Happy Holidays
This has certainly been a busy term, with another one just round the corner. Wishing
all of our families a safe and happy holiday. We hope you have time to relax and enjoy
quality time with the children. The first day of Term 3 for students is Tuesday 23 July.
The school will be open on Monday 24 July as a Staff Development Day.
Thank you well done
Wow! What an amazing Fete on the weekend! The community feel was buzzing (or
was that just the fairy floss I ate)? Thankyou to the P&C for your work in preparing for
such a fabulous event. Thank you to the parents and families who helped with the set
up and pack up, volunteered on stalls, baked cakes and donated items. Thank you to
our many sponsors and to our staff and students involved with stalls and activities – I
love the way it connected to our classroom learning. Lastly though the accolades de-
serve to be with Ruth and her team of Katie, Mary, Michelle, Alison, Kirsten, Mikaella,
Rachel, Beck, Sally and Corrie for organizing such a successful event. I know these
things take a lot of “in own time organization” which has taken valuable time away
from family but I’m sure all will endorse what a great day it turned out to be.
Thankyou also to all the people who helped move the mulch on the day before the
fete.
Learning Partners
This week many of you have booked up, or will book, an opportunity to meet with
your child's teacher to discuss reports, academic progress and social engagement. The
most important people in the world for us all is your child, so we thank you for active-
ly partnering with the teachers to celebrate achievements and to move forward in the
areas for development. If you did were not able to make an appointment this term
and you would still like to meet with your child's teacher Term 3 please phone the
school.
Why is it important to get to school on time?
Going to school every day, provides the opportunity for your child to achieve their
best school results and engage in positive social experiences. It is imperative that stu-
dents arrive at school on time as it allows children
To be part of the morning greeting
To know what is happening during the day
To not miss out on important information presented at beginning of a lesson
To settle into our school routine a lot better.
To start lessons on time and to understand what to do in class

Debaters visit to Berowra Toastmasters
The Wideview Debating Club was warmly welcomed to the Berowra Toastmasters club last week. It was an
impressive turnout, with 16 of our talented debaters attending to watch and take part in speeches. Stu-
dents got the chance to speak ‘off the cuff’ during the Table Topics round, where they were given a topic
and had to speak for 1 minute without notes or preparation time. Our students excelled at the challenge
and received rapturous applause for their outstanding efforts. There were many proud moments as we wit-
nessed the skills and confidence of our wonderful Wideview students.

Allergies
Anaphylaxis is a potentially life threatening, severe allergic reaction which occurs after exposure to an aller-
gen (usually to foods, insects or medicines), to which a person is already extremely sensitive. We have a
number of students at Wideview Public School with anaphylaxis and similar allergic conditions and our staff
undertake face-to-face and online training in providing an emergency response to this condition. The par-
ents of our anaphylactic and allergic students work hard to educate their children about the risks of sharing
food, as do our teachers.
As this is a potentially life-threatening condition, we ask that you please consider these students before
sending high-risk products such as peanut butter, Nutella and seafood in school lunchboxes.
Please talk to your child about the potential risks of sharing food and ask them to wash their hands after
eating any nut-based or seafood products. Thank you for your understanding, our anaphylactic children
and their families appreciate your support.

Lost Property
Once again we have an accumulated amount of lost property and we need the assistance of parents to
collect any items there. Please go to the walk through area of the rooms at the end of KH. This is facing
the playground equipment at the front of the school. At the close of term, Friday 5 July, all remaining
items will go to either the uniform shop to be sold as second hand uniforms, or to a clothing charity if non
-school items. Non clothing items will be disposed of.
How places change
In the library this term, Year 1 students have been learning about how people and places change over
time. A particular focus has been the 50th anniversary of our school, with children looking at old photo-
graphs of our school and suburb. The children were most fascinated with a Wideview class photo from
1971 featuring a student who is now a teacher at the school. Can you guess who it is? Students were able
to identify where the photo was taken and had their class photograph taken in the same spot. They were
able to share ideas about how and why the school has changed over 5 decades.

It’s Model City in the Library at Wideview!
Students across stages 2 and 3 have been busy building model houses as part of their geography studies in
the library. Stage 2 students have studied the climate differences between Iceland and tropical Australia.
After completing their research the children developed designs and then built model homes that would be
suitable to the different climates. In Stage 3, students have focused on reducing bushfire hazards at home.
Their research has culminated in the construction of model houses that contain several hazards and miti-
gations. All models will be on display in the library until the end of term. Thanks to all the students who
have embraced these challenging projects
with enthusiasm and perseverance.

WINTER WONDERLAND - THANK YOU
Wow! What an amazing day! Thank you to every single person who came, spent money, volunteered,
child sat, counted money, bid on an auction, performed on stage, helped with the rubbish, got dunked or
dunked someone. It was an incredible day. The kids had so much fun.
There is a letter following after from the Fete Committee, so I won’t double up, but I want to say a few
things.
Special thanks to the Fete Committee: Ruthie Wicks, Kirsten Baird, Mikaela Burnett, Michelle Burr, Rachel
Chappell, Beck Christensen, Sally Freeman, Alison Glendining, Corrie Hassan and Mary Savage. Without
you, we wouldn’t have raised an incredible amount of money for the school. $41,000 is a huge amount
of money. Thank you. I must say thank you to the families of these wonderful ladies, a lot of their time
over the last 6 months has been taken up with Fete work meaning they’ve had less time for their fami-
lies, we appreciate the time and sacrifices made.
Class liaisons / stall convenors – thank you. I know how much work is involved in running a stall, your
efforts are appreciated.
To our teachers and staff – huge thanks to those who helped out with the Fete, I know some of you were
there all day. Thank you.
The next question becomes how will we spend the money? Well, some will go towards the huge canteen
upgrade announced in last week’s newsletter, we’re awaiting some quotes for artificial turf for some of
the Infants’ dustbowl areas and we’ve got some small projects we’ve been discussing at P&C meetings.
Our next P&C meeting isn’t til next term but if you have any ideas please feel free to attend the meeting
to raise them.

position to do so, any amount over $2 is tax deductible so you can claim in on your tax return next year
(please speak to your accountant / financial adviser for your individual circumstances). If anyone would still
like to contribute, our trybooking donation page is open for donations via credit card, link is here:

Winter Wonderland
To the wonderful community of Wideview Public School,
Wow, what an incredible day! Thank you so much to everyone who was part of Sunday’s Winter Wonder-
land Fete. I hope you all agree that it was a great success and, on behalf of the fete committee, I am privi-
leged and absolutely delighted to announce that, together, we have raised $41,000 for our school and for
our kids.
It really was such a wonderful day filled with so much fun for everyone, especially the kids! The rain held
off, the sun shone and many thousands of people turned up to support the day. An amazing result!
A few highlights of the day;
The laser tag was a hit with over 200 kids loving racing around the inflatable obstacles to battle their
friends!
The unicorns were a real crowd pleaser and a sell out attraction with 180 kids enjoying a ride
throughout the day
The rides were a hit as ever - 408 wristbands were sold before the day (helped along by our incentive
prize competition to win a laser tag session for 20 kids). A further 108 wristbands and over 700 single
tickets were then sold on the day and lots of fun was had by all.
We raised over $7,000 in sponsorship - thanks to all our sponsors!
We welcomed over 40 private stall holders; some new supporters, some old friends and some par-
ents with their own businesses; all eager to be part of the day. They sold food, candles, gifts, ran
workshops; creating a real market feel and providing people with lots of opportunities to buy pre-
sents for others or treats for themselves.
We had a host of kids entertainment with a kindifarm, the Moving Bodies Mini Movers zone, a Ready
Steady Go Kids activity zone and the RFS providing heaps for our kids to explore and enjoy.
Every single class stall made a profit and we raised many thousands of dollars for our school through
the hard work of many parents. A final amount will be announced soon! 15 class stalls contributed
to this awesome result and it was due to the enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of parents
across the school community. We had such a range of fantastic stalls - and they all looked fantastic.
Thank you so much to the class liaisons and other committed parents who organised the stalls and to
all their helpers. It was so wonderful to have so many people across the school involved and such a
range of fun, inspiring and ultimately profit-making stalls!
Of course we had the Dunk Tank and this deserves a special mention - thank you to all those brave
participants - sorry we couldn’t give you a warmer day but your good humor was very much appreci-
ated and caused many laughs and excitement all day! Thanks especially to Nathan Tilbury, Matt Kean
and Katie Gompertz!
We had two stages (the main entertainment stage and our acoustic zone) packed with performances
from our own school, other schools, dance troops, past students of Wideview and a couple of adult
bands too! It was wonderful to see so much talent and so many people enjoying performing for their
parents, kids and peers.

Your generosity is much appreciated!
Thank you too to our prize donors and to the entire Wideview school staff (teachers, office staff, mainte-
nance staff). Special mention to Mr McTernan who has been a real support from day one in so many ways.
Thank you to all the parents who helped before and during the day and to our year 5 and 6 kids who did us
so proud. Thank you to the class parents, many of whom are class liaisons, who put their hands up to take
the lead on organising their class stall - we know this is not an easy job! To Hornsby Men’s Shed for cutting
our signs, to Brynn Quick and Sion and Miceila Roy for providing power and to Sally Sassart for lending us her
inflatable snowmen! To all those who were dunked for being greats sports! Thanks to the P&C Committee,
notably Kath Edgar and Filip Cloetens, local schools and businesses for helping us to promote the day, APEX,
Nathan Tilbury, Matt Kean, Julian Leeser, Katie Gompertz, Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock, Hornsby Council
for the epic stage, WOOSCH, Nova 96.9, Sam Chappell for design and Periodical Press for the printing. Thanks
to the awesome prize committee; Alice Reynolds, Michelle Bowden, Marissa Calo and Anita Von Korff and to
Kath Edgar for being a whizz on TryBooking! To Ben Searles for being an absolute legend and saving the day
in so many ways! To Carl Glendenning for arranging the generator and to Carl and all the committee hus-
bands for everything they did in the build up to and on the day. To Tom Eisner for volunteering all day in our
acoustic zone. To everyone who stayed back to help clear up the mess, pick up rubbish and to leave the
school as we found it. Thanks to the counting house team especially Rebecca Runnalls, Helen Thackwray and
Mel Perry for being there all day - counting money for hours after all the rest of us had put our feet up!
To friends and family who came along to support the day and to the kids of the school for making it all worth
it.
And of course I want to say a massive thank you to the fete committee who gave up so much to make the
event happen. It takes a huge amount of work to put on an event of this size and this team of remarkable
women have worked very hard over the past 6 months to make it happen. Thanks to their kids, husbands
and bosses for loaning them to us! And girls thank you for your friendship, laughs and sheer bloody hard
work. You are all brilliant and it has been a real pleasure to work with you. And, no, I shall not ask again! I
promise!

And here are the names.

Beck Christensen
Sally Freeman
Alison Glendining
Corrie Hassan
Mary Savage
Thank you thank you thank you.
Lastly I wanted to say how proud I am that, as a school, we decided to donate 10% of what we made on the
day to kids who need the money much more than us. To kids in rural NSW doing it tough and to kids in
Uganda who, more often than not, don’t even get to go to school. To these kids over $2,000 each will mean
so much and provides us with an opportunity to teach our kids how very lucky they are to go to a school like
Wideview in a community like Berowra and to have such opportunity ahead of them.
Here’s to the next one (and finding the next committee!)
Ruth
