WElComE to our inspiration-filled annual brochure of alumni tours in 2014. Inside youwill find an array of carefully designed, expert-led small group tours to someof the world’s most intriguing destinations. As ever, we have pulled out all

the stops to create a collection of tours which we hope will excite and inspire – a mixture of old favourites and new itineraries toappeal to new and repeat travellers alike.

WHO WE ARE If you are new to Temple World, you might like to know that it was Temple World, with sister company IMA, who actually pioneeredthe concept of Alumni Travel in Britain, the first being tours for the University of Cambridge in 1992. We are incredibly proud that2014 will mark our 30th anniversary of offering first rate academically based tours.

ABOUT OUR TOURSOur ethos is to provide tours which are exciting, entertaining and above all educational to like-minded discerning travellers fromthe prestigious institutions we represent. All our tours are accompanied by an expert on the country, normally an academic, who isable to add so much more to the destination by introducing the wider aspects of the region, whether archaeological, historical, geographic or political. We keep our group sizes small, and we choose our hotels and lecturers and develop our itineraries withthe utmost thought and care.

WHO ARE THE TOURS FOR?We design our alumni tours especially for graduate and staff members of the specific bodies we represent, together withtheir friends and family. We send this brochure only to selected individuals who have enquired about tours before, so if youhave received your copy you are eligible to travel on any of the tours included here.

In Livingstone’s FootstepsVICTORIA FALLS, CHOBE

AND THE OKAVANGO DELTA

8 – 18 March 2014

“Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” was David Livingstone’sthought upon seeing Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) which he re-named VictoriaFalls. Accompanied by naturalist Grant Truthe, small group safari spends three nights exploringthe Falls and includes a cruise on the Zambezi looking for crocodiles, hippo and elephant. Wealso learn about Zambia’s heritage with a visit to the local Mukuni people. We then cross theZambezi into Botswana to spend two nights at Chobe Safari Lodge. With unique birdlife andgame, these waterways are best navigated by boat, where we look for birds such as nightherons, African skimmers and pygmy geese and mammals such as hippo, buffalo and elephant.Taking a scenic flight to the Okavango Delta and the excellent Moremi Reserve, rated as oneof Africa’s finest game-viewing areas. We stay at Pom Pom Camp where we are poled throughtranquil reeds in a traditional canoe and can track great herds by 4x4. In this area impressiveherds of elephant, sable, giraffe, tsessebe, wildebeest, impala and waterbuck can be found.Lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena are also resident and the birdlife is superb.

“The programme was very good, and Grant Truthe was an excellentguide. We saw both lion and leopard at remarkably close quarter in

addition to a visit to the tent by an elephant during the night” – Mr J Theakstone, Livingstone’s Footsteps 2012

“Great is Diana of the Ephesians”CLASSICAL SITES OF IONIA AND CARIA

BY LAND AND SEA

7 – 21 June 2014

The Aegean coast of Turkey provides the setting for some of the best preserved sites ofclassical times. After Smyrna and Pergamon we visit Sardis then explore the hot springs ofPamukkale, surrounded by the Roman spa of Hierapolis. We spend time in the MeanderValley visiting the city of Aphrodisias, which has a superb Museum of Roman Sculptures. A highlight of our exploration will be Ephesus, whose commerce at the time of Hadrian rivalledRome. The site is still magnificent, with its marble streets and wealthy villas and a theatrewhich sat 28,000. Having reached the coast we continue as the ancients did – by sea. TheCeramic Gulf is one of the least spoiled areas of the coast – no holiday villages, few hotels ordevelopments, only uninhabited tiny bays in the most sheltered waters in the Mediterranean, overlooked by the high mountains of the north side of the Gulf. We shall cruise from bayto bay, dropping anchor to visit romantic ruins and magnificent remains such as the Cariancities of Euromos and Labranda, little visited by tourists yet beautifully situated with ruralvillages nearby. As with all our Turkish cruises there will be plenty of chances to swim.

Jewels of the DodecaneseCRUISING THE GREEK ISLES

BY CLASSIC GULET

21 – 28 June 2014

The islands of the Dodecanese run like a necklace around the Aegean coast of Asia Minor, from Patmos in the north west to Rhodes in the south east. Their proximity to the Ottomancoast of mainland Turkey allowed them to become tax-exempt in the 16th century, thetime of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, hence they became known as the “PrivilegedIslands”. And privileged they are indeed today, isles of great beauty set in the balmy climateof the eastern Mediterranean. Their history goes back beyond the Classical world, andone can imagine Homeric heroes and Odyssean mariners charting their course throughthese lovely waters, from Kos, famed island of Hippocrates, to Nisyros, the volcano said tohouse the legendary giant Polivotis. From here sail to the delightful and unspoiled islandof Tilos, once home to pygmy elephants and on to Symi with its spectacular cycladichouses rising up around its beautiful harbour. Finally we reach the wealthy Island ofRhodes, haunt of the Crusader Knights. Travel aboard a traditionally built Turkish guletfully fitted with modern comforts including proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and spaciouspublic areas including a shaded aft dining area and a sundeck with loungers. The dates of this tour have been chosen to coincide with our two week tour in Turkey.

Magical MadagascarTHE ZOOLOGY AND BOTANYOF A GONDWANA ISLAND

17 – 30 August 2014

Uninhabited by man until 2,000 years ago, 80% of Madagascar’s species are endemic, making it possible to witness what happens when an isolated island is left to evolve for 70million years. A host of protected reserves and rainforests contain amazingly diverse wildlife, from impish ringtailed lemurs and ‘dancing’ sifakas to brightly-coloured chameleons, frogsand butterflies. Madagascar is one of the world’s ten biodiversity hotspots and six of theworld’s eight species of Baobab tree (Adansonia) are endemic to the island. It’s also a treasure trove for palaeontologists, with a fossil record creating a ‘time capsule’

for today’s scientists to examine the island’s role in the tectonic history of the SouthernHemisphere. Bird lovers will find an array in each new habitat, with the crested coua andimpressive helmet vanga to be found amongst the six endemic families of birds and morethan 70 species of singing birds and parrots. Madagascar also boasts superb unspoiledwhite sand beaches fronting its Indian Ocean coastline, with a large barrier reef andhundreds of off-shore islands. Private extensions to Indian Ocean beach resorts such as the marvellous Anjajavy, a Relais & Chateau property, are available after the main tour.

“My mind is still full of baobabs, camouflaged chameleons, leaf-tailedgeckos... We had the most fantastic trip and I want to thank you for

The Turquoise CoastCRUISING THE SHORES OF ANCIENT CARIA

20 September – 4 October 2014

In ancient Caria, Turkey, the scenery and sea views are surpassed only by the magnificenceof the ruined cities. We set off in the shadow of the crusader castle at Bodrum, ancientHalicarnassus, and cruise to classical Knidos. Set majestically above its two harbours it wasonce home to the scandalous naked statue of Aphrodite. We find evidence of the Doriansettlement of Asia Minor at Kasara and in eastern Caria through the reed-fringed shallowsof the Dalyan River lies the city of Caunos, with its famous rock-cut royal tombs. Beyond, discover the remains of Lydae and Arymaxa overlooking the Bay of Fethiye, and at themountain cities of Pinara and Kadyanda the views from the ruins are spectacular. Manypreviously un-noted Byzantine remains, especially those on Gemiler, tell of the birth of theearly Christian Church and its final demise under the advance of Islam in this area.

As always we shall travel in comfort aboard classic Turkish yachts with en-suite cabinsand our own Turkish chef. There is plenty of time for swimming in the warm, azure watersof the Mediterranean as we moor in quiet inlets and bays.

“Out in the Dark Blue Sea therelies the Island of Crete” – HOMER

MINOAN CRETE AND SANTORINI

24 September – 2 October 2014

Island of myth and legend, Crete can claim to be home to the oldest civilization in Europe –the Bronze Age Minoans who left remnants here around 4000 years ago. Their sophisticatedand artistic civilization came to an end around 1450 BC, leaving fascinating remains includingfigurines and frescoes, whilst subsequent invaders from the Myceneans, Dorians and Romansto the more recent Arabs and Venetians have also left a wonderful architectural legacy on this beautiful island. We shall stay at Chania, with its lovely Venetian harbour andlighthouse, and Heraklion with its medieval city centre. The impressive palaces of Knossos(now reconstructed) and Malia show the Minoan’s building ingenuity, and even simplerdwellings on the island show evidence of sewage systems, running water and even centralheating, over 1000 years before these were used elsewhere in Greece. To complete theMinoan picture we shall visit the stunning island of Santorini, mooted as a likely location for the lost city of Atlantis mentioned by Plato. Here, recent excavations have unearthed the Minoan town of Akrotiri buried under layers of ash.

“Another enjoyable and successful trip – please pass on our thanks to all concerned. Where shall we go next year?”

– Mr & Mrs Owen, Egypt Uncovered 2013

Ancient EthiopiaTHE EMPIRE OF AKSUM AND THEROCK-CUT CHURCHES OF LALIBELA

25 September – 7 October 2014

The fascination of Ethiopia lies in its ancient monasteries, rock-hewn churches and dramaticmountain scenery. Aksum was the seat of an empire that reached across the Red Sea toArabia, traded with India and China, had its own alphabet and was one of the four greatpowers of the ancient world. We shall visit Gondar’s fascinating castles and the uniquechurch of Debre Berhane Selassie. Then we will look for the gelada baboon in the beautifulSimien Mountains before visiting the legendary sources of the Blue Nile. We conclude inLalibela where, wreathed in mystery, the rock-cut churches of Ethiopia’s ‘New Jerusalem’ have been welcoming pilgrims for almost 1,000 years. The tour is timed to coincide with Meskel, a vibrant 1600 year old festival commemorating

the discovery of the true cross, a piece of which is believed to be kept in Ethiopia. It’s awonderful opportunity to witness an unusual, ancient ritual as huge bonfires are lit, toppedwith yellow Meskel daisies, and magnificently robed priests carrying silver Coptic crossesdance with their followers around the fires, singing, chanting and carrying flaming torches.

Fire and Ice A VOYAGE FROM TIERRA DEL FUEGO

TO ANTARCTICA

1 – 16 March 2015

Antarctica represents one of the world's last pristine wildernesses, a magical place barelytouched by human presence. Heroic feats of endurance, early commercial exploitation, territorial claims and disputes, intense scientific study, extraordinary scenery, superbwildlife, combined with a hostile environment for much of the year, are all part of theallure of Antarctica. Starting in Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego, this cruise on the highly ratedexpedition cruise ship M/V Plancius, crosses the Drake Passage to explore the islands in theBellingshausen Sea and to land on the Antarctic Peninsula.

The vessel was completely rebuilt as a 114-passenger vessel in 2009 and complies with the latest SOLAS regulations (Safety Of Life At Sea). This comfortable expedition shiphas been selected precisely because it is able to get to locations and to land passengersfor extensive visits among the islands and on the continent of Antarctica which the largecruise ships are neither able nor licensed by the IAATO Antarctic agreement to do. It’s the only way to appreciate the scenery and the wildlife of this amazing continent.

“It is an excellent way to get the feel of the continent. We wouldreadily recommend the trip to others (and have done so!).”
