Term 1 ‘Learning for the Future ‘ 4th February 2015 Dear Parents & Caregivers, Tena koutou katoa, Kamo PRIDE Firstly welcome back from all of us here at school. For those families who are new to our school and community, I would like to extend a huge welcome, and I hope you enjoy your time at Kamo Primary School. I would also like to extend a special welcome to all of our new students and staff who have started in 2015, welcome to you all. We are all extremely proud of our school and it’s achievements and I know your time at Kamo Primary will be fantastic. Just a reminder to parents that, your children receive the best education when you and the teachers work as a team. It’s a parents enthusiasm, support and involvement that inspires children to do their best; and a teacher’s ability to teach what they need to learn. Together we can achieve great things. If you have important information to share with us in regards to your child and their learning, please let us know as soon as possible. The more information we have, the better we can cater for your child’s needs. School Curriculum The overall theme for 2015 is ‘Aotearoa’ with an underlying focus of ‘Our Identity’ – To Tatou Tuakiri’. The focus learning area for term 1 is Social Science. Students will be guided by the question “What makes us who we are as New Zealanders?” Classrooms will explore the theme of Aotearoa in many different ways and I encourage you to talk with and share your own knowledge and experiences around this topic with your children. Throughout the term teachers will focus on building our core school values – Proactive, Respect, Independence, Determination, and Excellence, and building a positive classroom culture. Throughout the first four weeks of this term, teachers are focusing on establishing routines, as they need to spend time getting the classroom culture and environment right for learning. If you would like to know more about what’s happening in the classrooms, please see your child’s teacher. We would also like parents to have ongoing contact with teachers regarding homework expectations, as these are different for each syndicate/class. School Structure & Staff At Kamo Primary, teachers and classrooms are organised in to three teams – Kowhai Syndicate New Entrants, Years 1 & 2, Rimu Syndicate Years 3 & 4, and Kauri Syndicate Years 5 & 6. Mr. Leathley in Room 5 is Associate Principal for Kauri, Mr. Soole in Room 12 is Associate Principal for Rimu, and Mrs. Bowker in Room 18 is Associate Principal for Kowhai. Staff Changes for 2015 – Miss Sheldon Thomson is the new teacher in Room 3, she has a great teaching background and lots of experience and knowledge to share with the students and staff at Kamo Primary, welcome Sheldon. Other changes include a newly created position of SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). Mrs. Raewyn Garelja has been appointed to this position. In the past, Raewyn was Kamo Primary’s RTLB so her experience and knowledge will benefit our school greatly, welcome Raewyn. Mr. Soole has returned to his role as Associate Principal in Rimu syndicate after being in the hot seat, otherwise known as the Principals chair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Soole for being an outstanding Acting Principal in my absence last year and I really appreciate the work he has done to keep our school moving forward. Just a reminder that all classrooms have an open door policy and we are more than happy at anytime to discuss your child’s learning and personal needs. School Attendance Every day counts towards your child’s learning. Regular attendance at school makes a big difference because it gives children the best chance to learn. They improve their reading, their writing and other skills they will need throughout life. If your child is away because they are sick, attending a tangi or funeral or has a medical appointment, we need to know when and why your child will be away from school. If they are going to be away from school for several days or more, you might want to discuss getting some work from the teacher. If you have to go away unexpectedly, your child might need to catch up on some schoolwork and you can discuss this with your child’s teacher also. A reminder that...a signed note by a parent or caregiver is required for long periods of absence, and these can be given to classroom teachers or dropped in to the school office. If your child arrives late to school they must come to the school office for a late pass. We hope you have a fantastic year as part of our school community and I look forward to leading Kamo Primary again in 2015. Ken Ward - Principal

SunhatsAll children are required to wear a hat at school when outside. No children will be allowed to play in the grounds unless they have a hat. Hats are compulsory Terms 1 & 4.SwimmingDuring the swimming season each child swims regularly and requires named togs and towel, kept in a bag. A note is required whenever a child is not swimming. The reason for non-participation should be medical only. Each teacher carefully considers the conditions each day. Children are free to leave the pool if they are cold. Children with open sores and head lice are not permitted to swim. It is important that all children with ear problems use the appropriate preventive measures when swimming and their class teacher is informed by the parent. It is a good idea, particularly for the younger children, to wear clothing that they can manage without requiring assistance when changing. Swimming CapsSwimming caps are provided for children from Year 3 up.

Staff Car ParkPlease do not use the staff car park to pick up or drop off children. This area is limited in size and simply cannot accommodate this every morning and afternoon. Road SafetyPlease do not cross the road on the Clark Rd/Bush Rd corner. This is a very dangerous corner and many children would not be able to negotiate this area alone.

As the school is situated on two very busy roads, it is essential that care is taken by children crossing when coming to and from school. Two children provide crossing management under the control of a duty teacher on the Bush Road crossing. This is manned between 8.30-8.55am and from 3.00-3.15pm approximately. All children should observe the rules and parents should likewise set a good example by observing the rules also.

The Clark Road crossing is only patrolled after school. Parents in cars waiting to collect children on Clark Road are reminded of the need to observe the yellow lines prohibiting parking on sections of the school side footpath. Cars parked illegally are reported to the police.

School Rules: GuidelinesThese rules are based on children learning how to take responsibility for their own actions and understanding that whatever course of action they choose, they also choose the consequences that go with it.•Behaviour Care for others and help other children Use manners when meeting, introducing, welcoming, farewelling others Wait courteously for your turn Listen carefully to instructions Look after our property•Out of Bounds The following areas are out of bounds for play -carpark -native reserve•Trees Children are to be encouraged to look after the many trees on the grounds. •Playground Occasionally balls are kicked or hit over the school boundary. One child should seek permission of the duty teacher before retrieving the ball.

No pupil is permitted to leave the grounds at any time unless given specific permission by a teacher. Everyone should be outside on fine days. Children may go inside for toileting or to return lunch boxes etc to bags. On wet days when children can go outside, areas unsuitable for playing will be marked with a flag. When a child behaves unacceptably they will be temporarily removed from the playground. No collectible cards are allowed at school at any time

Wanted- Large egg trays needed for Art. Please send along to school.

Lunches Wednesday only- Please go to the www.thelunchboxclub.co.nz to order lunches on line. This has to be done before 8.00am. If you have ordered online last year you will need to change their room number on the website.
