To make matters even more interesting, another version of this prayer, taken from the Israeli Refo Machzor. was added to the very end of our new Machzor. Temple B'nai Or Bulletin

From Rabbi Rossoff OUR MOTHER, OUR QUEENWHAT'S IN A NAME?

As noted in the High Holy Day materials we sent out this summer, this year we are updating our High Holy Day Machzor, the Gates of Repentance, to the 1996 revised "gender sensitive" edition. This edition is identical to the older GOR which we had been using, page for page, prayer for prayer, except that masculine references to God are changed to gender-neutral appellations.

None of us (methinks) still image God as the old Man with the white beard in the sky, nor do we consciously believe that God is masculine. Still, we have learned that the language we use about each other and the things that are most important indeed shapes our deeper understandings as to what is really real. The language we use shapes the world we see and the society we build. Hence, I believe it better for ourselves and for generations to come not to ascribe "maleness" to the Ultimate Power and Source of Meaning.

The prayer that is changed the most is the one of our hearts' favorites: the Avinu Malkeinu. Many hours of discussion went into the question of what to do with "Our Father, Our King." There were no simple answers. Avinu Malkeinu addresses God in the dual role of Parent who loves us and accepts us as we are and of Ruler, who commands us to be more and judges us as to our effort. But to translate it as," Parent, Our Ruler," provided neither the majestic power nor the poetic ring of "Our Father, Our King."

The solution? In our new revised GOR, the phrase Avinu Malkeinu is not translated at all. but simply transliterated. Thus, even in translation, we will address God as "Avinu Malkeinu," with each of us attaching to those phrases the images and metaphors which speak to us most directly of our loving and directing God.

To make matters even more interesting, another version of this prayer, taken from the Israeli Reform Machzor. was added to the very end of our new Machzor. In this version, "Avinu Malkeinu" is replaced with other labels for God: "Shechina, M'kor Chayaynu' ("God's Presence, Source of our lives"). It is then translated in various ways, "Loving Presence, Caring Presence, Mothering Presence [not so gender neutral. if you ask me], Holy Presence," and a few others. While this is not a text I believe we will be using (for one thing, it fits none of our favorite melodies), it does give us more avenues through which to experience the One who is beyond all language.

From the Rabbi continued from page J

No matter how old we are, no matter how many times we have observed Rosh Hashanah and YtJln Kippur; there is aLways something new to discover about Judaism, about our world, about God, and about ourselves.

But then again, is that not what this season is all about?

Best wishes from home to home for a joyous, healthy and growthfull New Year!

Rabbi Don Rossoff

High Holy Day News Last year, in order to respond to our growing Temple membership, we initiated two services on Yom Kippur. It seemed to alleviate crowding. W¢ find that we have an "overflow" crowd on Rosh Hashanah. To accommodate all who wish to attend Rosh Hashanah Services, we will also have two Morning Seices, the earlier beginning <it Q:OO a.m. and the later at 12 Noon. Both services will be identicat. In c.litjog we will still hold two Yom Kippur Services.

L'Shana Tovah! As September begins, escorting the Summer out and ushering the Jewish New Year in, we anticipate the familiar High Holy Days' feast of the senses. We see family and friends once again, perhaps after a period of separation due to geographical distance, emotional distance or just a lack of time. We cap this reunion with a toucha handshake, an embrace, perhaps a kiss. We smell the wonderful aromas and devour the mouth watering delicacies of the holiday meals-the savory brisket and potato kugel, the sweet honey cake and plum torte, to mention a few.

But perhaps the most compelling stimulus of this New Year period is that of sound. We hear the congregation's collective prayers and our own silent prayers-prayers filled with gratitude, inspiration, hope, repentance. The beautiful strains of the violin, cello, flute and harp enchant us. And, of course, as at no other time of the year, the blasts of the shofar awaken us and beseech us to take stock of our lives. So begins our New Year 5760.

But at Temple B' nai Or compelling sounds do not stop with the passing of the High Holy Days. There is Joyful noise to be heard all year long. Edifying noise will result from the various Adult Education programs, including Judaism on One Foot, Adult Hebrew classes, the Rae Pall Family Education Series and the Scholar in Residence Weekend. Planning and problem-solving noise will come forth from committee meetings, from Facilities to Fund Raising, from Men's Club to Membership and from Social Action to Sisterhood (aka Women of Reform Judaism). Surely there will be sounds of laughter and camaraderie emanating from the numerous Temple social activities, not to mention Junior and Senior Youth Group events. And Rabbi Rossoff's 10th Anniversay Weekend is expected to produce unlimited singing and simcha-raising.

These are the sounds of a flourishing community-the Temple B'nai Or Community. As the music and joyful noise beckon, let yourself be drawn in. Add your voice to the ensemble!

To you, your loved ones and your friends, may 5760 be a sweet new year filled with good health, happiness and peace.

High Holy Day Food Drive Our Food Drive will begin during Rosh Hashanah and end at the Yom Kippur morning services.

Our congregants donate more than 1,000 pounds of food to local agencies. All nonperishable food and paper goods are welcome. Should you like your donation to

Linda Haan

go to the Oheb Shalom Kosher Food Pantry, only food labeled with (K), (U), or (P) will be accepted. They will also accept diapers, toilet paper and towels as well as other paper items. Please label your grocery bag with a large K.

You will receive a grocery bag after Rosh Hashanah Services. We ask that you return the bag filled with non-perishable food and paper goods prior to the 9:00 a.m., or Noon Service, on Yom Kippur morning, September 20th.

From the Desk of the Administrator As summertime winds down, we are yet preparing for the New Year at Temple B'nai Or. Preparing for the New Year entails many different areas. From preparing the classrooms to mailing out High Holy Day information and answering ticket requests, the office and custodial staff are busy at work trying to make that first day back, or that first service, appear as if no one was ever away!

In addition to our office staff preparing for the New Year, our committees are beginning their work. Chairpeople have been selected for the coming year and they are interested in getting committees formed quickly. Each committee needs new

members to volunteer, to partICIpate, exchange ideas and suggestions. Our committees need your help. Whichever committee you choose, needs your input.

As you prepare for your return to Temple B' nai Or, think about which committee you would like to serve on for the 1999/2000 year. Then I'd love to hear which committee you're interested In joining-either email me at:

or give me a call. Your participation really does make a difference!

Saturday evening September 4, 1999 7:00 p.m. On Saturday evening September 4th

at 7:()() p.m., plan to join us under the stars for dinner and a S'lichot Service. S'lichot traditionally marks the start of spiritual preparation for the High Holy Days. It is a time when we look within ourselves and realize the need for more of a spiritual connection and growth. Come and reflect under the September sky and partake in one of the most personal and beautiful services of the year.

Welcoming the Shabbat Mark your calendar for Friday, October 15th and plan to join us for a Kabbalat Shabbat Service beginning at 6:()() p.m. T he service is only only 30 minutes in length, created to give thanks for the week, and look forward to the coming week. Traditional prayers and readings have been carefully selected from various sources that stress inner renewal, healing and comfort. Our Rabbi and various members of our congregation will lead us in worship. Cantor Benson will lead us in song and music.

After our Kabbalat Service, we will be serving a dairy dinner at 6:30 p.m. which will be followed by our Shabbat service at 8:00 p.m.

College Connection

To provide a link between our college students and the Temple, the College Connection was created. Throughout the year, students receive the Temple Bulletin, holiday packages, and information on Jewish issues. Please be sure to send the Temple Office your children's college address, phone, and e-mail address.

Interfaith Hospitality Network News Wann thanks are extended to Dian and Jeffrey Weisman for donating new room dividers for our Housing the Homeless project. Dividers are used whenever the Temple hosts the homeless, and those we had been using really needed to be replaced. W hen the Weismans heard our pleas for new dividers, they responded immediately.

We can't thank them enough for their generosity on all fronts, including the time and effort they spent on this project.

Thanks, Dian and Jeffrey, from all of us.

Temple B'naf Or Religious School We are enthusiastically ready for the 1999-2000 Religious School year. New staff members join our faculty, together with returning teachers, eager and prepared to meet the great challenges of Jewish education at the cusp of the new millenium. Many new programs await our children who are ready to discover the joy and beauty of our rich and deep heritage.

It seems that the headlines from Columbine High School in Colorado and other areas of the nation are now in the recesses of our memory banks. We should not forget the impact that these incidents had on all of us, especially the students. What did we learn from the events that riveted us for weeks and months a short time ago?

There are many children that feel deeply hurt for a multitude of reasons. Some choose isolation from others due to feelings of guilt, shame and/or anger. They face life with fears, apprehensions and preconceptions that can quickly lead to depression and damaging behavior.

What is the role of the Religious School in acknowledging that these stirrings exist in some of our students (we reflect the general school population) and in diminishing the hardships and hurt of these same children.

Children need connection to others. They thrive when they receive it and suffer when they don't. In our culture of dislocation and loneliness, lack of connection is a major source of pain. It is important for our school to be compassionate, show interest, safely look at the issues in our children's lives and improve the relationships that students need to have with one another.

And what about building a connection with God? Many children sense God is "within" their bodies and mind. A good relationship to God can be comforting and even inspiring. How they feel toward God may include anger, but our faith insists that religion is more than rules and punishment. For some, "spirituality" brings comfort. Others want their lives to be more consistent, meaningful and hopefully, joyful.

Our school will emphasize working on improving connections for and with the students. We hope to be influential in playing a vital part of developing a safe, dependable, and caring relationship for and with the students. We are more than books, programs, and homework. We are about belief and commitment to a healthy Jewish way of life. May 5760 be a year filled with happiness and fulfillment.

Shana Tovah.

Nursery School What an exciting year we have ahead of us. People are getting so worked up about the new millennium. It's an exciting time to be alive-the tum of the century is just around the comer. It can be looked at as the end of an era. Hopefully it will be a new beginning in many ways. But one fellow described it as just a date on a calendar and another New Year's Eve Party-and probably a quiet one at home watching TV from what I hear from friends. Well, the writers will write and the businesses will boom and the entertainers will entertain. There's no doubt the media will bombard us with Y 2Kproblems and pleasures.

It is time to take stock, now, before the Jewish New Year. This Rosh Hashanah gives us a unique opportunity to reflect and to project even before the tum of the century. I often think that we have come so far and yet a lot of our "progress" has quantity, not quality. Our senses and sensibilities have been bombarded by the media, with information, visual images,

HEBREW READING MARATHON

violence, amoral behavior and mediocrity. It is so easy today to be overwhelmed and stressed. It is easier to get caught in the web than to maintain our ideals at all times. What we, as individuals, do about it will make a difference who we are and what our families will become in the coming years. It's time to assess our values in light of the abundance of noise and activity and demands of our progress. And it's time to encourage our friends and families to, yes, enjoy our abundance and good fortune. But, more importantly, it's a time to make or renew our commitment to raising Jewish families with love and warmth and purpose. We'll take the firm foundation of Judaism with us and we'll teach it to our children, when we walk by, when we lie down and when we rise up. And if we really pause to reflect and to project, we'll know that the basic values, if we abide by them, will take us forward with joy and integrity.

USE $CRIP!

Just a reminder! When you use $CRIP you are supporting Temple's many programs and services. For each $1 of food purchased with $CRIP, the Temple is given $.05. If a family spends $400 per month on food, paper goods, wine, etc., and purchases it with $CRIP, the Temple would receive $20. Spending at that level each month, over a year 's time, would generate $240 per family. If a large portion of our congregation participated, the Temple could easily raise more than $40,000 annually. $CRIP is available for shopping at Kings, Foodtown, ShopRite, AND Edwards Super Food Stores.

Welcome to the Fatherhood Project. A place where men of a new generation can learn what they need to know about parenting, and find emotional support from their peers. Open to fathers with children of all ages; join us to enjoy camaraderie, reassurance and brotherhood in a Jewish context.

Our first topic is: Balancing Work, Family and Community. We'll also provide a general introduction to the Fatherhood Project, including selecting topics for future meetings. Rich Cohen is our Fatherhood Project Chairman, and he can be reached at 973-895-9242.

Monday Night Football and Boar d Meeting

September 27

Our first Board meeting (and second event of the year) is scheduled for Monday night September 27th, as we once again have our Monday Night Football get-together at 8:30 p.m. We'll have plenty of munchies to accompany a great night of schmoozing and football watching. Contact Steve Spiegel for directions and to RSVP. The Board meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the same location.

September 16 Hope to see you at an event soon! Imagine walking through the Temple on September 16 and finding a dozen men in a room filled with conversation and Rich Herbert

Sisterhood of Temple B'nai Or L'Shana Tova to all! It's hard to believe that the summer is over and the New Year is upon us. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer.

The WRJ/Sisterhood Board has been very busy all summer planning very exciting activities for the entire congregation. I hope we will see some new faces at our Sisterhood events this year. It is looking to be a very fulfilling year!

September is a very busy month for Sisterhood. Please mark your calendar with the upcoming events. If you can lend a helping hand, we would greatly appreciate it.

Jeri Sharpe President

Our RENAISSANCE GROUP provides an oasis for those having leisure time to cultivate new friendships and renew old ones. We promote educational, cultural, and entertaining programs that are of interest to all participants.

Our new season will start with our usual brunch on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. on October 3rd, in the Temple Social Hall. Once again Dr. Robert Roth - the psychologist who graduated from Juilliard - and his lovely piano renditions of Jewish composers and Jewish music will entertain us.

The cost is $5.00 per person. Please, please remember to make your reservations with Dick Raffman, 908-470-9122, or Shirley Weitz, 973-267-9889, by Wednesday, September 29th, so that we can order the right amount of food!

It is also time to renew our membership; dues are $10.00 per person and can be paid at the meeting.

Sunday, November 14th, we will meet for brunch away from the Temple; "where" is still up in the air. If you have any ideas where you might like to go, call Dick Raffman at 908-470-9122, with your suggestions.

So remember to join us at our first meeting of the new year on October 3rd. See you then!

We wish you all a pleasant and healthy New Year!

Plan ..... , Ahead 1 Ten years ago Rabbi Rossoff joined Temple B'nai Or. His presence has become a vital force in the life of TBO. As our spiritual leader he has guided us through the joyful and sorrowful times. His commitment to the Jewish family, to Israel, and to the Jewish community has profoundly influenced each of us and helped to continue to shape the mission of our synagogue.

Join us in celebration, Friday, June 16th and Saturday, June 17ttl as we honor Rabbi Rossoff. It will be our way to demonstrate the love and respect we have for such a wonderful human being whose dedication and spiritual leadership will continue to make a difference in each of our lives and the world in which we live.

Thanks and Kudos for Interfaith Hospitality Network Volunteers During the past summer Temple B'nai Or hosted 15 homeless guests for two weeks. The volunteers who helped with this project contributed in various ways and all gave generously of their time and concern for our guests. We want to extend our sincere thanks to:

High Holy Days 5760/ 1999: Leave The Corners of Our Fields

for the Poor and the Stranger

This is thefast I have cfwsen . . . to share your bread with the hungry . . .

[Isaiah 581

Despite an era of unprecedented abundance, millions of American children go to school hungry, unable to concentrate and learn. Millions of elderly people live with hunger each day, uncertain of where their next meal is coming from. And millions of all ages in between struggle under the crushing weight of hunger and poverty.

For the last two years, thousands of modern-day Jews have given life to our Jewish tradition of tzedakah and tikkun olam by supporting "The Corners Of Oar Field," a High Holy Days appeal that seeks funds for MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and food for local charities. Over the last two years, the appeal has raised more than $1 .46 million and almost three million pounds of food. Again this year, MAZON has united with the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements in "The Comers Of Our Field. " And again this year, we ask you to join in this extraordinary act of Jewish pluralism.

As we look inward during these High Holy Days, MAZON asks that you reach outward to those in need. Please give 110 MAZON what you would have spent to feed yourself and your family on Yom Kippur. Funds raised will support our grantmaking to programs providing food, help and hope to hungry people in our own country, in Israel tnd around the world. And please help feed your hungry neighbors y contributing to your congregation's food drive. \ Together, we can add meaning to our fast. And, together, we can ease the pain of hunger for millions in our country and our world. r - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -L - - - - - - - - - - - - ,

Yes, I/we will leave "the comers of our fields" for the • r "\d the stranger during . the High Holy Days by giving money to MAZON: wisn Response to Hunger

and by bringing food to our c ' ation.
