Bishop Joseph Warren Walker, III, the charismatic pastor of Mt. Zion Bap-tist Church of Nashville, Tennessee, is a shepherd with the spiritual convic-tion, moral aptitude and old-fashioned wisdom to return a people to God.Reared in Shreveport, Louisiana in the 1970s, Bishop Walker grew up in a household parented by Rosa and Joseph Walker, Jr. Bishop Walker states that his father was a strong disciplinarian, and businessman. “My summer days, throughout most of my youth, were spent working with my father. I gained my strong work ethic through that experience.” His father, who also served as a church deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School, instilled in the family a reverence for God and a love for a good education. “With both foundations, we kids believed that we could master the future,” says Bishop.

Bishop Walker received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Univer-sity in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a Master of Divinity degree from Vander-bilt University and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton University. In addition to Bishop Walker being the shepherd of Mt. Zion, he currently serves as Bishop of Senior Pastors in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fel-lowship International. In July 2013, he was chosen as the International Presiding Bishop-elect of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship In-ternational to succeed International Presiding Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. Bishop Walker is also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity. He is married to the former Dr. Stephaine Hale. She is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neonatology at Vanderbilt University. Needless to say, both Bishop and Dr. Walker agree that their most joyous accomplishment to date has been the birth of their beautiful daughter, Jovanni Willow Walker, who was born in May of 2012.

In 1992, at the age of 24, Bishop Walker began his pastorate at Mt. Zion with 175 members. Presently, the ministry has grown to over 28,000 and continues to grow at a phenomenal rate of over 1,800 souls per year. Under Bishop Walker’s leadership, Mt. Zion’s ministry has expanded beyond its original location in the Historic Jefferson Street Corridor to seven weekly services in three physical locations and includes not only www.mtzionanywhere.org, its fourth church location, but also other virtual outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. In April 2006, his leadership also expanded to Jackson, Tennessee where the Zion Church became the first church plant of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

As philanthropists, in 2010, Bishop and his wife, Dr. Stephaine Walker, founded the non-profit Dr. Joseph & Stepha-ine Walker Foundation. The Foundation is committed to helping people help themselves and to helping those around them lead productive and satisfying lives. The mission of the Foundation is primarily advanced through education, mentorship and outreach. The Foundation gives thousands of dollars each year to deserving students also awards one scholarship in the name and memory of Bishop’s late wife, Dr. Diane Greer Walker. A prolific writer, he is also the author of nine books, including the highly anticipated November 2013 release, LeaderShifts: Mastering Transitions in Leadership & Life.

Born in Nashville on October 26, 1944, the first of four children, Richard Allen Lewis, Sr. majored in Business Administration at Tennessee State University. Following graduation from TSU in 1966, he attended the John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science and earned an Associate’s Degree in Mortuary Science. His father, who died in 1959, owned and operated not only Lewis and Smith Funeral Home, but also Lewis Cab Company. At age nine, Lewis began working as a dispatcher at the taxicab office and later managed the family cab company through his college days. His mother sold her interest in the funeral home in 1960. Upon graduating from mortuary school, Lewis planned to es-tablish himself as a mortician. “But when I looked around and saw that there were 22 Black morticians in the city, I felt that perhaps it

was not the time,” he says, “so I thought I would just continue to run my mother’s cab company.” By then there were over two dozen cabs in the fleet, and business was good. After about a year, however, he was getting restless. In 1968, Lewis entered the management training program at a large majority bank in Nashville and went onto become the first Black Business Develop-ment officer and branch manager. The last leg of the odyssey was complete when he was assigned to the corporate offices as a commercial lending officer. In 1978, he resigned from the bank to become the Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Citizens Saving Bank and Trust Company, which, ironically, was located in the building that housed the office from which Lewis was a taxi cab dispatcher. Founded in 1904, Citizens ranks as the second oldest minority owned bank in the nation, Lewis had been on the job only a few days when the bank President died, and less than a week later he was named President. A little over a year later, the Chairman of the Board and grandson of one of the bank’s founders also died, and Lewis, then only 35, took on the additional responsibility of Chairman of the Board. With an aggressive management style and a commitment to the community, Lewis expanded the services of the bank. The bank’s assets had zoomed from approximately $9 million to $34 million when he left the bank in 1984 to devote more attention to his family business, primarily Lewis and Wright Funeral Directors. In the past ten years he has expanded his funeral business, which is now Lewis and Wright Funeral Directors, and opened first a Captain D’s and then later a modern Shoney’s to serve the minority com-munity. He served as Vice Chairman of Tennessee’s State Board of Regents, is a past member of the University School Board of Directors, Girl Scouts of America, Men’s Advisory Board, Small Business Administration Advisory Council, Nashville Crime Stoppers Board of Directors, Tennessee State Univer-sity Foundation, National and Tennessee Funeral Directors Association, and Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. A long-time member of Lee Chapel AME Church, Lewis is serving as a church trustee, as well as a former President of 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee. Behind every successful man there is a woman. In Lewis’ case, his wife, Delores stands and has stood beside him. They have two sons, Richard A., Jr. and Michael A. His mother, Hattie Lewis, continues to have a major influence on his life.

There is nothing in the world stronger than a family bond, which is proved through the Porter family. D’Arcy, Mary, Carlo and Aaron have, as a family unit, developed a thriving and successful business in the Nashville area. Each member brings their own personal level of expertise to the business; D’Arcy’s experience in the roofing industry; the financial expert, Mary; technological master, Carlo; and Aaron the business/accountant. Through their collective experience, knowledge and diligence, a strong successful company, Elite Roofing Company – General Contractor, has emerged. It all began with D’Arcy’s determination to take care of his family. He be-gan working in the roofing business in 1975 as a laborer but was steadfast in his resolve to become a roofer. He began learning and understanding the roofing industry and became quite proficient. As a result of his de-termination, he transformed from laborer to roofer; from a follower to a

leader. Within two years, he was promoted to a supervisory position and began to lead, teach and develop the workforce that he supervised. Lead-

ership and a willingness to share the knowledge were his traits then and remain his traits today. He has installed roofing for federal and state offices; Metropolitan Schools and numerous commercial industrial buildings.

The Porter family, realizing that no African American roofing company existed in the Nashville area, decided to use D’Arcy’s sixteen years of experience to begin their company, Elite Roofing Company of Nashville. With every successful business there are always ups and downs, but with perseverance and determination the Porters proved, that any storm can be weathered when you have the support of the family. Elite Roofing Company of Tennessee has been servicing the Middle Tennessee area for 29 years.

In 2009, with much contemplation, discussion and prayer; a decision was made to change the name to “Elite Roofing Company-General Contractor” which allowed the company to broaden its capabilities and move into the construction industry. Elite’s goal is to always exemplify its name, to be a leader and to be the best quality roofing and construction company in the State of Tennessee. There is a quote that really speaks well of D’Arcy, Mary, Carlo, and Aaron and their contributions to the Jeffer-son Street Community; “Extraordinary Happens When Ordinary People Choose to Do Extraordinary Things”.

It’s an old story;Neighborhood stores lose business and start closing their doors. Housing values fall, the neigh-borhood crumbles. And families suffer. What’s sad is that it happens in the African-American community all the time What’s even is that it doesn’t have to Shop locally whenever you can And support those busi-ness, professional people and organizations that appear in the Tennessee Black Pages. The Tennessee Black Pages is dedicated to the vitality and prosper-ity of the minority community. We simply think you should spend your money where it will do you and you-family the most good. Because the alterna-tive is too costly for all of us.

J. W. ADKINS FUNERAL HOME“Friendly service measured not by Gold but by the Golden Rule.”

The J. W. Adkins Funeral Home came into existence for John W. and Dr. Cecelia N. Adkins on a very cold Sunday, February 15, 1948. Except for each other, and his diploma from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, the youthful proprietors’ assets were limited primarily to selfless love for people and abiding faith in GOD.

For sixty-one years, the J. W. Adkins Funeral Home has enjoyed the privilege of serving its community, sharing the triumphs, the defeats, the joys and the sorrows which are interwoven in the fabric of life. We have been blessed with many loyal friends and well-wishers who have given us their full support, and we appreciate the cooperative relationship which we have with colleagues in our profession.

Today we number among our most prized assets the good will of the community we seek to serve, and the experience gained from so doing. We endeavor to render “Friendly service measured not by Gold but by the Golden Rule.”

In 1984 upon the death of owner, John W. Adkins, William (Bill) Taylor, the nephew of Mr. Adkins, took over as Manager and in January 2007 upon the transition of Dr. Cecelia N. Adkins, became the owner.

Facing the future, we accept its challenge to demonstrate our love for people through serving their needs. We rededicate ourselves to this task, and with God’s help, we shall accomplish it!

We appreciate the cooperative efforts of all our friends who have made possible our journey from “Yonder to Here.” Under the divine guidance of GOD, and undergirded by your continued support, “it does not yet appear what it shall be!”
