LEARNERS, LEADERS

I spent two days last week at the Hume Principal’s Network Conference in Tumbarumba. It was interesting to learn about the future directions for education in Australian schools. There has been a lot of work happening in schools throughout New South Wales, Walla included, around the introduction of

computer programming and technology as a vehicle for learning. It was very reassuring to know that our students are at the forefront of using this equipment. The Principals agreed that small schools have

the advantage as their students are able to access the equipment everyday rather than having to share the equipment with several classes.

» From Page 1 Healthy Canteens Policy. Mrs Karen Ofak has been attending information sessions and working with other canteen managers to implement changes to our own canteen menu in order to comply with the new guidelines. There have been a number of items added to the menu for next term.

These new items offer students a greater range of healthy options and have been kept at an affordable price. We look forward to sharing this menu with you at the next P&C meeting on Monday 8th April.

K-6 Assembly

The year 6 students hosted an

excellent assembly last Tuesday afternoon. Many students from K-6 were able to present what they had been learning about in class. Our next Assembly will be held on Tuesday 9th April at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to join us at the school for this event.

On Thursday the 21st of March Walla Walla Public School went to Billionaire Boy. It was a live musical for schools based on a book by David Walliams.

Billionaire Boy is about a boy who is a billionaire that goes to a new school and pretends to be normal because he wants to make a friend. Billionaire Boy succeeds but then all of a sudden his life takes an unexpected turn. Now his mission is to get his life back on track.

I believe that Billionaire Boy is a great musical for kids age 5-10.

Parents of students and other community members are invited to join our students attending a special Easter service on April 10th.

The service will start in front of the school grounds at 9.30am and proceed over to the Lutheran church building for a service including a skit and a few songs.

The non-denominational service will be concluded by 10.45am. All are very welcome to attend.

Last Monday the Walbundrie Small Schools went to Alexander Park to compete in the Athletics Carnival, Tabletop and Gerogery also competed. The first event was the 800m race, we then marched proudly in the parade.

After the parade the boys went to their track events and the girls went to their field events. After lunch girls participated in their track events and the boys had a go at their field events. Next up was the relays! In our team was Evie Torrens, Bill Phegan, James Heir and Isaac Lieschke, they did

amazingly well and came first against Burrumbuttock and Rand. Fingers crossed they make it to Southern Riverina!

At the end of the day we had the presentation. Evie Torrens got age champion for her age group and Walla Walla Public School came second overall!

On Friday we designed and built a house for a pink pig, out of paper straws. We were only allowed to use 12 straws, a little bit of paper and sticky tape.

We put the pig into our house to

see if it fitted. Indiana’s house was too small for the pig.

Mrs Noll made a fan and tried to blow the houses down. Aiden’s house blew down when she flapped the fan. We all screamed

so loud that Mrs Duncan and Miss Lawrence came to see what was happening.

This experience was fun.

On Monday, our entire school helped plant a huge number of vegetables in our kitchen garden. Kindly donated by Howlong Nursery, these plants will be looked after by our school before being harvested later on in the year. This project encourages students to be physically active, eat healthy, and gain practical life skills. Thank you Howlong Nursery for your kind support!

Alyssa Rillotta is proving to be a budding artist with many creative skills beginning to blossom in her life.

In the pictured amazing artwork inspired by Jackson Pollock, Alyssa picked the colours and organised the painters who used educational robots called ‘Spheros’ to create the piece.

Although the painting was difficult, she loves the finished product and thinks it looks like fireworks.

At home, she has almost filled two books with her

artwork and enjoys drawing with pencils to create pictures of TV characters or pets.

Apart from being an artist, Alyssa would love to become an ocean marine biologist or a

general biologist in the future. We’re sure you could do any of these things, Alyssa!
