sun safe clothes anything relating to being Australian. (eg: Australian sports, hobbies, heroes, food, produce). There will be a gold coin donation on the day and all money raised will go towards the 2013 Assist a Student Program. A gift of $70 to the program will educate a child for the whole year. This program is managed by the National Council of St Vincent de Paul Society and supported by the local States/Territories. This program helps developing countries such as Indonesia, India, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Mrs DeBrincat

Tomorrow the Kindy will host a Sausage Sizzle for school and kindergarten children. Cost: $4.00 meal deal for 2 sausages on bread and a fruit juice popper. Orders to be written on a brown paper bag (correct change appreciated) and returned to the office. The Prep/Year 1 and Kindy children are preparing for the Combined Assembly next Friday 14th June at 9.00am. The students will present two entertaining items. Families are invited to attend the assembly.
