You may have noticed the beautiful garden as you drive into the Temple parking lot. Some of you may remember that for a long time, that area was just dirt and some old play equipment. But thanks to the generosity of Janet Eisenstein and the hard work of our fabulous Green Team, that area has been transformed into the stunning garden we have today.
On Sunday, April 28, we will dedicate our new garden. We will gather at 12:00 pm to enjoy the beautiful flowers and benches and honor the memory of John Oettinger, in whose memory Janet has donated the garden. Afterwards, Janet will generously treat us all to lunch at the Temple. Please RSVP to our office so we know how many people to expect (973-239-1321; [email protected]).
A garden does more than beautify our Temple; gardens can be spiritual places are well. Perhaps the most famous use of the garden metaphor is in Genesis, in the Garden of Eden story. It is there, of course, that the legendary first human beings Adam and Eve, live and learn about the realities of being human. When they eat the by now proverbial forbidden fruit, God expels them from the garden and into the “real world.” Adam and Eve learn that life is no picnic. Life requires work, making choices, and getting back on the right path when we err just. But the Garden of Eden is also something, in the Jewish worldview, that we yearn to recreate. Before their expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve experienced a oneness with God and with each other. Through our performance of mitzvot and our acts of justice, we Jews work to make the world whole and complete (the real definition of shalom, by the way) and to strengthen our connection to each other and to God--in other words, we can create the Garden of Eden once again.
I hope that our little “Garden of Eden” will not only be aesthetically pleasing--it is--but also an inspiration and a reminder to us that just as the garden is beautiful, we are called to live morally and spiritually beautiful lives.
I very much look forward to seeing you on April 28.

At our Passover seder, we re-tell the story of our people’s exodus from Egypt, from slavery to freedom. While not a service, the seder, meaning order, is more like an ancient Greek class with Rabbinic interpretations and questions throughout the story. This order is all contained in the haggadah ה דָּ which means “the telling.” The haggadah is ַהגָּperhaps the most ubiquitous and published Jewish text with many different editions, translations, and publications. Some people collect haggadot (the plural of haggadah), looking for rare editions on eBay. One of the most popular American haggadot is the Maxwell House Haggadah, first published in 1932. The Maxwell House Company wanted to market its products to the growing Jewish population but knew that Passover is when many Jews strictly observe the kosher laws. At the time, coffee was assumed to be a legume which is not kosher for Passover for most Ashkenazi Jews. However, coffee is actually a stone fruit, in the same family as cherries and peaches, so was not a concern. To celebrate this change, Maxwell House went out of its way to make sure the kosher authorities could certify their product as “KFP” kosher for Passover. As such, they went out of their way to market to the Jewish community by providing free copies of the Passover haggadah with purchase of Maxwell House Coffee. This tradition continues to today, and you can get the Maxwell House Haggadah even in boxes of matzah. The Maxwell House Haggadah has changed over the years with new images, updated English translations, adding Hebrew transliteration, gender-neutral language, and layout changes. But, almost 90 years later, it remains an American tradition. Recently, former President Barack Obama used the Maxwell House Haggadah for the first White House Passover seder in 2009. What haggadah do you use at home?
Augustine of Hippo, an early Christian theologian is credited with saying “Qui canit bis orat,” meaning “one who sings, prays twice.” When we look at traditional prayer forms in most religions and cultures, very rarely are the words of the prayers simply stated but are sung. Traditional recitations of the Torah, the Quran, and the majority of the Catholic mass would be sung with unique melodies specific to those texts. We still use these special melodies every time we read Torah. Even certain prayers, like Kaddish, have a spoken rhythm akin to a chant. As a cantor, it is my job to find the spirituality with these melodies and the texts connected to them. I do not treat it as a “song” but as a “prayer.” Rabbi Groffman and I plan the services to have peaks and valleys, with emotional and spiritual heights and depths. The challenge is for us to plan a service that fits the needs of the community, the needs of our congregation that particular week, needs which are wide and constantly changing. For this reason, I look forward to Passover. Passover is a holiday about preserving tradition, time with family and friends, enjoying delicious food, and survival. There is no wonder this holiday happens just as spring begins: after suffering through the snow and darkness, the joys of Passover carry us into the brightness of the future. We serve “traditional” foods and sing “traditional” songs, and we know that our songs are worth double as we are surrounded by our nearest and dearest. I pray that we all bring the joy and spirit of our Passover Seders into the rest of the year. My last class for Hebrew 101 & 102 is April 28. I look forward to next year when we can meet again.
Cantor Feibush
Tradition Explained
It’s been said that you can’t look to the future without remembering your past. Every April we tell the story of our ancestors’ Exodus from Egypt as we celebrate Passover, thus honoring our heritage as we move forward as a Jewish people. Just like our ancestors, our congregation continues to move forward with many new members and new programs. As we continue to build our future, we will recognize our history as we celebrate our 65
th Anniversary of
TSWE with events throughout the year and a wonderful gala celebration this October. While planning for these festivities and looking forward to our next 65 years, we thought it would be helpful to take a look back at the achievements and milestones we have reached in these first 65 years. This article kicks off an on-going series that we will be writing throughout the year, highlighting key moments in our Temple Sholom history. We’ll take a look at who were, who we are and thus help us become who we want to be as a congregation.
This month’s article is called: “In the Beginning: 1953-1975"
We hope you enjoy this journey through our TSWE community’s history located on the next two pages.

From the Desk of the Religious School Director...
As a time honored tradition, we like to introduce some of our newest faculty members to our congregation. Below is a recent dialogue between Morah Allison our First Grade Religious School Teacher and myself, who is in the process of completing her first year here at TSWE.
1) Morah Allison, tell us something about your most meaningful Jewish Experiences. This past summer, I went to Israel on a spiritual journey with six hundred women from all over the world. It was extremely powerful and re-ignited my Judaism. Mammas, I highly recommend if you can swing it.
2) Morah Allison, tell us about your Jewish Family My grandmother is Israeli and grew up in Mea Shaarim in Israel. My mom was raised here and my grandmother moved back to Israel in the 1970’s. I went to Yeshiva in Brooklyn thru 6th grade. I can read, write and speak Hebrew. I’ve been to Israel 3 times and would LOVE to go again with my family.
3) Morah Allison, tell us what you enjoy most working at TSWE. I love the children and seeing Judaism in their eyes. When the kids understand, and make connections it is so powerful. After all, we want these kids to be “good” and enjoy Hebrew school and give them a foundation to have a Jewish identity.
4) Morah Allison, what special rituals do you do with your family around the Jewish Holidays/special events? Since returning from Israel in July, I light the Shabbat candles and say the prayers every Shabbat. In the past, I would light the candles occasionally. Now, I love lighting the candles, saying the blessings and especially love blessing my sons every Shabbat. I’m not always home to light at the exact time of Shabbat, but I make it work for me and my family.
On another, more somber note, the Jewish Reform Movement just recently lost one of its iconic figures, Mr. Al Vorspan. A senior vice-president for the Union of Reform Judaism (and someone who I had the pleasure of meeting earlier in my career), Mr. Vorspan helped organize the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and is most remembered as a social justice icon who inspired the creation of congregational social action committees across North America in pursuit of Tikkun Olam; repairing the world. As members of a reform congregation such as TSWE, a significant component of our Mitzvot Curriculum deals with many of the concepts and precepts he helped inspire and move forward.
Mr. Vorspan is also remembered for marching in the civil rights protests with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, saying, “We came as Jews remembering the millions of faceless people who stood quietly, watching the smoke rise from the crematoria’s. We came because we know that, second only to silence, the greatest danger to man is a loss of faith in man’s capacity to act.”
A towering giant of social justice, Mr. Vorspan died at the age of 95, after a 72 year marriage to his wife who predeceased him. May his memory be a blessing.

The Caring Connection helps temple members during transitional times in their lives. Our committee volunteers provide support after a happy event or a traumatic event. Your involvement could be as easy as a making a phone call. Volunteers can help to deliver or prepare a meal, or help a member with transportation needs. Make this organization what you and your family want it to be. A great mitzvah project may be to visit or spend time with an elderly person. Or maybe bring a pre-paid Shalach
Manot basket to a temple member who can’t drive. Just be involved. It’s easy. You decide how involved you and your family will become.
If you would like to become involved, please contact me through the temple or email me,
Dori Schwartz at [email protected]. Thank you to everyone who thinks of us through a tribute. Your generosity helps us fund programs, send meals to those in need, and present other activities throughout the year.

Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always appropriate, welcomed and provide important revenue. Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for
recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences, and at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our congregation.
