Messages from Principal

Term 2 concludes this Friday in what has been the most difficult year that many of us have ever experi-

enced due to the pandemic. The current COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us all in so many ways; how-

ever, the resilience and skills learnt have made this period of time more rewarding than ever for our

school. We began this term teaching our students remotely and five weeks ago we saw them return to

fulltime face to face learning.

In these five weeks it has been our priority to resettle our students into classrooms, re-establish routines,

build new relationships and support all students to reach learning expectations. During this term, our

teachers dropped planned learning, designed home learning, developed phased learning for partial attend-

ance and then returned to face to face learning. You - parents and carers, maintained your jobs from

home, became your child’s classroom teacher, refereed between siblings, and maintained relationships in

addition to the many other roles you have in your household.

I couldn’t be prouder than I am of our community (students, teachers and parents) for the resilience

shown at this time. It has been incredible to see how committed our community is to providing our chil-

dren with a quality education and how strongly you have all supported the school. It has been greatly ap-

preciated. I would also like to thank all the staff for their continued efforts in the face of much adversity

during this crisis. Our SASS staff are compassionate, caring and beyond diligent in their various customer

service roles. To my teaching staff, a huge thank you. It is very difficult to convey how much respect I have

for all of you and the efforts that you have made to make remote learning and the return to school based

learning so successful.

Our Teachers make all the difference. I believe that what happens in classrooms each and every day: the

students learning a new concept; the teachers praising effort and student learning; the look of respect and

admiration that teachers and students exchange with each other are the most important aspects of our

school’s culture. All staff work hard to improve the social skills and learning opportunities for every stu-

dent. I would like to thank all staff for the great work they do each and every day because it is they who

make all the difference

At the end of this week students will commence two weeks of holidays. We hope you all have the chance

to relax, as well as enjoy sleeping-in, reading books and playing with friends and family. Staff return to

school on Monday 20 July. Students return to school on Tuesday 21 July.

IT’S HERE!!!!!!!!!

The cooler classroom project has been finalised and we are about to see the commencement of work on the

air conditioning for our classrooms. The work is due to commence in the upcoming school holidays and con-

tinue for at least 12 weeks. This will mean some disruptions to the normal classroom routines. During the

install some classes will have to work out of the library , hall or computer room. For this small amount of in-

convenience we will look forward to the best conditions for learning in the classroom for many years to

come.

Thank you to the many families who worked behind the scenes to promote the need for air conditioning in

order to optimise our students learning. Your persistence and gentle persuasion helped us to be noticed and

now our student will reap the benefits of your support.

Thanks for Watching Over the School

We would like to remind parents that schools are not appropriate places for children to play during school

holidays, particularly when there are works occurring on site. In anticipation, we thank our neighbours and

passers-by for keeping a watchful eye over the school. If you see any concerning activity, we ask that you

contact School Security on 1300 880 021.

Sports Update

The following communication was forwarded to schools by the PSSA sports coordinators at the end of last

week. We recognise that this communication will disappoint many of our students and families who look

forward to inter-school and inter-state competitions. We hope that by keeping our students safe at this

point in time, by strictly adhering to social distancing guidelines, competition can resume again next year:

Attention Principals, Sports Organisers and Interested Staff,

As you are well aware, school sport has been severely disrupted this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As

a result, the Zone PSSA executive has discussed the current situation and have decided to suspend all zone

team sport trials and the zone athletics championship scheduled for terms 3 and 4, 2020. Please note there

will be no progression to higher PSSA levels in any sports this year. Schools can decide if they are able to run

their carnivals provided the appropriate guidelines and restrictions are followed. This will assist schools with

awarding end of year awards or trophies etc. if required. Schools are asked to liaise with local councils before

proceeding to ensure they are following their guidelines, as well as following the Department of Education's

guidelines. This was not a decision made lightly and we are very aware of the angst this decision may have in

our school communities. We acknowledge that many Year 6 students have or will miss many sporting oppor-

tunities this year due to the COVID-19 situation. This is unfortunate but ultimately, unavoidable.

Kiss and Drop

Thank you to all the parents who responded to our survey regarding a proposed Kiss and Drop at our school.

76 families responded to the survey and with those 76 respondents 69 wanted the installation of a Kiss and

Drop Zone. The majority of those wishing to proceed with a Kiss and Drop have been at the school for great-

er than 4 years. which indicated a depth of knowledge regarding access to the school. The P&C are currently

working with Nathan Tilbury to see if this is a feasible project. We will keep you informed of further develop-

ments as they arise.

Regards, Mr McTernan

2020 ICAS International Competitions and Assessment for Schools

Students in Years 2 to 6 are invited to participate in the ‘International Competitions and Assessment for Schools’ (ICAS), run by the University of New South Wales. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every student will receive a certificate and an online result report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take on the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.

ICAS Assessments are now online to allow greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Each ICAS assessment will be conducted on a separate day in the computer lab, beginning at 8am (before school starts) and will be supervised by Mr Parks.

in the staffroom or via zoom. Mark your diary, we’d love to see you there.

P&C Contributions 2020

Late last week we put out a call for P&C Contributions for 2020. With a goal of at least $10,000 to go to-

wards purchasing 2 bottle filling stations for the school, one in infants and one in primary. The photo below

is of the proposed new water stations. In less than a week, 69 out of 252 families have contributed, and we

have raised close to $7,000. Thank you to each and every one of you, whether you have contributed $20 or

$500 or an amount in between, we thank you for your contribution.

For those of you yet to contribute, there is still time. Imagine how much we could raise if at least half the

families in the school contributed!

The best thing is your donation is tax deductible, claim it against your next tax return!

Contributions can be made in the following ways:

Bank Transfer

Please transfer funds directly into the P&C bank account:

Munch Monitor – repeat from last week’s newsletter

A decision has been made to move away from Munch Monitor. We are hoping to have a new system in place

for the start of term 3 and we are working hard behind the scenes to have this happen but cannot confirm at

this stage that we will be ready by then, but we are looking like we will. Once the new system is up and run-

the new system.
