With the emphasis being on simplicity and available in four standard formats,the 3200 range provides precise temperature control with a host of options.A simple ‘QuickStart’ code is used to configure all of the essential functionsrequired to control your process and, if preferred, this can be preset byEurotherm to your requirements. When accessing the controller HMI you willfind that every parameter is accompanied by a scrolling text message todescribe its function.

The 3200 has a host of advanced features including heater failure detection,timer, setpoint programmer and a recipe feature that is unique in this class ofproduct. All of these features can be configured with an extremely simple touse PC wizard configuration tool. Configurations can be saved to file andreused or modified to suit other applications in the future.

The 3508 and 3504 offer much more than temperature control – advancedfeatures and options make them capable of small machine control. Theyprovide flexible I/O options to control and measure a multitude of processes –temperature, potential, humidity, flow, pressure, level, viscosity, additivedosing and many more. Specialist function blocks, recipe selection, setpointprogrammers, maths, logic, timer functions and flexible communicationoptions are just a few examples of what makes these instruments a key partof a total process solution.

Designed to integrate seamlessly withprogrammable logic controllers and othersupervisory control and monitoring systems the3000 Series provides a unique level of systemintegration.

System integrationBy devolving loop control to a 3000 Seriescontroller a PLC is able to concentrate onproviding fast and effective logic control withoutthe burden of running complex control algorithms.The 3000 Series controllers also offer bettercontrol performance than a PLC, the comfort ofsingle loop integrity and ease of replacementwithout stopping the process.

A wide range of communication options arecatered for by simply plugging in the appropriatemodule. All units support both RS232 and 2-wireRS485 communications using the Modbus RTUnetwork protocol. Additionally the 3508 and 3504support 4-wire RS485 and Profibus DP,DeviceNet® and Modbus TCP network protocols

Serial communicationsUtilising one of the most common protocols usedwithin the Industrial Automation market, theEurotherm implementation of Modbus RTU isbased on a fixed address table. Parameteraddresses are fixed and do not move dependingon how the unit is configured makingcommunication to intelligent masters very easy toaccomplish.

Fieldbus networksProfibus and DeviceNet are used extensively tocommunicate to Siemens and Allen Bradleyprogrammable logic controllers.

The 3500 range can easily be integrated inmachines where loop controllers are required toact as slaves to a PLC.

Using a PC editor the Profibus GSD file requiredfor the PLC can quickly be created by simplyselecting parameters from a pick list.

When using DeviceNet the 3500 EDS file can beregistered and the parameter input and outputtables edited using Allen Bradley’s RSNetWorx™configuration tools.

Ethernet connectivityUtilising the popular Modbus TCP networkprotocol the 3500 controllers can be connectedto an Ethernet network. This enables plug andplay connection to other Eurotherm productssuch as graphic recorders and third party PLCs orSCADA.

Modbus masterThe 3200 provides the facility to broadcast oneparameter using Modbus RTU to a number ofslave units. Typically this would be used toretransmit a Setpoint to other slave zones within afurnace. The 3500 allows full read/write ModbusRTU communications with multiple slave devices.

QuickStart codeA simple 10 digit code can be used to set up allof the essential 3200 functions to control yourprocess. If you specify this code at point of orderyour controller will arrive pre-configured.

Configuration WizardWithin the supporting PC based software, iTools,are configuration Wizards. These Wizards willguide you through the configuration process withinteractive help and graphical demonstration ofconfiguration options.

QuickStart HMIEurotherm have designed a QuickStart HMIWizard for all of the 3500 Range controllers. Injust a couple of minutes the controller can beready for use as the wizard leads the userthrough all of the basic set up via the instrumentHMI. There is no need for additional tools, PCs oreven an extensive knowledge of control.

Informative displaysAll of the 3000 Series displays provide clearmessages and data to ensure operators get theinformation they need about the plant conditions.They provide, clear, complete text information witha custom message facility – (the 3200 usesscrolling text to maximise clarity for operators) –along with help text for each controller function.The 3508 and 3504 also have user-defineddisplays to offer views onto the process that arebest suited to the operation of the plant.

Heater failure detectionThe 3200 range can accommodate a currenttransformer input that can be used to monitor thestatus of the heaters. Normally used to provideearly indication of a heater fault, this input canalso be used to measure the actual currentflowing and indicate the value on the front HMI,provide alarm output, or make informationavailable to a supervisory system for power usagecalculations.

Easy recipe selectionRecipes can be used to change the operatingparameters of the controller or even to change thefull configuration - allowing one basic controller tobe easily adapted to many applications. Recipescan be selected by the controller HMI using anunderstandable user defined name, by externalhardware signals, or by digital communications.

Config adaptorPC configuration of all 3000 Series can beachieved by using a configuration adaptor. It givesEurotherm iTools the ability to communicate andconfigure devices without any power beingconnected. This device is ideal for distributors andOEMs who need to stock a wide range ofoptions.

Flexible and Creative SolutionsSetpoint programmingAn impressive Ramp/Soak programmer isavailable in the 3500. The ability to store up to 50different programs, each with dual channelcapability makes its ideal for applications such asheat treatment furnaces, autoclaves andenvironmental chambers – where often more thanone variable needs to be profiled. The 3500 hasfunctionality not normally found in a product ofthis class and its flexibility in being able to interactwith other function blocks makes it a very powerful device.

I/O expanderThe I/O expander provides increased programmerfunctionality by increasing the digital I/O capabilityand expands the 3500logic capacityby up to40 I/O.

Graphical Wiring Editor

The 3500 is capable of providing simple solutionsto demanding applications. Eurotherm iToolsincludes a Graphical Wiring Editor to quicklyimplement and document such applications withinthe controller. This flexible tool provides drag anddrop wiring and function block placement to savetime in configuration and to aid with plantdiagnostics.

Specialist function blocksThe 3500 supports a comprehensive range offunction blocks to provide solutions with simpleconfiguration.

Whether it’s for excellence in control, ease of useor its flexible and creative solutions, the 3000Series can be used in many applications to solveproblems and save time and money.

TimerThe simple timer in the 3200 may be used to control batchoperations, eg. food ovens, sterilisers, fryers. Ideal for anyapplication requiring a single dwell at the end of either acontrolled ramp or natural approach to setpoint without theneed for an additional timing device.

RecipesThe 3000 recipe function is unique in a controller of this class. Recipes can bestored under a user-defined name to recall a number of parameter settings. Thesesettings may include operating variables or configuration parameters, providing avery powerful means of altering the set up of a controller in a single operation.Recipes may be recalled either from the HMI, over the communications link, orusing digital inputs.

FeedforwardFeedforward is a control technique used tocompensate for future disturbances or processchanges. It provides an offset on the controller PIDcalculation to ensure that corrective action is takento prevent the measured PV being disturbed. Atypical application is additive dosing. By measuringthe flow rate upstream from the dosing pump it ispossible to use the feedforward feature of the3500 to achieve an output proportional to the fluidflow rate. This means that the dosing rateimmediately tracks any changes in flow rate andso prevents any possibility of dangerous overdosing.

Heater failure detectionA current transformer input in the 3200measures the current switched through theload. The measurement is filtered so that theon current and off currents can be separated.From this it is possible to diagnose several loadfaults including partial load failure, over currentand an SSR fault. Typical applications includeplastic extrusion, laboratory ovens and otherapplications where early indication of heaterfailure can save energy and rework costs.

ProgrammerMany applications need to vary temperature, or other process values, with time. Thesetpoint is varied by using a setpoint program. The program is stored as a series of ‘ramp’and ‘dwell’ segments. All 3000 Series controllers provide this feature. The 3200 has anextremely easy to use 8 segment programmer for simple applications while the 3500 has avery flexible dual channelprogrammer withstorage for 50 programs.The 3500 is ideal forfurnace, environmentalchamber and autoclaveapplications that requiregreater flexibility.

Dual loopThe Dual Loop capability in the 3500 makes it idealfor controlling interactive processes such as thosefound in carburising furnaces, environmentalchambers, autoclaves and fermenters. All of theseapplications require control and often setpointprogramming of two variables. By using theadvanced maths and logic functions within the 3500,intelligent control strategies can be created tocompensate for interactive effects between variablesand maintain them at setpoint.

Dual valve positioningThe Dual Valve Positioning (VP) feature on the 3500allows two motorised valves to be modulated fromone controller. Typically one valve would actuate aburner or hot air inlet and the other a cooling damper.This feature removes the need to interface thecontroller via external positioners.

The VP feature can be used with or without afeedback potentiometer and can also be used withPID in either control channel to provide controlstrategies such as PID Heat/VP Cool.

Transducer scalingUser calibration can be performed in all 3000 Seriescontrollers.

The 3200 provides a simple two point calibration onits input and the 3500 has a comprehensive set oftransducer scaling options that make it ideal for meltpressure, load cell or comparison type calibrations.

Master commsIn all 3000 Series controllers it is possibleto use the Modbus RTU communicationlink to send a value (often setpoint) fromone controller to a network of slavedevices - providing the economicalcreation of multi-zone temperature controlsolutions

ZirconiaThe zirconia block calculatescarbon potential, oxygenconcentration and dew pointbased on the temperature andprobe mV measurements from azirconia oxygen probe. Probeburn-off sequence anddiagnostic alarms are alsoavailable to help extend the life ofthe probe and predict impendingprobe failure while minimisingdowntime and rework. Thisfeature enables the 3500 to beused to control carbon potentialin an atmosphere furnace, an inert atmosphere in asintering furnace and dewpoint in an endothermic generator.
