DATE CHANGESOpen Day will now be on Saturday 30 July NOT 16 July.

I start today’s article with mixed emotions as we farewell two beloved staff members in the primary school and offer special congratulations to a third.

Sarah Leary, one of our Year 2 teachers and our Prep-2 Coordinator, is taking maternity leave to have her first child. We rejoice with Sarah and pray that all goes well for her and her husband,

Arum, in this time of preparation and we look forward with much anticipation to the birth of their baby.

Shelley Short has taught Year 3 this year but many of you will have had the pleasure of Shelley teaching your children in Year 1. It is with sadness that we farewell her at the end of this term as she goes to join her husband in Western Australia, where he has been stationed for some time.

Both of these ladies have been wonderful blessings to our College and I would like to publicly thank them for their efforts. The energy and the dedication that they have brought to their teaching and the many other tasks they have taken on around the College have been greatly appreciated and they will be missed.

While Shelley and Sarah will be very difficult to replace we have been thrilled with the quality of applicants for their positions. We will be in a place to announce the new Year 2 and Year 3 teachers very shortly.

Josh Whysall, one of our IT technicians, is getting married this Saturday. I am sure you will join with me in wishing Josh and Rebecca all the best for a wonderful ceremony and God’s richest blessing as they begin their life together. No doubt there will be photos in the next newsletter.

It has been a fortnight of excellent sporting achievements for the College teams. Last Thursday it was my pleasure to address our Year 10 students in a special assembly time about meeting the challenge of Senior School and the high expectations we have of them and the expectations they need to have of themselves and each other. The guest speaker was Victoria Haffey, who was our first Year 12 College Captain from the class of 2009. It was such a pleasure having her come and address the students about her experiences at GCCC and her life after school. We shared together in a sumptuous morning tea after the assembly.

I have been able to see first hand some of the Calamity Jane rehearsals and the students are putting together some excellent scenes. Everything is coming together for a top quality show. Reserve your tickets now and support the students and the Arts here at GCCC. The performances will be held in the College theatrette 22-23 July.

Please remember that Open Day will be happening on Saturday July 30 from 10am-2pm. If you know of any families who may be considering GCCC as a school for their children next year please feel free to bring them along. Of course all College families are very welcome to come. In preparation for this day we will be having a working bee on 16 July. There will be more information about that in a flyer coming home with reports. Many hands make light work and we have not asked for parent help in this way for some time, so it would be great to see as many of you there as possible.

On behalf of all the staff at GCCC I would like to thank you all for your support and help in making this a great term. I pray you have a wonderful relaxing break with your family. Remember that the new term begins 18 July.

Mike Curtis

In preparation for our Open Day on 30 July, we are holding a Working Bee on Saturday 16 July from 8am to 12pm.

We want our College to look its best for the approximately 300+ visitors we are expecting on Open Day.

There will be a special focus on grounds beautification so please bring your gardening gloves, tools and energy!

Thanks.

Graham Fraser

Please Don’t Forget the College Working Bee

The cold, flu and swine flu season is well and truly upon us. Please help your children be vigilant in washing hands and covering mouths when coughing. Please remember that it is vital to keep sick children at home.

Primary NewsQUEENSLAND – Beautiful one day, perfect the next

Primary Classes Celebrate our Heroes in Queensland Day Activities.

If you were here at GCCC on 8 June you would have been amazed at the variety of costumes students wore to honour all the heroes of the 2011 disasters for Queensland Day Celebrations this year.

Although some came as the “Mud Army”, there were many others who represented our doctors, nurses, armed forces, fireman, police, SES, helicopter pilots, divers, etc as well as our fauna and

flora. We even had Mrs Rosenberg dressed up as a sweet Queensland pineapple!

Following the grand parade for the Junior School (P-2) – and I must say I was amazed at how much effort had gone into their beautiful costumes – the students rotated through a number of activities supporting the Queensland Day theme.

In the middle and upper primary rotations, students enjoyed working on team building activities (SES workers relay games), trivia Queensland knowledge games, rescue helicopter interactive activity etc to mention just a few. (More photos on page 6).

It was a cold day that Wednesday, but the sense of pride and joy of living north of the border (Banana Benders we used to be called), warmed our hearts.

Book Review – “Have a New Kid by Friday” by Dr Kevin Leman.

I am reading this book at the moment and as a parent, grandparent and teacher, I recommend it to anyone who feels they want to improve their child’s attitude, behaviour and character in a short time. The following is a short extract –“Have a New Kid by Friday isn’t just any old book. It’s a game plan that really works. Even better, anyone can do it. It doesn’t take a PhD in rocket science. Want to have a great kid? Want to be a great parent? Take the Leman 5-day challenge. On Monday, I’ll reveal what your kid’s life strategy really is – and why he continues to do the things that drive you bonkers. On Tuesday, we’ll talk about the 3 most important things every parent wants for their child – and how to teach them in a way the child will never forget. On Wednesday, we’ll take a look down the road. Who do you want your child to be? What kind of parent do you want to be? You can get there with my time-tested “3 Simple Strategies for Success.”On Thursday, we’ll identify the 3 pillars of true self-worth and learn how to develop them in your child. On Friday, you get to be the shrink. We’ll review the principles and the action plan you’ve been developing since Monday and get ready to launch it upon your unsuspecting children.

ACMF’s National Songwriting Competition is now open to all school aged students (Kindergarten - Year 12). With a prize pool of over $30,000, the winning songwriters aren’t the only ones who are awarded - their school is too!

It’s free to enter and there is no limit of entries per person.

Songwriting is a positive form of self expression. It enhances creativity and concentration. We would love your support by encouraging Australia’s youth to put their feelings and thoughts to paper and entering the 2011 National Songwriting Competition.

The best singer won’t necessarily win…the best song will!

Please visit www.acmf.com.au and click on ‘National Songwriting Competition’ for further details. You can enter online or download the PDF to print out.

The “Ask Dr Leman” section provides practical advice on over 100 of the hottest topics in parenting. Read it straight through A to Z or use the index in the back of the book for a quick find.

Then there’s what I call “Fun Day.” It’s my favourite day of all. After launching your plan, you get to sit back and watch the fun . . . and the confusion on your child’s face. It’s a parent’s best entertainment.

This book is available from Koorong Books, Mooloolaba and Woolloongabba. It is also available for borrowing from the GCCC library in the “Parent Resources” section.

Year 4M Constructs Gunyahs

A gunyah is a bark hut and the Year 4 students have been applying their knowledge of the Aboriginal use of plants to construct these shelters. Here are some progress shots of the various styles. Some students planned lean-to style huts while others designed shade structures and enclosures. Here are some of their thoughts during construction:

Jonathan Montgomery thought it was great fun building in class, Shaele Burton made a teepee style structure and was fascinated by what the Aboriginals wore for clothing. Bridie Pratt learned that the Aboriginals used good resources when they built their shelter and Kirra Dodwell thought it was clever that they used their surrounding materials so well.

Primary NewsYear 4 Excursion to Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

Despite waking up to a very cold morning and the predictions of cold, overcast and windy conditions, the weather for our excursion to the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens turned out to be just perfect.

Our teachers took us on a walk and exploration through parts of the park and we all had a picnic lunch on the deck next to the Rainforest Dome. Some of us even saw a chocolate tree…mmm! Later in the morning we met up with our guide and talked about different aspects of Aboriginal life.

Then we went on the guided walk through the rainforest, looking at different trees, shrubs and plants that the Aboriginal people used for food, medicine and making things. Our guide gave us a taste of some things that were sweet and pleasant and some things that weren’t. He even set a candle nut on fire. We also washed our hands with some leaves to make them soft, clean and free from germs. The talk was really educational and fun. We even suspect that the parents who came along learned a thing or too as well.

Our bus trip down was fun with plenty of jokes, stories and some group singing. Coming home we had lots of traffic and we could only move very, very slowly for a long time. It took much longer to get back to school. It was still a great day out and we all learned some new things while having some fun and excitement as well. A big thank you to all the parents who were able to come and help the day run smoothly and safely.

Year 1 Technology ChallengeThe Year 1s’ Technology task this term was to design and make a farm animal out of junk. There was sticky tape, feathers, glue, boxes, pipe cleaners, cotton wool and all sorts of things for them to use.

These bits and pieces soon came together to form fabulous farm animals with the imagination of little minds and busy hands. In no time at all the classroom came alive with perky pigs, cheeky chickens, suspicious sheep and a happy family of horses!

Secondary News (cont.)

On the 3 June Maleny Show Holiday, a Legal Studies class went where no class had gone before; the Brisbane Supreme Court. Once inside the courthouse, we sat in on two court cases, a murder trial, and an attempted fraud and arson case.

Overall, we had a very informative day, seeing and experiencing things we would not otherwise have had the opportunity to.

We may also have done a touch of shopping in the Queen Street Mall.

Thank you Mrs Woolston for organizing such an amazing day for us.

Restock for Semester 2 Now is a good time to check your child’s stationery and equipment so that they are restocked and ready for a new semester. The following is an extract of the stationery list from the commencement of the year: GENERAL STATIONERY • 1 large pencil case• 1 packet of 12 coloured pencils (good quality)• 1 packet of 12 felt pens (good quality)• 1 large plastic eraser• 1 metal pencil sharpener• 1 pair of scissors (158mm or 6.25 inches)• 1 large glue stick (approx. 40g)• Ballpoint pens– 2 blue, 1 black, 1 red• 3 HB lead pencils• 2B lead pencil• 3 different coloured highlighters• Correction tape (not liquid) optional• 1 30cm ruler (clear and non flexible)• 1 Protractor• USB

Uniform IssuesWe have noticed a number of uniform irregularities that we are asking parents to help us address. The holidays are a good time to ensure your son/daughter has all the correct uniform needs to start Semester 2. Please take the time to read page 24 of the Parent Handbook that is on the GCCC website as it outlines specific uniform regulations.

Year 7 Water Colour Paintings

Year 7 have just finished water colour painting (drawn from photographs). They outlined the drawings in pencil first, then built up the colour in layers, before outlining all the detail in pen. The Year 7s are now using photocopies of their masterpieces in a collage. The vibrant colours and attention to detail are just sensational.

Sports NewsBill Turner Cup, Round 2.

On Friday the 17 June the GCCC Under 15 Soccer Squad travelled to Kawana Waters College for its round two match in the Bill Turner knockout competition. The Glasshouse boys were determined to give a good account and work their hardest to beat the other team. As the game progressed, GCCC managed to successfully implement their “Wall of Steel” defensive pattern, thwarting several early raids by the Kawana Boys.

At half time the score was 2-Nil to Kawana, however fitness would be a telling factor in the second spell. Comprised mostly of Rugby League, AFL players and canoeists, the GCCC team displayed plenty of physical courage and strength Despite our team’s perseverance and hard work, Kawana won the game with a final score 6-Nil.

Standout performances for the College were Nathan Siggs, Glenn Morris and Corey Middleton in goal. The final result was very similar to the Scotland V NZ score line in the 82’ Soccer World Cup. The GCCC team played well, improving on their performance last year and looking forward to even better games in the future.

Athletics Note

Due to the significant number of interruptions this term the final events on the GCCC Secondary Athletics Program will occur early next term, during designated lunch breaks.

The events still to occur include the Triple Jump, 1500m, Hurdles and the 16/17yr Girls 100m.

Please note: Those students who have qualified for the Secondary District meet are encouraged to attend early morning training sessions.

Regional Touch – a Tough Competition

Tom Dwan gave his all at the Regional Touch Championships as a member of the Glasshouse District Team.

Tom rucked with speed making many impressive runs through the opposition to score a valuable try.

Jack Boroughs was also brought into the team for the second day of competition and also played well.

The boys team put some great plays together and improved during the carnival.

Primary athletes excelled to become District Athletic Champions scoring the highest total points to win the Aggregate Trophy at the Glasshouse District Athletic Championships for the first time ever. GCCC beat Maleny State School who have dominated this competition for the past eight years. The team also placed second in the average points score behind Maleny. This result is a reflection of students’ talent, dedication to training and desire to do their best.

Ryan Sauer was the star of the day blitzing the 11 year old boys competition winning four events, 100m, 200m, shot put and discus. This amazing success gained him the title of 11 year boys Age Champion. Tom Lunt was 9 year boys Runner Up Age Champion which he won by winning the Long Jump with a fantastic 3.74m jump and placing 2nd in the 80m.

All of our 9 year boys qualified for the 80m final so when it came to the relay they left the other teams in their dust winning by about 30m!

Ryan Einsporn ran a well judged 800m race taking the lead in the home straight to gain a deserved victory. Talented athletes Cameron Shervey and Lucas Tidy ran an aggressive race in the 12 year boys 800m but were just edged out of the win placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in personal best times.

Zac Cathcart was victorious in the 12 year boys Discus which he has now won 3 years in a row. Sarah Smith showed her strength winning the 11 year girls shotput. Nichola Bates gained 2nd place in the 12 year girls long jump with a great first jump of 3.86m, then used her surf fitness to take out 2nd place in the 800m event, looking comfortable throughout the race.

Everyone in the team competed with determination and gave their all to achieve many personal bests. The whole team must be congratulated on their support of fellow team mates and displayed great sportsmanship during the two day competition.

The support from parents and family members was fantastic helping our team become formidable competitors; your help is greatly appreciated.

Secondary Regional Cross Country

Twenty-one athletes travelled to Buderim to compete in the Secondary Regional Cross Country. This is a huge day with each race having up to 170 competitors. We had good results with numerous top fifty standings. An outstanding race by Abbey Bates (Yr 9) saw her cross the line in 10th place. Fantastic running Abbey! Every person in our team ran hard and tried their best. The students’ behaviour was very good and we were proud of the team spirit and encouragement to peers. This is a fun day and our team is getting bigger and stronger as we grow as a College.

Top Ten Finish for Natasha at Regional Cross Country

Six fit and strong athletes from GCCC joined the Glasshouse team to compete at the Primary Regional Cross Country Championships in Buderim.

Competition was fierce and fields were filled with State and National placegetters from around the coast.

Natasha Hoeksema ran a fantastic race finishing really strongly to take out an excellent 9th place in the 11 year girls’ 3km event. Ryan Einsporn also ran well finishing in 16th place, a huge improvement from his 30th place last year.

Harrison Still and Jasmine Small ran solid races to finish 22nd and 27th respectively in their 10 year old 2km races.

Cameron Shervey and Lucas Tidy ran well-judged races, with Cameron working his way through the field in the first half of the 12 year old race. Both boys ran just over 4 minutes per km for the 3km race which is a fantastic pace. Cameron’s dedication to training paid off when he finished in 15th position behind a very talented field of State representatives. Lucas ran steadily and finished in a creditable 25th position.

These six students represented GCCC with pride and proved they are talented athletes with fantastic futures.

Sports News (cont.)Outstanding achievements

Zac Cathcart (Year 7) has excelled at numerous sports this term. He made the Stingrays Under 13 Rugby Union squad at only 12 years of age. Zac will also compete as part of the District Softball team in Noosa during the holidays.

Zac showed his sporting diversity with a first place in Discus at the Primary District Athletics Carnival last week; this is the third year that Zac has been the District Discus Champion. Amazing effort Zac!

State Champions! After only five months of practise, the sky is the limit for our talented cheerleaders.

Forty-five energetic and excited GCCC students embarked on the Logan Metro Sports Complex for our second competition. Our Cheer mums and dads whistled and hooted loudly throughout the five GCCC routines at the World Cup Cheer and Dance Championships in Brisbane last Saturday and Sunday.

Our two High School duo teams performed on Saturday morning, Emily Scott and Rebekah White, our Open Cheer Duo, tumbled and cheered their way into second place with tricks including round off

back-saults. Your technique is impeccable, girls. Well done! Kate Fraser and Lucy Sharpe, our Junior Dance Duo, were wonderful. They danced with synchronisation and awesome energy to finish a very close second. Great job girls!

We finished the weekend with an armload of trophies and a truckload of smiles. The High School Cheer team (13 members) performed a perfect routine to be the 2011 State Champions. It was two and a half minutes of dance, tumbling, stunting and big smiles. Well done girls! Our Primary team (31 members) performed a clean routine which showed our progress and hard work. The girls are moving from strength to strength and their enjoyment is showing in their routine. Good work! Our High School Stunt team (Rebekah White, Emily Scott, Kate Fraser, Lucy Sharpe and Jacqueline Newell) performed a flawlessly skilful routine to place a strong third. Their routine was outstanding! It was executed with great energy, great smiles, high level skills, their transitions were smooth and their stunts were strong and clean. Awesome effort girls.

Thank you to Mrs Stott and Mrs Freeman for their help with the girls backstage. A big thank you to the parents for their wonderful support and continued commitment. You are a vital part of the success of the GCCC Cheerleading program.

I am very proud of the effort, commitment and enthusiasm shown by the girls. I am very pleased with our success in such a short time and believe our girls have the skill level and talent to continue to ‘wow’ audiences. People in the Cheer community now know who we are and that we are a ‘force to be reckoned with’. Our future is bright and very exciting.

Cheerleading is a fast-growing sport full of gymnastic and dance skills combined with cheerleaders being thrown up to fifteen feet in the air or balancing on one hand high above their peers. It is a sport for all body types and skill levels, and I look forward to the growth of cheerleading within our College.

General News Kitchen Garden NewsThis fortnight the Year 2 and 3 classes have been creatively planning and planting out their new Adopt-a-Garden beds. This has proven to be a worthwhile project for the children, encouraging a more diverse knowledge of gardening, responsibility and school pride among our young green thumbs.

You can imagine the squeals of horror from the girls and excitement from the boys in Year 3 as they collected compost from our compost bins only to find they were also home to a legless lizard. After the students were assured that that their lives were not in danger, they worked well spreading the compost over the vegetable beds, ensuring a good crop.

Students in Years 2 and 3 were busy preparing for our Market Day by watering, weeding and skillfully transplanting seedlings of many varieties in mass volume! The Preppies and Year 1 students also contributed by watering and making decorative jar lid dressings for the jams and relishes that were sold on Market Day. Many more seedlings were also potted up for sale on the day. A full wrap up of the day will be given in the first edition of the newsletter in Term 3 but there are a couple of photos on the left of this page.

Year 3s enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and made a very successful impossible pie. The students concluded the dish got it’s name from the fact that it is impossible to get it wrong. Mrs Smith decided that ‘unlikely pie’ would have been a better name for it.

The Prep and Year 1s had a special guest this week, being my kitchen

extraordinaire 13 year old niece, Rocket. Our young cooks loved having a ‘big kid’ cooking yakon salad with them with fresh organic yakon grown in our own kitchen garden.

Don’t forget to save your McCain frozen vegetable and Purely Potato barcodes to raise points for our school to redeem garden equipment for the students to use. A collection box will be located in the Administration Office from next term.

We would like take this opportunity to honour the GCCC P and F for their ongoing support of our Kitchen Garden Program. These wonderful volunteers recognise the value of our young children learning to grow vegetables and prepare them in the kitchen and have been vital contributors since the beginning.

An innovative medical school gives students training for elderly care, the opportunity to live in a nursing home as residents for 10 days. They learn some of the struggles and how small things count. For example, after the experience, one student lowered the door nameplates so it was easier for residents in wheelchairs to locate rooms more easily.

Although students still can’t fully relate, they are better able to serve the elderly in the future.

Sometimes God gives us the opportunity to use the lessons we’ve learned and the comfort He’s given us during difficult times to help others in special ways. A verse in the New Testament says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trouble, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble” 2 Corinthians 1:34
