Tenby field trip briefingFriday 31st March – Friday 7th April, 2006

Safety and

other matters

Like a ride in a helicopter??? Then this is what you do:

NO ? Then behave safely and responsibly!

• Read the safety notes in the back of the Field-course manual.• Read the safety notes provided to you when you registered, and which were introduced by the School’s safety officer (Dr. Duncan Purdie)

• Stay away from cliff edges – they’re unstable

• Don’t hang around underneath cliffs – do what you need to do, and get away

• Wear your hard-hat

• Don’t walk on slippery rocks

• Look out for one another – someone may be standing below you !

• Bring good waterproofs – it’s Wales, and it’s April

• Bring sufficient warm clothing – it’s Wales and it’s April

• Don’t leave you waterproofs and warm clothing in the caravan !

• Do ensure you take food and drink (lunch) into the field – you’ll need it (don’t leave it in the bus)

• Do take a mobile with you – not for casual use, but as a lifesaver in an emergency

• Listen to the staff and demonstrators when they give you instructions on safety

• DO LET US KNOW BEFORE THE TRIP (in confidence) OF ANY MEDICAL CIRCUMSTANCES (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies). This is important even if you have already declared it, but especially if something NEW has developed that you have not previously declared.

It’s simple to be safe:

Low tide will be between about 14:00 and 18:30 every day

• Still, you need to be vigilant that you don’t get trapped by the sea

• Strong westerly (gusty) winds may occur – they can cause swell and this may cause problems: look out for one another

• Sea-weed is slippery, water is wet (and cold), rocks are hard, and drops are deep

• We will have trained 1st aiders with 1st aid kits, but it’s much better to be careful and not have to call on them…. Really!

Drinking and other behavioural problems -a summary from previous experience:

• Alcohol-abuse promotes hypothermia, and other accidents

• A hang-over is no excuse for missing the next day, but (see above) make sure you stay warm that day!

• Misconduct on the camp site is not tolerated, and the camp boss will remove you (with my help)

• Misconduct anywhere is not considered funny (really!) and you may be removed from the fieldtrip (or worse)

• Adolescent “fun” with other people’s property is not appreciated, and experience tells us that swift action will be taken, commonly involving the police

• The caravans are not dog-houses, and should not look like them when we leave. Breakages will be claimed, so check the caravan when you arrive, and immediately inform us (and camp-personnel) of any problems

• You do not get any brownie points for throwing up over staff or in the bus (really !)

Read the Tenby Handbook (and especially the safety notes in the back)

• You can find it as a pdf file via links on http://www.soes.soton.ac.uk/staff/ejr/tenby2004/index.htm

• We will NOT allow early departures, except in very special cases. People have invariably been trying to get out of their group-commitments, leaving the work to other groups members. This concerns returning the caravan to a decent state!!!! All are to be present on Friday 7th as staff comes round in the morning to inspect the caravans.

• Hence, plan your exit from Kiln Park on Friday 7 April, late morning or afternoon – NOT before!

• Finally, your sleeping bag should be winter-quality. I know it’s April, but it can still get bl****** cold in a caravan there !

How we mark your work?

By relative scaling (see photo )

Attention to detail may be required…..

Check: HOW TO MAP.ppt

on the website

Making a sketch that’s “realistic”, functional, and has essential data ….

It’s not always dry, not always warm – in fact, is it ever….?

You need your handbook in Tenby (=hardcopy of the handbook that is also on the website). You should also ensure that you pick up your working maps and log-sheets from the Academic Studies Office. You are yourself responsible for making duplicate copies and for taking the handbook + maps and log-sheets to Tenby – they are the basis for your assessed work!!!! You also need a sound water-resistant field-notebook.

Pick up your handbook and your “working maps and logsheets” pack at the academic studies office

at SOC (in corridor 566)handbook also available already from the website

working maps and logsheets being finalisedKeep checking the blackboard site!

You should make working copies of the maps and worksheets

Do NOT forget to take the handbook and “maps and logsheets” with you to Tenby:

they form the basis of your assessed work!!!!!

At the academic studies office (corridor 566 at SOC), you should a.s.a.p. sign up on the Caravan

booking list

You will need to bring a Cheque of 10 pounds (I think) when you sign up (only cashed if there are

breakages – otherwise shredded)

There will also be a booking list for the bus to Tenby. Costs to be announced.

You may also choose to make your own way to/from Tenby (note the aforementioned arrival and

departure restrictions!)
