CHAI SOCIETY
Temple Beth El Chai’ly appreciates the support of our Chai Society Members
for 2020:
Your generosity and participation in this program subsidizes school scholarships and programs, adult education programs, and Jewish Family Life Education programs.

This year’s preparation for High Holidays presented the steepest learning curve – maybe ever!
But with dedication, perseverance, grace and teamwork, Temple Beth El made sure that a meaningful experience could be had by all.
Whether it was attention to the needs of those with young families, or those without technology, those who wanted to be in small groups, or those who felt most comfortable watching online, we took the “something for everyone” approach.
We reached out through phone calls, surveys and sub-committees. We created bubbles. We created sanctuaries at home. Kids made posters. Virtual choirs sang. Shofar blowing, story reading, apple cutting, Torah chanting, Haftara recording, drive-ups, park encounters…and so much more.
All of these eff orts were focused on fi lling a gap that being apart created. Certainly we all have a profound and deep appreciation for being together. It’s true that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but perhaps more importantly, we have grown to recognize that our Beth El family is one we deeply miss.
We are grateful for the dedicated staff and committees who must be acknowledged for their tireless eff orts, yet none of this unique High Holiday season could have been accomplished without YOU! So here’s to 5781. “YOU ” are the “WE” in “WE DID IT.” May we continue to grow from strength to strength, in peace and good health.

Sisterhood Message:
L’shana Tova! We hope that everyone had a peaceful holiday and a meaningful fast. How wonderful to see so many of your faces and reconnect at our opening Wine and Whine virtual meeting last month. While Sisterhood does a lot of fundraising for Temple Beth El, the theme of our programs this year will focus on “Friendraising!” It is so important for us to stay connected, and we hope that many of you will participate in our variety of virtual programs.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Apples and Honey Program this year. Our amazing co-chairs, Margie Strauss and Susan Musselman would like to thank Carol Bernhard, Kathi Katzman, Miriam Zager and Sheryl Block for helping to package the Apples and Honey gifts. And a special thank you to Margie’s husband, Jay, and their houseguests – Ali, Amanda, Seth and Dan – for pitching in too. It was truly a team effort and we appreciate all the support.
Our annual holiday Floral Fund was transformed into a Mitzvah Floral Fund at the suggestion of Bobbe Wiener. Thanks to her efforts and your generosity, we raised over $2500 to be put into a fund to assist TBE families who could use a helping hand to make their holiday tables full this year.
Our apologies for neglecting to thank Lori Wiener for her assistance in making follow-up phone calls for the Calendar program in last month’s article. If you have not sent in your payment yet, kindly do so by October 7th. The deadline for ordering a Sisterhood Calendar/Directory is October 26th and you can contact Bonnie Hammel at [email protected] with any questions.
Sisterhood’s College Connection mailed the irst of three packages to college students. The irst package’s theme is Rosh Hashana. You can
still register your college student for the remaining two packages which will be delivered in time for Hanukkah and Passover, reminding our college students that their synagogue community is thinking of them. The registration form is available on the TBE website under Education.
Sisterhood’s High Holiday Wine Sale along with the Challah/Babka sale and the Fall Flowers Fundraiser were very successful thanks to Melanie May, Jennifer Oxfeld, Fay Kun and Phyllis Kaufman. We hope you saw the Gift Shop lyer and made some
purchases. We invite you to contact Jill Steigerwald or Andy Kopyt to shop virtually at the Sisterhood Gift Shop. Our monthly lyers will showcase holiday items available for purchase. You can schedule a time to visit the gift shop or we also offer no contact pick-up. And inally, a big thank you goes out to all the volunteers who helped sort orders and facilitate contactless pick-up.
Our Gift Card Program is open for business! Contact Alli Lipson ([email protected]) or Erica Stein ([email protected]) to purchase your gift cards! Contactless pick-up is available.
Mark your calendars for October 21st for our Virtual Paid-Up Program where we will be crafting with Rachel Shurman through Zoom. All participants will receive a card making kit. More details and an evite will follow soon. At Paid-Up we will also be kicking off our Purse Bingo Raf le program and will be raf ling off our irst purse for the year. Don’t forget to purchase your raf le tickets. Check your email for all the details.
Sisterhood has gone “Green” and will be using email and Facebook for program invitations and information. Please let us know if you are not receiving the electronic invitations or if your email has recently changed. We will continue to mail paper invitations to our members without email. And if you have not liked the TBE Facebook page yet, please do so; all our great events will be posted on the TBE Facebook page.
Save the date for Sisterhood’s Virtual Fall Brunch and Learn Program on Sunday, November 15th and watch your email for details. As always, there are plenty of opportunities to become involved with Sisterhood. Please contact one of us for additional information. We are looking forward to “seeing” you at Paid-Up!

Bar and Bat Mitzvah
Max Bub, October 24th, 2020
Max is an 8th grade student at Springhouse Middle School. He plays trumpet in the school band and runs on the Cross Country team. Max loves playing most all sports, but he is most passionate about skiing, which he’s been doing since he was a toddler. Max also plays soccer for South Parkland and basketball for the JCC. In his spare time he enjoys playing tennis, fl ag football and video games with his friends. During the summers Max can be found at Pinemere Camp bunking with several of his Hebrew School buddies. Max is most grateful for his tight knit group of friends that he has known since he was a toddler at the JCC. He feels lucky to have such a great group by his side to always have fun with!
Max had originally planned a Mitzvah Project that combined his love of animals with wanting to help the elderly by conducting nursing home visits with his dog Hobbes. Sadly, the current shelter in
place orders for nursing homes have put his project on hold for the time being. In the meantime, Max has been working on a similar Mitzvah Project, in conjunction with JFS, to conduct socially distant visits with local elderly folks living at home. He has been working on creating care packages and delivering them to people’s doorsteps along with his dog Hobbes. He hopes he and Hobbes will soon be able to visit nursing homes in person!
Max and his parents, Sara-Jane and David, along with his brother Jackson, invite the congregation to share in their happiness as he is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah.
Danielle Gordon, October 31st, 2020
Danielle Gordon is an 8th High Honor Roll student at Springhouse Middle School. She has been on her Middle School’s varsity volleyball team and has been on a traveling volleyball club team for the last few years. Danielle also loves to ski during the winter months. Danielle spends her summers at her second home, Camp Nock-A-Mixon. Last year Danielle started volunteering at Jewish Family Service as part of her Bat Mitzvah project and loves helping at the food pantry.
Danielle, along with her parents, Ellen and Lance, and her sister, Amanda, invites the congregation to share in their joy as she is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah.

School Shmooze... by Alicia Zahn, Religious School Director
This year is all about continuity (recognizing what is not changing and keeping the good things going) and fl exibility (adapting in a positive way to what is changing). Religious School teachers are continuing to put the fun into their lessons and fi nd meaningful ways to bring the joy of Judaism to our children. We have adapted by prioritizing our focus so our shorter
time on Zoom is packed with content and also includes purposeful relationship building. We especially look forward to the short burst of time we can see each other in person. So far, these in person times include our Drive Through Parking Lot Kick Off and our Sukkah pop in. But just who is teaching our children? See if you can recognize them by their smiling eyes!
Our drive-through Parking Lot Kick Off included giving tzadakah, picking up school supplies, exchanging holiday greetings, and playing a game! Thanks to all our families, staff , and volunteers who made this Kick Off a success and the beginning of an exciting new school year!
