put into place after Mexico won their independence from Spain and was based on states’ rights. (States have the right to make decisions not the federal government)

Rights because they were use to that type of government in America.

of 1824 was a landmark document because it was the first constitution in Texas.

B. Law of April 6, 1830B. Law of April 6, 1830

1. In attempts to control the number of Anglos in Texas, Mexico outlawed immigration into Texas by Anglos, but encouraged Mexicans and Europeans to move in.


2. The Law of April 6, 1830 also put customs duties on all goods entering from American into Texas. (Taxes)


3. This new law limits Americans so much that it is the turning point in relations between the US and Mexico.

1. Santa Anna comes to power when Mexico is facing turmoil, and he ignores the Constitution of 1824.

~He is able to put more power in the federal government and ignore the needs of the state

Turtle Bayou Resolutions that pledged their loyalty to Mexico and supported Santa Anna but Wanted:

3. Mexican officials quickly became involved and made momentary peace.

1. To prevent other conflicts, Stephen F. Austin and other leaders met at the convention of 1832 to discuss Texan’s needs and wants:


1. The repeal of the Law of April 6, 1830

5. Creation of Public schools6. Support the true Constitution of

2. Stephen F. Austin set out to deliver this message to the Mexican officials, but he was refused an audience.


3. By this time though, Austin is so frustrated with the Mexican government he calls for Texas’ independence.


4. In reaction to Austin’s declaration, Santa Anna agrees to the resolutions passed in the Conventions of 1832 and 1833 except for giving Texas’ independence from Coahuila.


5. Upon Stephen F. Austin’s return to Texas from Mexico, his letter asking for Independence was intercepted by Mexican officials, and he is arrested for treason against the Mexican government.

E. Armed Conflict BeginsE. Armed Conflict Begins

1. After Stephen F. Austin’s release from jail, he returns to Texas, but realizes he cannot make peace.


2. A cannon was currently at its home in Gonzales Texas and colonists refused to give it up without written orders from Mexico.


3. About 160 Texans come to their aid to help protect the cannon- promising to use it if necessary.


4. The Texans fired at the Mexican troops who retreated to San Antonio, while waving a flag that said “Come and Take It” to prove their defiance to Mexican government.


5. This became known as the Battle of Gonzales and was proof that Texas was willing to fight Mexico.

F. Army of the PeopleF. Army of the People

1. Texans began to form their own army to protect themselves from Mexican attacks.


2. Sam Houston is elected to be the commander of the military in Texas.


3. Stephen F. Austin and other leaders are sent to write the “Declaration of the People of Texas” to again speak of their loyalty to Mexico but to show their disapproval of how Mexican officials have ignored the Constitution of 1824.
