Rabbi’s Reflections ~~ Rabbi Devora Buchen

The Shofar

It has been 12 years since hurricane Charley and now right before the High Holy Days we have weathered hurricane Irma. We have come through this time feeling a sense of gratitude and a new awareness of the bond of caring that has come forth from our synagogue family. We offer up many prayers for the High Holy Days. We pray for forgiveness, health and vigor, security, good sustenance, help for Israel, and world peace. With added fervor we pray for a long life. “Rabin ha Ilan zohrainu l’hayim arubim.” Lord of the universe, remember us for a long life. We add life to our years and years to her life, if our life brings out the best in others. The aftermath of the storm has indeed brought out the best in all of us—I am so very proud of our family. Now during the 10 days of the holiday, I ask you to reflect if you have made your past fruitful, and your present a starting point for future growth, if you are striving upward even through pain and struggles, if every year you have Keener perceptions, better judgement, deeper loyalties, if you feel that you are growing—then—you are alive, and the greatness of life is yours and you are blessed. Make the new year a happier one for those around us. It will be a happier year for all of us.

Shana Tova Tikatevu. May you have a blessed healthy new year.

As the New Year approaches, the first High Holy Days of my first year of service as your President, I think about the balance sheet of my life beyond ordinary routines. We must give thanks to G-d that we can celebrate the High Holy Days with our families, friends and extended families in our beautiful synagogue.  Rosh Hashanah, literally “Head of the Year,” is symbolic to Jews around the world and evokes a myriad of emotions and memories for each of us. It is both significant and special to have a dedicated period giving all Jews the opportunity to take stock and really evaluate oneself then (hopefully) make a conscious decision to improve through  actions.    It is at this juncture of the upcoming high holidays that we need to pause and give thanks for all the good things we have, our health, happiness and our special temple family. If we imagine The Book of Life and what might be written on our personal page, it could be things we do for others, what we do to others and what we neglect to do that we could have done. It is our responsibility to be the best version of ourselves and I believe that doing something for another person, animal or organization actually helps us, too. The truth is, I am continually a work in progress, but I know that saying something kind to a friend or a stranger, remembering someone for an occasion, offering support, laughing/crying with someone or any number of other seemingly small actions can make a big difference. We all know how it feels to be the recipient of a kind word or a harsh one. Either can affect how we respond to the next person we interact with. When we try to make it a good year for others it comes back to us.This year I humbly ask for your help to ensure that our collective journey is filled with substantive meaning and tikkun olam (acts of kindness to perfect or repair the world). We should  be working vigorously for the collective good in serving the needs of the congregation. We have an outstanding Rabbi, Board of Directors,

Religious School and congregants willing to advance the well-being of the Temple.I and my family wish you all L'shana Tovah Tikatevu – May all your names be inscribed and sealed for a joyous and healthy New Year.

I would like t o thank my Temple for the prayers, cards, notes, phone calls and visits during my hospitalizations and rehabs. I am coming along fine and hope to see you soon. Also, a big thank you to our rabbi for her prayers, visits and calls.

Joe Studna

Every day is a new beginning, a new opportunity to make choices, to make changes. There’s something special and very powerful about the beginning of a new year. It’s more than just making day to day choices and changes, it is a process that involves many steps including reviewing the activities of the past year and reassessing the success or failure of the choices/changes that were made. The question that any individual or organization that is looking ahead at the big picture, the direction for the new year, needs to address is “What exactly are my goals for myself/ my organization for the new year and how do I focus my attention and my energy to facilitate reaching these goals?” In terms of Sisterhood, I have given these questions a lot of thought lately and have come up with one major goal that I as your president would like to see happen in this new year. I would like to increase and strengthen membership in our Sisterhood organization. Sisterhood is more than just a fundraising arm of our Temple - a very important aspect but just one of several. Sisterhood is also about FUN raising, friendship building and bonding with one another. To reach this goal, we will begin having bimonthly meetings, preferably on the same day as the brotherhood meetings. On the alternate months, we’ll have a 15 minute catch up session before Rosh Chodesh. Increased visibility hopefully will translate into increased availability. We welcome new members with new ideas and look forward to renewed energy and a renewed Sisterhood. Georgette

La Shana Tova Temple Family. I hope you are all aware of the High Holidays rapidly approaching. We have Selichot Sept. 16th, Erev Rosh Hashanah Sept. 20, Rosh Hashanah the 21st. Erev Yom Kippur

Sept. 29th, and Yom Kippur the 30th. In my first year as RPC Chairperson, I have received a lot of help preparing, for these holidays. I would like to thank Rabbi and everyone who assisted me. See you in Temple. God Bless.

Larry

To everyone in our Temple Beth Shalom Family, and I feel as though you are family, Bob and I wish you a Happy New

Year. May you all be inscribed for a good year filled with

happiness, good health and lots of fun. Hopefully, This year many will come through our doors and find the friendliness of our Temple too enticing to ignore and will make the decision to join us. Until then, please continue to be my helpers by recommending newcomers, those concerned by world events, and anyone seeking affiliation to contact me. L'shanah Tova to all!

Peri

A large load of essential food and school supplies, for children in need here in Cape Coral was delivered to the Cape Coral Caring Center. Thank you to all who contributed! Again this year we will be handing out brown paper bags to support our High Holy Days food drive. Coming in November we will be having a 50 /50 raffle for a complete turkey dinner prize. Also will we have our version of toys for tots. We will be collecting unwrapped toys to be given to local less fortunate children.

Thank you to Larry, Denise, Marc, Robin Fern and Sharon for picking up from Panera each week. Thank you one and all. Your gifts are a blessing to many children. What a mitzvah

Ruth.

School year 2017-18 has begun. Our students returned to class on August 31, 2017 very enthusiastic. In fact, one of the children stated at the end of the first class that he could not believe the class was over. He said, "We had so much fun and it went by so quickly". Hopefully this enthusiasm will carry over throughout the year.

Our High Holiday Youth service will be led this year by Jonah DiLeonardo, Ian DiLeonardo and Edison Greenbaum with musical accompaniment by Michael Scolnick on the guitar. After the Yom Kippur service, the children will start making paper decorations for the Sukkah. On Thursday, October 5, 2017, our students will decorate the Sukkah.

After decorating the Sukkah, as in years past, we will have a pizza party. Parents are encouraged to attend as well. There are many more activities planned for the school. Finally, I would like to wish our students and parents, as well as the congregation, L'Shana Tova Tikatevu.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

In preparation for the High Holy Days the Building & Grounds committee of two; Ken Myers and myself, will attempt to continue the beautification of the Temple. If that doesn’t work, we’ll work on diminishing the eyesores that confront attendees. We have slowly been chipping away at broken concrete, missing door sweeps, paint trim and trying to keep ahead of organizing storage spaces. We have great plans for the parking lot, but currently not enough funds. So we chip away. There are plenty of areas we can work on that just take time and effort and not funds. Our committee desperately needs volunteers to do some very simple tasks such as changing the message on the Marquee out front. It isn’t even a weekly job. No one has come forward yet but we are still hopeful. We sure could use some help with watering the plants. Unfortunately, the underground spr inkler system was abandoned long before I joined the Temple and when the rainy season ends there will be a lot of vegetarian deaths. Could you give 2 hours a week? The cleaning girls have done a very good job so far and they will strip and wax the social hall floor before Rosh Hashana. The Brotherhood is planning on a few “work parties” to help with the building and grounds. My job is to make a list of things the party might work on. If you have any suggestions, please e-mail them to me. If they don’t cost a lot, we will probably pitch right in and do them. By the time you read this, there will be some new Royal Palms replacing some Queen Palms. I hope everyone appreciates the difference; Royal Palms just drop their old leaves when dead, to be picked up off the ground. No ladders, nosaws, justdraggingoutbacktothedumpster.

TBS Goes to a Miracles Game

On August 5th, two dozen Temple Beth S h a l o m d i e - h a r d s b r a v e d t h e threatening weather to attend a baseball game. The Miracles were playing Jupiter, but the clouds were threatening to rain the game out. The brave Temple members entered the enclosed, air-conditioned box seats and waited for the game to start. When it started all was dry, and most fans went out of the box into the covered bleachers just outside the box. The game, with a triple play, a grand-slam homer, 2 stolen base home runs, lots of action, and enough hot dogs and hamburgers to keep everyone happy and well fed. Last time this group baseball game was tried it was rained out twice and then the season ended, so the fear less, optimistic congregants were well rewarded with a home-run day!

A New Tradition History really does repeat itself! I’m referring to Sisterhood’s popular event, mikvah at the gulf. The topic of the mikvah, probably the best known of all the women's rituals, came up in conversation about three years ago at a girls night out gathering. We all agreed that it would be an interesting experience and the idea took flight. Rather than go to an “established” mikvah bath, we decided why not do it up big - in the Gulf of Mexico! We reasoned the Gulf met the condition that the water be free flowing and there was certainly more than the requisite amount of water, the biggest issue our personal ritual didn’t meet was that we couldn’t go into the water sans bathing suits. No problem there! Then Denise generously offered us the use of her and Peter’s beautiful condo overlooking the Gulf and we were off and running. After the ritualistic submerging and prayers, we hung out together at the pool for awhile acting like a bunch of teenagers before returning to the condo and settling in for a lovely potluck lunch. The special blessing that we hadn’t planned on was that we bonded as a group and formed friendships that might not have happened. Needless to say, we agreed to do it again the next year….and the next! Mikvah at the Gulf 2017 took place on Sunday, July 23rd which was coincidentally Erev Rosh Chodesh Av, another women’s ritual time. Success begets success and Mikvah 3 was as wonderful and meaningful as Mikvah 1 so much so hat our hostess Denise declared we can now officially consider Mikvah at the Gulf an annual TBS Sisterhood tradition!

Fifteen years ago I experienced a serious bout of depression that devastating and painful. The mental anguish and the hopelessness that entered my world at the moment when I was at a wonderful place in my career were overwhelming. It was was William Styron has termed it, a period of “Darkness Visible” with a suffocating closure of life snd joy. Through getting the right help, therapy, and medication, and through the support of good and devoted friends. I was able to survive and emerge from that challenge. The aftermath of that experience and subsequent battles with depression appreciation with depression have left me with the appreciation for fragility of life and the importance of friends and community who extend a hand of outreach and compassion in difficult circumstances. Elul, the tradition teaches is a time when G-d is more present, ready to listen and care for the human being. The Hebrew letters of the month, we are told, are an acronym for the phrase,”Ani ledodi vedodi li”. I am (devoted) to my beloved (G-D) and my beloved (G-d )is (devoted)to me. One of the foundational elements of Jewish ethics is the concept of imitatio dei, of following in the footsteps of the Divine in our own behavior. We are challenged, states the Talmud, to clothe the naked, bury the dead, and visit the sick as G-d is described as having done in the Bible. Maimonides extends this to all ethical behavior and demands of us to be G-dlike in all our behavior. Elul is a month to take on the challenge of being a real friend to another, to imitate the very essence of Elul call. It is the time to be fully present and extend the hand of love and support for those who are most vulnerable and hurting, not just those hurting on the outside, but those hurting on the inside in mental anguish and turmoil.
