Focus Day
On October 17th, four separate groups of Tenor High School stu-
dents and staff visited four Wisconsin historical sites as part of our
annual Focus Day. Students visited Old World Wisconsin located in
Eagle, the State Capitol in Madison, House On the Rock in Spring
Green, and Kohler Arts Center located in Sheboygan. The students
had a wonderful time experiencing places in their home state that
they may not have had in the past.
At Old World Wisconsin, students explored the open air museum
that portrays the living conditions and daily life of immigrants in
19th century Wisconsin.
Staff and students were engaged in a guided tour of the State
Capitol including a view from the capitol’s observation deck, and
then enjoyed lunch on State Street.
Students on The House On the Rock tour enjoyed the amazing ar-
chitecture, eclectic collections, and unique rooms, gardens and
streets of the incredible man-made retreat.
In Sheboygan, students visited the John Michael Kohler Art Center
in the morning and viewed a variety of art exhibits. The afternoon
included lunch and a round of disc golf at historic Vollrath Park on
the shores of Lake Michigan.
success at Tenor, at MATC and beyond is im-
portant to us, and partnering with parents is es-
sential to making sure that each student at Tenor
has every opportunity to reach his or her poten-
tial.
Lastly, just a reminder that if we do need to can-
cel school because of inclement weather, make
sure you are tuning in to TV channels 4, 6, 12, and
58 for a listing of school closings. This information
will also be posted on Tenor’s Facebook page. In
general, if MPS is closed due to inclement weath-
er, Tenor will also be closed.
It is hard to believe that we are only a few
weeks away from winter break! This school
year has been flying by and the students
at Tenor High School have been doing a
fantastic job and their hard work is being
recognized. On October 30th we had our
first of four incentive days for this school
year. Students could earn the incentive by
meeting a certain set of criteria: no more
than two absences, no more than two tar-
dies, no office referrals, and a 2.0 GPA.
Students who met these criteria earned ice
cream and open gym time. One hundred
students, more than half of Tenor High
School, earned this incentive! Our second
incentive opportunity is scheduled for De-
cember 19th. Students who meet the same
criteria will be eligible to participate in a
movie and refreshments during the school
day. Our goal is that 100% of Tenor stu-
dents will be eligible to participate in the
incentive day on December 19th!
As the weather gets colder and the snow
starts to fly, we see student attendance
drop. Being in school is incredibly im-
portant and attendance on a daily basis
will help your child excel and be the best
possible student they can be. We at Tenor
understand that it may be more difficult in
the winter months to get your child to
school; however, please make sure every
effort is made to have your child here eve-
ry day, and on time. Missing even one day
of school puts your child behind and, often
times, it is difficult to catch up. Your child’s
Trees For Tomorrow
Eagle River, Wisconsin
A group of twelve Tenor students and two teachers attended Tenor’s
annual Trees for Tomorrow trip in Eagle River, Wisconsin from Novem-
ber 5th to November 8th. The Trees For Tomorrow program provides
hands-on learning experiences aimed at helping students better un-
derstand our natural resources and become well-informed, responsi-
ble citizens on environmental issues. Tenor students, along with stu-
dents from other schools, participated in lessons involving tree identifi-
cation, forest measurements, tracking wildlife, testing river water quali-
ty, and using a compass. Students also traveled to Ottawa National
Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to do some hiking.
Interested in being a Trees for Tomorrow student? Application process
is in October of each year. Hope to see you next year!

Teacher Spotlight
Hello and Happy Holiday Season from Tenor! I love teaching social studies, and would like to
share a few great things going on in my classes. World history is a class designed for 9th grad-
ers, and our freshmen are absolutely FABULOUS. We studied the ancient world – students
earned exceptional test scores studying the rise of Rome and the greatness of ancient Egypt.
I enjoy teaching freshmen, in part, because it allows me to see exactly how students have
grown when they enter my sophomore U.S. history class. In U.S. history, I have been really ener-
gized and inspired by our students’ writing ability. 10th graders are developing strong writing
and critical thinking skills. My professional development goal is to learn how to teach writing
more effectively, and our kids are definitely stepping up to the challenge. Students have writ-
ten profound and insightful essays analyzing the film “12 Years a Slave.” We’ve covered U.S.
history from 1492-1865…. Next we will take on the 20th Century.
Teacher Spotlight
My English classes are hard at work into the first semester. English 10 classes are working their
way through Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, a novel which gives a western audience
insight into the culture, heritage, and traditions of the Igbo people as well as the impact that
colonialism has had on Igbo societal constructs. As students read, they must also deconstruct
personal biases that they approach a text with, leaving the experience a more empathetic
and open person.
English 11 students are hard at work on their Genius Hour! Projects. Genius Hour!, a concept
originally piloted by Google, allows students to pick out any topic of choice that they’d like to
learn more about. Example topics include how to computer program, the mechanics of dog
training, and deconstructing the narrow standards of beauty for women. All families are cor-
dially invited to Tenor’s first annual Genius Hour! Fair, happening during your student’s class
hour 1st, 3rd, or 4th) on Thursday, December 18th. If you have questions, please feel free to call
or email me at (414)390.0829 or [email protected].
