Ten (10) Herbal Medicines in the Philippines Approved by the Department of Health (DOH ) MAIN USE: Anti-fungal (tinea flava, ring- worm, athletes foot and scabies) PREPARATION: Pound fresh, mature leaves. Strain and collect the juice and apply thinly on the af- fected area . MAIN USE: Aids in lowering blood sugar and treating other ailments like cough, diarrhea etc. PREPARATION: Juice the leaves and drink a spoonful daily. For other ailments, the fruit and leaves can both be juiced and taken orally. MAIN USE: Aids in lowering blood pres- sure and bad cholesterol PREPARATION: Maybe fried, roasted, soaked in vinegar for 30 minutes, or blanched in boiled water for 15 minutes. Take 2 pieces 3 times a day after meals. MAIN USE: Treats cough, colds, fever and flu and asthma. PREPARATION: Boil half cup of chopped fresh or dried leaves in 2 cups of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink half cup 3x a day. The Department of Health , through the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Health Care (PITAHC) under Republic Act No. 8423, endorses the use of 10 medicinal plants to relieve and treat various ailments. These plants have been scientifically validated to ensure safety and efficacy. MAIN USE: Relieves rheumatic pains and gout PREPARATION: Boil 1 cup of chopped leaves in 2 cups of water for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain, let cool and drink a cup after meals (2 times day). Can also be taken as salad AKAPULCO GARLIC LAGUNDI GUAVA MAIN USE: Relieves body aches and pains PREPARATION: Boil 2 teaspoons of fresh leaves in 1 glass of water for 15 to 20 minutes and take a cupful every 3 hours. . Leaves may be heated over fire and placed over the forehead for headaches. YERBA BUENA NIYOG-NIYOGAN MAIN USE: Aids in intestinal motility; treats stomachache and diarrhea PREPARATION: Boil 1 cup of chopped leaves in 2 cups of water for 15 to 20 minutes and drain. Take 1 cup every 4 hours. Use as a gargle to prevent cavities. TSAANG-GUBAT ULASIMANG-BATO SAMBONG AMPALAYA MAIN USE: Disinfect wounds and promote healing PREPARATION: Pound the leaves and apply to the cut with slight pressure and wrap with the bandage MAIN USE: Eliminates intestinal worms, particularly the Ascaris and Trichina ( Only dried- matured seeds are medici- nal) PREPARATION: Crack and ingest the dried seeds two hours after eating (5 to 7 seeds for children & 8 to 10 seeds for adults). MAIN USE: Aids in excretion of urinary stones; acts as diuretic; can be used for headache PREPARATION: Boil leaves in water and drink a glass 3 or 4 times a day. For headache, apply crushed and pounded leaves on forehead and temples. NOTE : Although approved by DOH, traditional medicine must still be used responsibly.
