MISSION STATEMENT

Temple Bnai Israel is a welcoming Jewish community which offers a spiritual, religious, and social home for all Jews. We cherish a belief in one God, the Torah, prayer and the music and beauty of our Jewish culture. We are commanded and committed to passing these blessings on to all future generations. We observe and celebrate Jewish traditions and laws, while remaining open to change which meets the needs of our time, and which will stand the test of time. We intend to be a force for good and comfort as individuals and as a whole. We seek to offer justice, tolerance, and charity within the Temple Bnai Israel community, the larger Jewish community, and the non-Jewish worlds within which we live. Our synagogue recognizes the equality of all Jews. Jewish men and women, including those Jews in interfaith marriages, are entitled to participate equally in all religious rites, and all secular and religious leadership positions. Our congregation also reaches out to all who welcome Judaism into their lives.

We believe in the ancient teaching: “to do justly, love mercy, and walk

humbly with thy God.”

Thank you!

I end this secular year with an extraordinary sense of gratitude for this wonderful Congregation, our leadership, community, staff – and Rav Jeremy. Being part of your lives, and the life of our Congregation, is a real blessing that lifts, teaches, enriches, and lightens life.

I also want to take time to thank those who help care for our community – and put in a pitch for new members for the Caring Committee. Many hands make lighter work, and we need more hands. Please join this incredible group if you can, by contacting Fran Jaffe at [email protected] or 860-228-2390.

Thanks also to those who help repair our world – near and far. To those who enhance our spiritual practices, our library, our cultural life, our school, and our well-being.

A special shout out to the extraordinary 2017 Auction Committee that implemented an incredibly fun and successful event, raising close to $17,000! Mazel Tov, Toda: Nora Stein, Sheila Amdur, Ellie Shane, Ellen Marshall, Jane Moskowitz, and all who helped in so many ways! Jim and I appreciate and thank you all. We wish you and yours a healthy and happy 2018.

Spread the word to family and friends, Jewish or not, and anyone else you think would like to learn about the rich, multi-faceted heritage of

Judaism and all it has to offer.

Or perhaps you would like to take this course to gain a deeper understanding of Judaism. This course is ideal for those who may or may not have been raised in a Jewish home, but are seeking a better understanding of the basic Jewish spiritual and ethical practices, philosophical understandings, and cultural activities. We will also learn about the Jewish activist tradition of tikkun olam (repairing the world). We welcome individuals who may not be currently engaged in congregational life, and who may not be Jewish, but are curious about what Judaism has to offer.

THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU…

if you are a curious person who would like a better understanding of the rich, multi-faceted heritage of

Judaism.

if you want to become more involved in repairing the world (tikkun olam) or learning about the ethical and

philosophical underpinnings of Judaism.

also, if you are not currently engaged in congregational life, but want to understand the ancient, yet ever

contemporary, Judaic traditions.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd, 6:15 p.m.

Our Temple has had a Hevra Kaddisha – a Sacred Society for burial of the dead - for about a year and a half. With support from Glenn Blumenstein, this group of Temple members has learned the traditions of preparing our beloved dead for burial in the Jewish way that honors their holiness as people and the holiness of their bodies. The group has worked with Rav Jeremy to adapt the tradition to our congregation’s Jewish way, and have helped many families honor their loved ones. It’s a tradition to honor the members of the Hevra Kaddisha each year with a banquet on the 7th of Adar (the traditional date of Moses’ yahrzeit, which this year is February 22nd).

Please save the date for this important event. Watch for more details in the February edition of The Bulletin.

Thank you to Sheila and the assortment of additional fill in volunteers for December. Our leader for January is Carol (she needs a partner) and we have no one for February. March is covered. You should have received a letter from the Caring Committee co chairs requesting additional volunteers. We hope you will consider stepping in when you can to help our fellow congregants when they’re in need. It’s a pretty simple commitment since we communicate through email – no meetings! Call our monthly leaders, Rav Jeremy or the committee co-chairs, Fran Jaffe or Ellie Shane, if you or anyone you know needs some assistance.

Here’s hoping for a “kind” winter! Happy New Year!

The Library Committee is extremely grateful to Glenn Blumenstein for his recent donation of a new computer, complete with installation and programming, for our use.

This updated technology will allow us to better manage the library. It will greatly improve how quickly we can process new book acquisitions,

making them shelf-ready and available for checkout much sooner!

The library has received many newly purchased books as well as several book donations. Thank you so much for your generosity! Please come to the library to read and check out some of our new books.

Refugee by Alan Gratz is a new young adult novel illustrating the journeys of three adolescent refugees and their families in 1930s Nazi Germany, Cuba in 1994, and Syria in 2015. All the children must deal with terrible danger, but through hope, courage, and survival, each family seeks the goal of safe escape to new homes. Although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by time and location, their stories have surprising connections and similar themes. This story is action-packed and suitable for both young adults and adults.

Another new acquisition, Ketzel, the Cat Who Composed by Leslea Newman, is perfect for children ages 5-8. A composer living in a busy, noisy neighborhood finds a tiny kitten and takes her home. The kitten and composer make beautiful music together in unexpected ways. This is a sweet illustration of sincere friendship based on a true story. Ketzel is a 2016 Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Award Winner.

Your library continues to be open on Wednesday evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., as well as on the Sundays when Jewish Explorations is in session. If you can help by staffing the library on those Sundays, that would be wonderful. We will train you. As a reminder, our two annex library carts (one in the upstairs lobby and one in the downstairs lobby) allow you to check out books at any time, with complete checkout instructions on the carts.

Please remember to return your books within three weeks so that others will be able to enjoy them.

TEMPLE BNAI ISRAEL’S SNOW AND SERVICE POLICY

Dear Friends, it’s “that” time of year again, so here is a reminder of our policy about snow and services! Services are normally not cancelled, but sometimes are moved to the home of Rav Jeremy and Merle; when they are, there will be a message regarding that on the Temple’s voicemail at least an hour prior to service time. This allows for those who feel it is safe to travel (including those who have signed up for Jewry Duty that day) to be able to attend services. If you head over to the synagogue for services on a stormy day that you felt was O.K. for travel, and no one is there, head over to the home of Rav Jeremy and Merle.

IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS IN OUR NOVEMBER EDITION

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING OUR STREET ADDRESS

Dear Friends, throughout the history of our Temple and its associated parsonage house, the Temple’s physical address has been known as 345 Jackson Street, which is, in fact, the address for the parsonage only! The official address of record for the Temple is 383 Jackson Street. While it never posed too much of a problem from a package or mail delivery perspective (we usually had a Rabbi or tenants living in the parsonage who made sure mail was re-directed to the Temple), it is important as we move ahead to use the CORRECT address for each building. To that end, we will begin using 383 everywhere (though it may take longer to change it in some venues than others), and installing 383 on the Temple building. You may see some ‘cross-over’ occurring as we work to correct all records, but our hope is that, in the very near future, 383 will be the only street number associated with the Temple.

PLEASE NOTE:

Our street address SHOULD NOT be written on items you mail to us.

Please use only our P.O. Box number 61, Willimantic, CT 06226.

Please update your records accordingly. Thank you!

AND SO, TO RECAP

383 Jackson Street is the TEMPLE’s street address.

345 Jackson Street is the PARSONAGE street address.

P.O. Box 61, is the address to which ALL correspondence should be sent. WRITE ONLY the P.O. Box number on the envelope. Do not include the street address or there is a good chance your piece-o-mail will be lost in the post office abyss.

Hashivenu is a podcast about Jewish teachings and practice around resilience. Cultivating resilience in challenging times, both individually and collectively,

is an essential path to personal renewal.

Rabbi Deborah Waxman Ph.D.: “Hashivenu means “return us.” The “us” is the Jewish people, asking to be renewed. Seeking renewal, cultivating resilience — these are central concerns in Jewish thought and Jewish practice. Focusing on resilience is one way to think about how the Jewish people and the Jewish civilization we’ve created have survived for thousands of years. Again and again throughout history, Jews have experienced catastrophe — I’m talking about living through shattering challenges that destroyed our communities, that made us rethink our relationship to God, our relationship to other Jews, our relationship to other peoples and the world around us. And, again and again, we have transcended these catastrophes, we have breathed new life into the Jewish people and the Jewish civilization, we have found pathways to repair. From trauma, we have had to heal. We have done so by finding ways to cultivate resilience, both individually and collectively.”
