In particular, I was struck by the differences that occurred during a moment of posture and choreog- raphy within our worship. It was a moment when the congregation was invited to, “please rise”. During Jewish worship, there are times when the service leader asks the congregation to stand. We physically elevate our bodies as an act of reverence. Standing also serves as a symbolic ascension towards the heavens, helping us feel connected to the Divine. There are liturgical pieces, like the Shema and Mourner’s Kaddish, during which our com- munity stands. We stand when the ark doors are open, revealing our sacred Torah. At this moment we are reenacting the moment when our ancestors stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Our tradition teaches that we were standing there, as well. Some people in our sanctuary rise quickly and stand at attention when instruct- ed. Others move slowly as they join gracefully in a communal dance of upward movement. Some of us are unable to physically stand and participate with an intentional uplifting of their soulful devotion. In the Temple Emanu- El sanctuary all are invited to rise in spirit. Judaism helps us gain perspective through teachings associated with standing. The Torah teaches us that we are not to stand idly by while our neighbor bleeds. The Tal- mud helps us connect with God when we are instructed to know before whom we stand. One of the central pieces of daily prayer is called the Amidah, the standing prayer, because we are to recite it standing respect- fully as we offer thanks and make requests. We make this offering imaging as if we were standing directly in front of God. When we rise with intention it is an acknowledgment of something greater in the universe. As we enter this new year of 5779, I invite you to “please rise” and find moments of elevation and higher purpose at Temple Emanu-El inside our temple walls and be- yond. Come stand with the generations as the Torah is paraded during our Rosh Hashanah family services. Experience elevated mo- ments of reflection as the haunting sounds of Kol Nidre are heard on Yom Kippur. Gaze upwards through the palm roof while stand- ing in our Sukkah. At this time of spiritual elevation, ask yourself, what you will stand strong for this year? What challenges will you rise to meet? Please RiseStanding on the bimah leading Shabbat services this summer, I found myself notic-ing subtle differences among the wonderful people who filled the pews. In particular, I was struck by the differences that occurred during a moment of posture and choreog-raphy within our worship. It was a moment when the congregation was invited to, “please rise”.

During Jewish worship, there are times when the service leader asks the congregation to stand. We physically elevate our bodies as an act of reverence. Standing also serves as a symbolic ascension towards the heavens,

helping us feel connected to the Divine. There are liturgical pieces, like the Shema and Mourner’s Kaddish, during which our com-munity stands. We stand when the ark doors are open, revealing our sacred Torah. At this moment we are reenacting the moment when our ancestors stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Our tradition teaches that we were standing there, as well.

Some people in our sanctuary rise quickly and stand at attention when instruct-ed. Others move slowly as they join gracefully in a communal dance of upward movement. Some of us are unable to physically stand and participate with an intentional uplifting of their soulful devotion. In the Temple Emanu-El sanctuary all are invited to rise in spirit.

Judaism helps us gain perspective through teachings associated with standing. The Torah teaches us that we are not to stand idly by while our neighbor bleeds. The Tal-mud helps us connect with God when we are instructed to know before whom we stand. One of the central pieces of daily prayer is called the Amidah, the standing prayer,

because we are to recite it standing respect-fully as we offer thanks and make requests. We make this offering imaging as if we were standing directly in front of God.

When we rise with intention it is an acknowledgment of something greater in the universe.

As we enter this new year of 5779, I invite you to “please rise” and find moments of elevation and higher purpose at Temple Emanu-El inside our temple walls and be-yond. Come stand with the generations as the Torah is paraded during our Rosh Hashanah family services. At this time of spiritual elevation, ask yourself, what you will stand strong for this year? What challenges will you rise to meet?

May we all experience a multitude of blessings and a higher level of living and be-ing in the coming year. Shanah Tovah!

President’s MessageStarting next month I will be continu-ing immediate past-president Toby Halpern’s practice of featuring Board Members and other temple volunteers in my monthly message. There are so many wonderful stories to tell and new volun-teers to introduce, starting next month. But first, I must share some features of my recent trip to Israel.

In June, Tanice and I had the good fortune to spend two weeks in Israel. Our two prior trips there had been on tours, in 2004 with Temple Beth Israel and in 2015 with Temple Emanu-El. But this time we were going on our own. We

wanted to get into the neighborhoods, in-teract with locals, and really feel as if we were a part of the country. These experi-ences exceeded our wildest dreams, and here are a few of the highlights:• hearing a few people cheer quietly as our flight touched down at Ben Gurion;• relying on WAZE or Google for direc-tions, I found them poor translations and in metrics;• proudly using my few Hebrew phras-es and finding that taxi drivers, waitstaff, and clerks had no patience with me;• visiting with Janet and Stephen Hiller at their daughter’s beautiful coastal home, complete with safe room;• driving into Jerusalem Friday after-noon as the Shabbat excitement builds;• savoring flavorful, aromatic middle Eastern foods;• staying in an Airbnb near the Ben Yehuda pedestrian street’s stores, cafes, and other people-watching venues;• visiting an artists’ colony and several wineries, including one built adjacent to a community for adults with disabilities to provide them with job training and employment;• seeing Jerusalem lampposts with of-ficial “Trump Makes Israel Great Again” banners, sometimes defaced; • leading my assigned llama, Doby, for a breakfast picnic in the desert;• learning first-hand of the hard work and dedication to country of those turning the arid land into oases of date

palms, grapes, and vegetables; and• driving from Jerusalem to Mitzpe Ramon, observing the changes in terrain, climate, and people.

While there, we also attended the 5-day AJC Global Forum, which led to these wonderful moments:• celebrating Shabbat at Kol Hanesh-ema, a Reform synagogue in Jerusalem;• attending an exuberant Havdalah on the rooftop of Beit Shmuel, overlooking the Old City walls;• singing Hatikvah at the Davidson

Ken Marsh, new TEE president

Center courtyard at the base of the Wall;• communing with 2,400 participants from 50+ countries;• hearing Prime Minister Netenyahu’s address recognizing AJC’s commitment to Israel and commenting on Israel and Diaspora Jews; and• witnessing (from the 10th row!) Aus-trian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s his-toric statements acknowledging Austria’s responsibility to the Jewish people and, for the first time, to the State of Israel—everyone was spellbound! There were so many other inspirational sessions, most of which can be viewed at https://www.ajc.org/globalforumvideos.

I know many of you have also had wonderful Israel experiences, staying with family and friends, or touring on your own, or on missions and tours. I’d

love to chat with you about your trips. Finally, know that details will be shared soon regarding our temple’s June, 2019

tours—one for first-timers, the other for returnees, accompanied by our rabbis. The experience is sure to be fantastic!

BrotherhoodAs we approach a new year at Temple Emanu-El, I look back at the last few months of Brotherhood activities. We installed our new board at the end of May. With the addition of 3 new people—Michael Lauber, Brad Pearson, and Steve Simons—we have a broad range of men who will work together well. In June we had our annual picnic at Turtle Beach, co-sponsored with Sisterhood. We had a record attendance this year—over 80 people! Many thanks to organizer Steve Leavitt and grill master David Steinbach. July saw another co-spon-sored event—the Return of Summer Trivia. Again, there was a nice crowd, over 70 people, and win or lose, ev-eryone seemed to have fun. In August we offered something new—a night at a Charlotte Snow Crabs game, with two hours of unlimited ball park eating. Thanks to Brad Pearson for arranging that.

We’re gearing up for another active year. Don Malawsky and his

programming team have put together a fantastic portfolio of events. We’re planning a couple of Sunday morning breakfasts, a few evening lectures, a jazz concert in December, a bus trip to the Edison and Ford winter estates in February, and a night at the circus in March. Our annual Martin Luther King tribute, co-sponsored with Sis-terhood and the Social Action Com-mittee, is returning to Benderson Family Hall. And our big fundraising event, co-sponsored with Sisterhood, is a golf tournament scheduled for April 7, ably co-chaired by Barry Gerber and Ben Klein. As always, our events are on the temple calendar. Information will always be avail-able through flyers at the temple, the Message from the Temple, and email blasts to our members.

Brotherhood board meetings are typically held on the first Sunday of the month at 9:40 am and are on the temple calendar. They are open to all members interested in attending. Want to learn more about what we do and what goes on behind the scenes? Join us at one of our meetings.

Our next event is Brothers in the Sukkah, scheduled for Tuesday September 25. We’ll spend some time in the Sukkah and have dinner in the Social Hall, followed by a rabbi-led discussion. Don’t let the name fool you—this event is open to all, men and women alike.

On behalf of the Brotherhood Board, I would like to wish everyone good health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in the coming year.

L’Shanah Tovah

SisterhoodAs co-presidents, we are looking for-ward to the New Year and the many wonderful events that are planned for our Sisterhood members. Our new bro-chure for 2018-19 has been mailed to all temple Emanu-El female members.

Please review the brochure for all of our planned meetings, events, outings and volunteer opportunities.

We have a wonderful calendar of events planned for this year. Thanks to Bob and Susan Meisel, we have already had a successful Trivia Night with Brotherhood. Over 70 participants enjoyed a delightful night of challenging trivia and yummy refreshments.

Susan Meisel is chairing the Break-the-Fast meal this year. Please watch for information and solicitations related to this event in the weekly temple emails. This has always been a great time for us to share our favorite dishes and traditions with our friends and temple members.

Barbara Peltz and her Membership Committee are busy planning the New Member tea on October 7 and the an-

nual Paid-Up Membership luncheon on November 18. These events are wonder-ful opportunities to meet members and form new friendships.

We will be partnering with Brother-hood for our biggest fundraiser of the year. The Temple Emanu-El Golf Out-ing will be held at the Meadows Country Club on April 7. It is a great event for golfers and members as well. Linda Weiss and Mollie Sernau have already begun working on the Silent Auction. Please watch for additional information related to this event.

Sisterhood presented the Temple Emanu-El Religious School (TEERS) with a gift of a beautiful picnic table from our funds raised last year.

Our new project, M’Dor L’Dor (Hebrew for ‘from generation to genera-tion) will allow our members to share their time and talents with the children in TEERS. Indicate your interest in this program on the membership brochure when you return it with your dues.

The Gift Shop, run by Alice Cotman,

continues to be a wonderful resource for our temple and Sisterhood.

Alice always finds beautiful items to enhance our lives and fabulous gifts to share with friends and family. The funds from the Gift Shop are donated to Sisterhood for us to use to support the Temple Emanu-El Religious School (TEERS).

We wish you a New Year filled with good health and amazing friendships.

Kathy Docks and Judy Levy

Immediate Past President, Toby Halpern, and her husband Gene thank the congregation for your kindness and caring throughout our grandson Andrew’s lengthy illness, and in the aftermath of his tragic death. Your expressions of support were a source of strength and mean the world to us. This is a perfect example of what temple family is all about.

Bat MitzvahSamantha Leigh FinemanSeptember 29, 2018

It is with great pride and joy that we announce that our daughter Saman-tha Leigh Fineman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah with a Havdalah service on September 29, 2018. Sam, as she is affection-ately known, is a seventh grader at Pine View School where she thrives academically because of her true passion for learning. She is a rower and coxswain on the Sarasota Crew team, enjoys playing the piano, and loves to dance whenever she has

time. She just completed her fifth summer at Camp Micah, a sleep away camp in Bridgton, Maine, her “summer home.” Her love of sleep-away camp inspired her Bat Mitzvah project working with youth affected by substance abuse, at Camp Mari-posa, a JFCS partnership program. She also organized a lemonade stand and donated the proceeds to JFCS for Camp Mariposa. We are so proud of Sam for her hard work and achieve-ment in becoming a Bat Mitzvah and look forward to her special day and celebration.

Israel Corner: A Sneak Peek at the Year Ahead!

Temple Emanu-El’s Israel Commit-tee is preparing for another year of meaningful and engaging Israel programming—and we invite you to participate, learn, uphold, support, and most of all demonstrate your love for the Jewish State.

Entering its third year, Temple Emanu-El’s Israel Committee has overseen a new focus on Israel, plan-ning educational programs on topics as far-reaching as:

• LGBTQ life in Israel• 50th Anniversary of the Six-Day War• Israel Shabbat Dinner• Israeli-style pub night, partner-ing with the Jewish Federation of Sarasota/Manatee• Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli Indepen-dence Day)• Israel’s 70th Birthday• Screening Israeli films• Assisting with Israeli education

and Israel-themed social events for our Religious School students and teens• Celebrating the first night of Ha-nukkah together• Sharing “Show and Tell” items from Israel• Having a delicious Middle Eastern lunch this summer

The Israel Committee’s first event of the new year will be an outing to see Operation Finale, the thrill-ing true story of Israel’s detection and capture of Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann and his trial in Jerusalem. Mossad agent Avi Avner, who curated the blockbuster museum exhibit based on this event, advised on the film and vouches for its accuracy and importance. Other upcoming events will include a Lunch and Learn, an Israeli “book club,” a possible cooking workshop, and—by popular

demand—another “Israel Shabbat” and Israeli-style Shabbat dinner! See the Temple Times and your Inbox for more information and plan to be a part of these great events.

Temple Emanu-El’s Israel Com-mittee wishes you a shanah tovah u’metukah, and says l’hitraot—hope to see you at an Israel Committee event soon! For more information, please contact Israel Committee chair Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman at 379-1997.

Don’t Miss Tashlich!Have you participated in Temple Ema-nu-El’s wonderful evening of Tashlich? If so, you already know not to miss this special night. If you are new to Tashlich, please continue reading!

Tashlich is the symbolic casting away of sins—a very brief service that culminates in throwing crumbs of bread

into a body of water. As participants watch the crumbs float away or sink (or occasionally be gobbled by fish!) they imagine the cleansing of soul and spirit that takes place during the High Holy Day season. Temple Emanu-El holds Tashlich on the Saturday evening between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-pur—Saturday, September 15, at 6 pm. We’ll gather just outside Van Wezel, along the beautiful bayfront, and enjoy

sert as well.“Lunch with the Rabbis” is a chance

to enjoy great conversation with great people—and great rabbis. If you are a regular attendee, you know how fantas-tic “Lunch with the Rabbis” is—and if you are a newcomer, come be a part of the best lunch date in town.

We look forward to sharing Tashlich with you on Saturday, Septem-ber 15.

Fluid Dance with Linda Joffe Resumes September 13, 2018Temple member Linda Joffe once again brings “Fluid Dance” to congregants and the community at large beginning on Thursday, September 13, at 10 am in the Benderson Family Hall. The class is lim-ited to women only. The drop-in fee is $10, and no reservations are necessary.

Fluid Dance is a movement prac-tice that relaxes the nervous system, energizes the body, and awakens the soul through a powerful, free-flowing dance repertoire set to world music and American classics. The class is especially good for women who experience tension and stiffness because of medical condi-tions or inactivity, and want to explore

a gentle way of bringing free flow back into their body, especially the joints. No dance experience is necessary.

In creating the class, Linda draws on

her experience in modern dance, yoga, NIA, the Expressive Arts and Shake Your Soul, in which she is certified by the Leven Institute for Life Movement. She also incorporates elements of Let Your Yoga Dance, a chakra-based move-ment program in which she is in the process of becoming certified.

“Thank you for the creativity, calm and joy that you bring to us each time,” wrote one participant recently. “I always leave class with a sense of peace.”

All classes are held at 10 am on Thursdays and are generally offered twice a month. The dates for 2018-2019 are: Sept 13, Oct 4, Oct 18, Nov 1, Nov 15, Dec 6, Jan 3, Jan 17, Feb 7, Feb 21, Mar 7, Mar 21, Apr 4, Apr 18, May 2, May 16, and June 13.

We’ll also enjoy apples and honey, learning about the shofar, and a special Rosh Hashanah craft!

Tot Shabbat fun will continue with a special event in the sukkah on Saturday, September 29—stay tuned for all the de-

tails. Although Tot Shabbat is designed especially for fami-lies with children up to age six, all are welcome.

And of course, once the High Holy Days begin we are proud and happy to offer our very special Fam-ily Services. On Monday, September 10, and Wednes-day, September 19, at 1:30 p.m., families are invited to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with Rabbi Brenner Glickman and Rabbi Michael Shefrin. Spiritual, upbeat, welcoming,

and meaningful, Temple Emanu-El’s High Holy Day Family Services are truly a beautiful experience for all ages. Join us and feel free to bring your family and friends as well!

Temple Emanu-El’s programs for young families continue all year long—from the popular weekly “Parent and Me” classes held at the Susan Schwaid Early Learning Center of Temple Ema-nu-El to monthly Tot Shabbat programs to monthly family Shabbat services featuring special children’s activities. We also hold family mitzvah projects and learning opportunities throughout the year, and all are welcome! For more information, or to have your young fam-ily added to our Tot Shabbat email list, contact Rabbi Elaine at 379-1997.

We look forward to a good and sweet year with your family. Shanah tovah!

Blessing of the AnimalsA Fantastic “Blessing of the Animals” June 3 was a very special afternoon as Temple members and community guests brought their beloved animals to Temple Emanu-El’s signature program honoring the divine gift of animal companionship—the much-anticipated “Blessing of the Animals.”

With a plethora of adorable, well-behaved dogs, “Blessing of the Animals” was as wonderful as ever! Animals and humans alike enjoyed water and treats (dog biscuits pets, and animal crack-ers—of course—for people) and social-izing together before listening to Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and Associ-ate Rabbi Michael Shefrin’s gave brief talks about animals in Jewish tradition. Temple Emanu-El leader and retired veterinarian Dr. Hal Alterman also of-fered free animal health consultations

and handed out certificates proclaiming animals to be cute and special. Each pet also received an individual blessing from our rabbis and had a family pet portrait taken by Alice Cotman. Some pets even dressed up using adorable costume pieces provided by Kim Shein-tal.

“While ‘Blessing of the Animals’ is

a cute and fun event, it is also a really nice reminder to give thanks to God for our pets and to remember our connec-tion with and responsibility to all living creatures,” event co-chair Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman said. “We were thrilled to see so many people and pets coming together for this special afternoon.”

Temple Emanu-El Confirms 13 Wonderful StudentsThe hearts of Temple Emanu-El members were as full as the bimah as thirteen won-derful students participated in a Shabbat service of Confirmation on Friday evening, May 18.

Greeted by Vice-President of Education Wendy Wicks and accompanied by Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and Associate Rabbi Michael Shefrin, the beaming Confir-mands filed into the sanctuary as con-gregants stood in welcome. Each student participated meaningfully in the service, with Matthew Abolafia, Jacob Baram, Julianna Maggard, Natalie Mount, Rebekah Steinbach, and Cassidy Jones beautifully leading prayers and readings; Emma Katz, Rebecca Kleinberg, and Rebekah Spiegel-man chanting perfectly from the Torah; and Leo Glickman, Brett McDowall, Aiden Pearson, and Cooper Zion inspiring wor-shippers with outstanding sermons. Tayla Rosenthal, another beloved member of the class, was confirmed “remotely,” watching the Confirmation ceremony from Israel, where she was attending a semester-long high school program. Also participating in the service by invitation of the Confir-

mands were Director of Education Sabrina Silverberg, Religious School Assistant Beth Steiner, youth group adviser Alex Zalkin, and beloved teacher Sandy Ainbinder. The moving ceremony concluded with each Confirmand formally affirming their Jewish commitment. The entire class symbolically accepting the Torah. The Confirmands were then presented with shofars and mezuzot as gifts from Temple Emanu-El and Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood and Sisterhood, and in turn presented a beautiful havdalah set as a gift to the congregation.

The wonderful 2018 Confirmation class of Temple Emanu-El

Temple Emanu-El Confirmation class members—with Rabbi Brenner Glickman, Rabbi Michael Shefrin, and Religious School Assistant Beth Steiner—shared a group hug after the ceremony

“These young adults are full of love for everyone,” said Sandy Ainbinder, who taught many of the Confirmands as kinder-garteners continues to be an active, loving presence in their lives. “They are all amaz-ing. The future of our Jewish community and our world community is in very capable hands. I am so proud to know them.”

Temple Emanu-El’s Confirmation class will begin again this fall for post-B’nai Mitzvah students. The classes are taught by Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and are a highlight of our temple teens’ Jewish expe-rience. For more information or to enroll your teenager, please call 378-5567.

Membership Committee Hosts a Pot Luck Dinner

Gail Leavitt (left) set up the room with the help of Joanne Maguire and Wyatt Daniel, age seven.

Eighty-four people of all ages enjoyed a delicious variety of food at the annual Pot Luck Dinner fol-lowing Shabbat services on June 29. Thank you to the Member-ship Committee for coordinating the dinner and especially to Gail Leavitt for chairing the event. Wy-att Daniel enjoyed setting up the room especially because chocolate candy was part of the set up. Once before Friday Shabbat services, Wyatt wanted to buy chocolate gelt from the Temple Gift Shop, but it was several months after Chanukah. The volunteer in the gift shop did not know where the

gelt was kept. Wyatt knew exactly where the gelt was stored in the off season and eagerly pointed to the drawer where the candy was kept! Wyatt loves his chocolate. The tables at the Pot Luck Dinner were filled with chicken dishes, deli sandwiches, meat balls, hot vegetables, salads, humus, garlic bread, cookies, brownies, cake, fresh fruit, beer, lemonade, cof-fee, tea, and lots of chocolate candy. The room was filled with sweet people who enjoyed being together.

Barbara Peltz, Donna Jablo, David Arnold, Destiny Elam, Karen Androphy, and Doug Pewterbaugh were happy to see such an array of desserts.

Temple Emanu-El Installs 2018-19 Officers and BoardOn Friday, June 1, Temple Emanu-El held a beautiful ceremony and festive Shabbat dinner to celebrate the installation of our 2018-2019 officers and trustees.

Although it was difficult to say fare-well to the capable, dedicated officers and trustees who have so ably guided Temple Emanu-El over these past years, we are also thrilled with the new board members who are sure to uphold and continue their legacy of excellence, devotion, kindness, and integrity. Installed by Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and Associate Rabbi Michael Shefrin as Temple Emanu-El President was Ken Marsh; serving as offi-cers are Dr. Hal Alterman (vice-president), Gloria Weed (treasurer), Fae Beloff (fi-nancial secretary), Ethel Gross (recording secretary), and Toby Halpern (immediate past president).

New trustees Barry Gerber, Sarah

Link, and Anne Virag were also formally installed, joining returning trustees Alice Cotman, Barbara Peltz, Betty Perlmutter, Mark Sharff, and Harry Yaverbaum.

A number of board members—Vice-Presidents Larry Barnet, Liz Klaber, and Wendy Wicks; Treasurer Neal Vorch-heimer; Recording Secretary Dr. Gary Janko, and trustees Ellen Klein, Dr. Mi-chelle Mallitz, Michelle Pearson, and Doug Popp—left the Temple Emanu-El board after terms of distinguished, much-appre-ciated service. The June 1 Shabbat service

and dinner offered an important opportu-nity to recognize their achievements and to thank them for their devotion to our Temple family.

In addition to recognizing the officers and trustees, Temple Emanu-El members enjoyed a delicious Shabbat dinner pre-pared by Events Manager Fatima Soriano in Benderson Family Hall. It was a very special night of celebration and thanksgiv-ing. May our sacred community continue to go from strength to strength.

Temple Emanu-El’s outgoing officers and board members Doug Popp, Michelle Pearson, Liz Klaber, Toby Halpern, Wendy Wicks, and Larry Barnet were recognized and thanked for their outstanding service to the Temple Emanu-El family

Temple Emanu-El’s 2018-19 officers and trustees joined Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and Associate Rabbi Michael Shefrin in giving a thumbs-up to the year ahead!

FYI

Susan Schwaid Early Learning CenterOur summer camp was designed around weekly units (Oceans, Circus, Camping, The Places We Go, Bugs, and Little Chef) which are of great interest to preschool-aged students. In the classroom the teachers read stories about these themes. During Ocean Week we discussed creatures that live in the sea. During Circus Week the children created clown faces, elephants and cotton candy. The Places We Go—African Neck-laces, Chinese Drums and American Flags. During Camping Week we created tents and binoculars, drew a map and went on a bear hunt. And for Bug Week we made bug headbands, lady bugs. During Chef Week—we created Chef Hats, a Cupcake factory, and participated in various cooking projects throughout the week such as edible cookie dough. Science Instruc-tor from Sarasota Middle School—Jason Sharrock

Science concepts related to the weekly themes were presented, and the students participated in hands-on science experiments to introduce and reinforce these concepts. Most impor-tantly, the students were exposed to this material in a fun way to create a lifelong interest in science.

During Ocean Week, the children discovered the difference between salt (ocean) and fresh water by making their own salt water. They discovered that certain items (in this case an egg) float better in salt water than fresh. In addition, they discovered that wind is a cause of ocean waves by blowing on water with straws and made a simu-lated ocean in a bottle. For Circus Week, we discussed engineering and made catapults that launched marsh-mallows through our simulated ring

of fire. They also were able to make their own creations with toothpicks and marshmallows and experiment with static electricity “clown style” us-ing balloons. They were challenged to make circus-style music while learn-ing about sound waves using tuning forks and glasses filled with varying amounts of water. During Camping Week, the students used flashlights to learn about light and reflection. Throughout the Places We Go Week, we made paper airplanes as a way to travel to an erupting simulated volca-no (each child made their own mini-volcano) and to a super cold destina-tion—a simulated Antarctica—where we experimented with dry ice. Bugs Week brought with it a lesson about camouflage as the students searched for paper butterflies blending in with their environment, as well as looking at small things under a digital micro-

scope and magnifying glasses. Finally, during Little Chefs Week the students focused on following scientific proce-dures (recipes) to create cloud dough, slime, and homemade kinetic sand. It was an exciting six weeks, and it is my hope that the children had fun and learned while doing it.

Once a week we invited Ms. Heather, a certified youth group fitness instructor from Stretch and Grow. She emphasized the basics of exercise, warm-up, endurance, resistance, stretching and continuous age-appropriate movement, along with good nutrition.

Fridays were extra special during the summer, with water days, pizza, and ice cream.

Endowment FundA friend of mine asked, “Can someone with limited savings PLEDGE to the endowment?” YES!!

As my friend found out, anyone who wishes to help the temple can do so without major change to their estate. Your endowment pledge is not distrib-uted until your passing. You will not no-tice any change in your daily bank ac-count. So you will not have any change in your living status. You do not need a lawyer to handle your request. There are many ways to make your impact. For example, local attorney James Es-senson, a temple member, has already graciously provided help to many at no charge. Consider your impact as we aim to sustain the heritage that your dad and mother, your grandad and all those who came before us loved!

LibraryWelcome, Welcome to the TEE Library. I am Rosalind Lieberman, Temple Emanu-El’s new Librarian, ready and willing to help you use our valuable col-lection of Judaic books, records, DVDs, CDs, and Internet service. We are a real Media Center.

Since this is the Year of Hospitality in Temple Emanu-El, we will focus on one of our new books. “AiSHeL Stories of Contemporary Jewish Hospitality,” by Dr. Meir Wikler. It is a collection of fourteen true stories of people who in-vited guests into their home. The author tells about the extraordinary experi-ences that happened to the hosts.

What symbolizes hospitality more than food? We have many cookbooks to

help create a bountiful table for the New Year and all year through. Come into the library and check one out.

Please come into the library and sign up for a library card. The process is simple. Just complete the form in the basket on the front bookshelf. We will register you and give you a library card. Already, Temple Emanu-El has 57 Library Patrons.

If you have any suggestions for books on Jewish topics that we don’t already have, please let us know.

Looking forward to greeting and helping you in the TEE Library.

Mitzvah Backpack ProgramThis truly has been a blessed and extraordinary year for the Mitzvah Backpack Program!

It began with an expansion of adding valued helpers from St. Mary Academy. St. Mary Academy is a school for children with special learning needs that shares the cam-pus with St. Martha Catholic School across the street from the temple. Fondly referred to as Hands Across McIntosh, this is not only an inter-faith endeavor, it is an opportunity for children from St. Mary Academy and our own religious school to help pack weekend food for impoverished children at Lakeview Elementary and St. Mary Academy.

Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at St. Mary Academy volunteer bi-monthly throughout the school year. Their invaluable help sorting and set-ting up items, makes the second half of the endeavor run seamlessly. Our religious school children, parents and temple members pack food to feed the children for two consecutive week-ends. In addition, St. Mary Academy has agreed to continue this support in the upcoming school year.

Additionally, the program re-ceived a $21,000 grant from the Charles & Margery Barancik Founda-tion. This three-year grant provides $7000/year, allowing us to improve the quality and variety of nourishing foods with a focus on providing fresh produce.

Other supporting groups in-clude The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program, Detwiler’s Farm Market, Panera Bread and Earth Origins.

A heartfelt thanks to both Sherri Eisenberg and Rachael Witherspoon

for supervising each phase of the pro-cess. Also, thanks to the many volun-teers who pick up and deliver dona-tions to the temple and help getting the food packed and ready for pickup to Lakeview Elementary. All of this could not be accomplished without the help of Susan Cohen, Lila Feld-man, Marlies Gluck, Ethel and Dick Gross, Gail Leavitt, Michael Richker, Debbie Solomon, Lynda Wetherson, and Peter Wells.

Due to health issues, I will be limiting my activities with the Mitz-vah Backpack Program. Beginning in September, Lynne Pewterbaugh and Diane Arch will be co-chairs of the program. Lynne, Diane and I are

looking forward to feeding and nour-ishing the children of our Sarasota community.

Volunteers are needed every oth-er Wednesday. If you are interested in helping with pick-up and delivery of food, supervising sorting and/or packing bags for delivery to the school, contact Lynne Pewterbaugh at [email protected].

Temple Emanu-El Religious School Prepares for Another YearAs summer comes to an end, Temple Emanu-El Religious School (TEERS)’s faculty, parents, and students are anticipating another wonderful year of learning and living Jewishly—with some exciting additions and enhancements!

“In 5779, we are committed to bringing TEERS to new levels of excel-lence!” stated Director of Education Sabrina Silverberg, M.A.R.E. “We have assembled a team of enthusiastic and highly-credentialed educators to bring innovative approaches to Jew-ish learning. We will strive to engage our students and families with learning that is deeply rooted in meaning and relevance and enrich their lives with the joy of community and the wisdom of Judaism.”

TEERS will continue to engage in the hands-on, experiential learning for which it is famous, including the signa-ture chugim program featuring Jewish cooking, gardening, crafts, and film, Israeli dance, conversational Hebrew, and a range of educational, social, spiri-tual, and community service opportuni-

ties for TEERS families. TEERS is also proud to welcome back popular and be-loved faculty, including Rabbi Michael Shefrin—who will work this year with all grades on various topics—and Rabbi Brenner Glickman—who serves as the lead instructor in Confirmation.

The excitement is building as the

first day of TEERS approaches on Sun-day morning, September 16. We can’t wait to see you there!

room to superserve—to provide what-ever a classroom of students needed for success throughout their school experi-ence. Realizing that the scope of doing more had to be manageable, Larry drew upon the parable of the woman walking along a beach littered with thousands of starfish who, upon observing a boy throwing the starfish back into the sea one by one, asked the boy what he was doing. When the boy answered that he was saving the starfish, the woman asked how, given the thousands of star-fish, he as one boy could make a differ-ence. As the boy gently tossed a starfish into the water, he replied, “I made a difference for that one.” From this, four congregants (Wendy Barnet, Larry Barnet, Tanice Knopp, and Ken Marsh) came together as a steering committee to design the goal and scope of an initia-tive based on research data findings about the needs of children from low-income families entering Kindergarten.

Therefore, the TEE Starfish Initia-tive was designed to superserve a local, public-school Kindergarten classroom with a high incidence of students from poverty through:• closing the vocabulary gap, which often widens the achievement gap, between these at-risk students and their peers from other socioeconomic groups;• inspiring a love of reading and in-creasing reading readiness skills;• supporting the integration of STEAM learning activities; and • increasing the students’ life skills, self-esteem, and confidence through mentoring.

The Steering Committee ap-proached Wilkinson Elementary School principal, Susan Nations, asking that she identify one Kindergarten teacher who would welcome this initiative. We asked that she only move forward if the other four teachers on the team would support the implementation of this pilot initiative in only one of the classrooms and not feel resentful. We also had one request—that they approve three pro-posed activities that align with the local community’s Campaign for Grade-Level

Back By Popular Demand: The TEE Starfish InitiativeLast year more than 80 Temple Emanu-El (TEE) congregants and friends gener-ously gave of their time, talents, and re-sources to implement the TEE Starfish Initiative. Because the initiative made a significant difference at the school and so many of our volunteers wanted to return, we are excited to report that the initiative will continue into the 2018-19 school year.

This initiative was born from a question, an example, and a parable. The question came from TEE congre-gant, Larry Barnet, at the time serving as a mentor and tutor in a local school district, who asked Tanice Knopp how he could do more. He had read about a philanthropist who had adopted a class-

Reading and address data about the vocabulary gap and lack of experience with books: • Kindergarten Rockin’ Readers—Through this program designed for volunteers by the school district’s Cur-riculum & Instruction reading special-ists, a volunteer reads 1:1 weekly with a student throughout the school year.• Book Buddies Program—This program pairs a volunteer with a stu-dent to gift books to build the student’s home library. Four times throughout the school year, the student send a drawing about something they enjoy to their volunteer who, in turn, sends a book relevant to that drawing along with a note to the student.• Dramatic Story-Telling—Through this program Wendy Barnet, in full costume, conducts dramatic story-telling sessions for the Kinder-garten class based on books she selects with the teacher. Elaine and Akiva Pipe gift each book to all of the children to develop their home library.

The rest of the activities would come from the Starfish teacher’s wish list and activities offered by congre-gants. The principal and the teacher agreed.

We then invited the Starfish teacher to create her wish list of materials, activities, volunteer support, and funds

school, TEE Starfish volunteers also helped with the school book fair, the summer reading program, and mate-rials collections for various learning activities.

Knowing the caring, giving, and talents of our congregants, we shouldn’t have been surprised at the response, but we never dreamed we would get the response that we did across a full range of involvement. These activities were methodically implemented and/or expanded with the permission of the principal and in stages throughout the school year to ensure fidelity to the effort and to avoid overwhelming the students, the teacher, and the school.

For the 2018-19 school year, the TEE Starfish Steering Committee (Larry Barnet, Wendy Barnet, Lynn Friedman, Tanice Knopp, and Wendy Rudd) will lead the initiative as it was implemented last year. We will extend activities designed for the Starfish classroom to one or more of the other Kindergarten classrooms if the principal approves and the classroom teacher is interested and if it is appropriate for a specific activ-ity. We have a full measure of resources to do so, and, when doing so does not compromise implementation in the designated classroom.

School begins August 13. We will notify volunteers of activity start dates after the 10-day count when we know the number of Kindergarten students and classrooms. The Rockin’ Reader training sessions for new and return-ing volunteers are scheduled for August 22 or September 27 (see flyer in the lobby). Wendy Rudd will post informa-tion about the Book Buddy program late in August. Larry Barnet is distributing information about how to address the teacher’s wish list. Please contact Dr. Tanice Knopp ([email protected]) to register for the Rockin’ Reader training (if you have not already done so), or to create a learning activity, and for gen-eral information about the initiative.

to promote student achievement—aca-demic as well as social-emotional and other life skills. We asked her to reach for the stars in compiling her list with the understanding that we may not be able to meet all of her requests. On the other side of this partnership equation, in addition to recruiting congregants as reading mentors and as book buddies and asking that they address the wish list items, we asked interested congre-gants to identify their interests, talents, and skills in terms of what they wanted to offer to the students. In response, students benefitted from creative music, art, and science experiences; science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning activi-ties; and learning materials that were either made for the students or new and gently-used donations. STEEMY’s Back and Ready for AdventureOur youth group’s newly elected board worked hard this summer to make sure amazing STEEMY events are planned for this new year. At the Board Retreat, plan-ning for the year began and cool new t-shirts were designed. We even did some unconventional team building at a local Escape Room. This board is off to an amazing start.

The kick-off event was a hit! STEEMY raced through Target finding items for a pirate themed scavenger hunt. After that, Steemy went to PetLand to pet all the puppies. They are just so fluffy! There is nothing better in the Florida heat than fro-yo. Our members were treated to deli-cious frozen yogurt to cool our-selves off. The night ended with a unique parking lot Havdalah service. It was the best welcome back ever.

Upcoming events: September 22, STEEMY will be hitting up Top Golf from 6-10 pm (transpor-tation provided). For a member-ship form, information about up-coming NFTY Kallahs, or for any questions about the best Jewish teen happenings in all of Sarasota, contact Alex Zalkin, our Steemy Advisor, at [email protected].

The STEEMY Board handled the Escape Room at Countdown Sarasota. They escaped with 3 minutes left. Phew!

Jacob, Ben and Mathew eating some fro-yo and cooling off from the Florida summer.
