TERM 1 Semester 1 - VOL 1 31st January, 2020
Transcript of TERM 1 Semester 1 - VOL 1 31st January, 2020
Dean Rogers, Principal
Welcome Back
Welcome back to all staff, students and parents for the beginning of the 2020 year. We have already hit the ground
running with students having the first lesson for welcome and then starting classes period 2. As I said at General
Assembly, staff have returned prepared and ready to go. However, to maximise your child’s educational outcomes
we need to work in a partnership where everyone works together.
To help facilitate this partnership, we have Year Level Coordinators who should be your first contact with the school
if you want to follow any queries regarding your child.
Year 7 Jaryd Wishart
Year 8 Will Stevenson
Year 9 Will Stevenson
Year 10 Paul Robinson
Year 11 Robyn Cocking
Year 12 Robyn Cocking
The start of the year is always very busy and even more so for Year 7’s who are starting in a new and often bigger
school. To assist with the transition, staff are available to help answer questions. Students can ask any staff
member and parents can contact Ms Zoe Ferrier who is the Junior School Manager.
As with new students we have a number of new staff. This year we welcome Mrs Guy who will be teaching
Indonesian and English, Mr Khalid who teaches English and Mrs Champion who is part of the Wellbeing Team at
KTHS. Each have a lot to offer KTHS and will make valuable contributions to the wellbeing and educational
outcomes of all students.
Over the Christmas break I have been tracking the fortunes of the 2019 Year 12 students. A huge congratulations
to all last year’s graduates and leavers for their efforts throughout the year. I am also pleased to announce that
every student who wanted to go to university received either a first or second round offer. Other students have
obtained apprenticeships in building, bespoke cabinet making, child care and engineering, and as auto electricians,
diesel mechanics and excavator drivers, just to name a few. Students are also now working full time for companies
like GrainCorp. From all these industries you can see that work KTHS students obtain are many and varied.
Mobile phones
As you are aware the Victorian Government has banned the use of Mobile phones in State schools from the first
day of school, 2020. It is the expectation of KTHS that if students bring their phones to school they will be turned
off and locked away in their lockers for the whole school day. The preferred stance of the school is that students do
not bring them to school at all. This also extends to sports days and excursions.
I also need to stress that Kerang Technical High School does not have accident insurance for accidental property
damage or theft and that students are responsible for all items brought to school.

Kerang Technical High School Mobile Phone Policy
Rationale for Staff, Parents or Guardians, and Students
To explain to our school community the Department’s and Kerang Technical High School’s policy requirements and expectations relating to students using mobile phones and other personal mobile devices during school hours.
SCOPE
This policy applies to:
All students at Kerang Technical High School and, Students’ personal mobile phones and other personal mobile
devices brought onto school premises during school hours, including recess and lunchtime.
DEFINITIONS
A mobile phone is a telephone with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, with or without a physical connection to a network. : For the purpose of this policy, “mobile phone” refers to mobile phones and any device that may connect to or have a similar functionality to a mobile phone such as smart watches.
Kerang Technical High School understands that students may bring a mobile phone to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school or to extra-curricular activities.
Mobile phones must not be used whilst on school grounds.
Mobile phones must be switched off, and locked securely in
the student’s locker during these times.
The invitation to use any Electronic devices in class is up to the discretion of the teacher of that class and should be documented.
All contact between families and students should be directed through the main office.
The policy also applies to the use of electronic devices by students
during school excursions, camps and extra-curricular
activities. It is up to the discretion of the Principal in
consultation with the trip coordinator whether devices are to
be taken.
The use of headphones is not permitted in class unless under the
instruction of a teacher when being used for educational
purposes.
Where a student has been granted an exemption by the Principal, the student must use their mobile phone for the purpose for which the exception was granted, and in a safe, ethical and responsible manner.
