Dear Reader,

You might have noticed that a couple of years ago, we added the tag “Audio | Networks” to our logo. We are truly in the age of the network, and the tag refl ects our view that broadcasters have reason to be happy for this technology revolution. Just as 1975 was the dawn of the computers-everywhere age, 1995 was the dawn of the networks-everywhere age. Given its impact on daily life, it’s hard to believe that It was only ten years ago that the Netscape Web browser appeared. Ten years ago, many of your stations were still using cart machines and open reels. As PCs grew in power and fell in cost, they replaced tape. Now computer networks are on a trajectory to take over station connection and routing functions.

Telos has always been about networks, starting with our fi rst product, a digital interface to the analog telephone network. When ISDN came along offering a digital connection to the Telco network, we gave you the Zephyr codec. As testimony to the power of networks to enhance broadcast operations, the Zephyr - with over 12,000 units in daily use around the world - has become the most successful product in radio broadcasting’s digital era. Now, with IP and Ethernet networks everywhere, we are bringing the benefi ts of these modern networking technologies to your radio studios with our Axia family.

In the USA, HD Radio brings us into the digital age, and just in time to compete with all the digital alternatives. We’re introducing a new Omnia made just for HD that sounds great and has the diversity delay built-in. Perhaps the “killer-app” for HDFM is surround. Surround systems are already in high-end cars and we need to be broadcasting to them. All the home-theater-in-a-box systems you see on consumer electronics shop fl oors should have HD surround tuners in them – and many probably would if we were transmitting this signal today. Our Axia networked studio components make discrete surround studios a practical cost-effective reality. At NAB 2005, many of you saw and heard a complete surround signal chain from player to HD receiver using Axia studio components, the impressive FhG/MPEG HD surround codec that we support, and Omnia processing.

Not that we have forgotten analog FM. The Omnia processor is on-air at more than half of the USA’s top 100 FM radio stations, as well as at hundreds of major broadcasters worldwide such as the BBC, the NRJ Network, RTL Radio and the Korean Broadcasting System. The latest enhancements, introduced in this catalog, improve upon Omnia’s already famous loud and clean sound.

Within the broadcast equipment industry, there are some who prefer the tried-and-true. But we prefer to help you prosper by taking advantage of the new. It has been our role for over 20 years.

Page 4: Telos Catalog March 2005 - avc.hr · you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing

Axia, a Telos company, is focused on helping you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing engines and control surfaces, as well as a wide range of other devices used to condition, mix, and distribute audio within the broadcast plant - with a unique advantage: Every piece of Axia gear is fully networked, including the audio!

Axia offers a variety of Ethernet networked audio devices - think of these as “building blocks” - that allow you to assemble different applications for your radio studios. For example, a couple of Livewire interface nodes, connected together, can move a group of audio signals over a CAT-5e/6 wire from one room to another. Insert some fiber in between,

and go across campus. Attach a few more nodes and an Ethernet switch and you have a distributed multi-room routing switcher. Plug in a control surface and a mix engine and you have a powerful networked broadcast console. Now, plug your delivery system PC into that same Ethernet switch and you can transfer files, live audio, and associated data - all over the very same net.

Axia simplifies, saves you money, gives you choices, and prepares you for today’s computer and data-centric studios because it takes advantage of the latest developments from the world of computer networking.

“All Axia products are based on Livewire, a pioneering technology invented at Telos to convey low-delay and high-reliability audio over switched Ethernet.

With Livewire, a single Ethernet cable carries real-time uncom-pressed digital audio, device control messages, program associated data and even routine network traffi c. An entire facility can be wired in hours instead of weeks. Expanding or modifying your system is simple, thanks to Axia’s inherent scalability and modularity.

The computer, phone, and home entertainment industries expect data, audio, video and telephone to share a common network infrastruc-ture. ‘Converged networks’ is what they call this. Modern Ethernet has been designed to enable these multi-media applications. With computers so prominent in radio studios today, as audio players, editors and storage devices, why shouldn’t broadcasters benefi t as well?

As one example, Axia simplifi es studio infrastructure by eliminat-ing sound cards. Windows PCs use a software driver that emulates a sound card, enabling delivery sys-tems and editor’s software applica-tions to pass audio directly to and from the network using their usual Ethernet connection.

If you fi nd it hard to imagine com-puter networks replacing the entire audio wiring infrastructure of the radio plant, consider this: Not so long ago, broadcasters could hardly imagine PCs replacing cart ma-chines. Now it’s diffi cult to fi nd a station still using carts. Networked audio is now not only possible; it is practical, inexpensive, reliable, fl ex-ible and scalable. The networked studio has arrived.”

—Michael “Catfi sh” Dosch

Axia products deliver 24/7 operation in the most intense broadcast environments. But just because our devices are industrial-strength doesn’t mean we compromised on the details that make using our products a pleasure for engineers and operators alike. Have a look at the front panel on an audio adapter node and you’ll notice a clever dual-duty display. Engineering can use it for quick diagnostic and confi guration queries. The rest of the time, the display provides confi dence metering of each input and output.

You’ll really need to look twice when you see the back of the Mixing StudioEngine. This powerful engine provides all the DSP mixing, sweetening, and processing required to support the SmartSurface console. But why look twice? Because all the connections into and out of the StudioEngine are via a single 1000Base-T Ethernet port. The audio signals are distributed via network to locations more convenient to the audio sources and destinations. One capable console. One Ethernet connection. Sneaks up on you, doesn’t it?

5

Did you say networked audio?

Page 6: Telos Catalog March 2005 - avc.hr · you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing

Every broadcaster needs to move signals from one room to another. Sometimes, it’s a simple line selector that grabs signals from news or production to go to air. Sometimes it’s distributing a program feed that can be picked up and used by multiple destinations. And in some facilities, you need a full-up crosspoint routing switcher that allows any source to feed any destination. Because all Axia IP audio devices are networked, every system has inherent routing capabilities. Those TDM routing switchers others are trying to pass off as “state of the art”, could easily cost $50,000 for even a modest facility and well into six fi gures for larger plants. Axia puts an end to that nonsense!

Whether a few dozen signals or thousands, Axia routing switchers are more fl exible, more scalable and more cost-effective than any alternative. Analog and digital signals are merged seamlessly and everything is carried over standard Ethernet cable, saving tons of money on cabling (and the labor to install it). Plus there is no extra cost to locate the audio nodes where you need

them. With old-style routers, you either run thick cables to a central mainframe or pay for extra hardware to extend out the audio connectors. With an Axia distributed routing system, you put the nodes wherever you need them, keeping audio cables short and consolidating all digital traffi c on convenient and inexpensive standard network cabling. Because it’s Ethernet and IP-based, you can monitor audio with any networked PC and with an ordinary browser without special hardware.

Meet some of the devices:Axia audio nodes connect audio to the studio network. The AES node supplies eight digital AES3 inputs and eight outputs. The Analog node provides eight balanced stereo analog ins and outs with “tweak-grade” audio performance. And the Microphone Node has eight Phantom-powered mic inputs and eight balanced stereo line-level analog outputs.

The Router Selector Node works like a traditional “X to Y” switching router control head. Scroll the list of available sources, or use the eight programmable

“radio buttons” for instant access to frequently-used sources. The router selector has AES3 and analog I/O as well as a headphone jack.

The Axia Network Audio Driver for Windows® interface connects PC audio directly to the network without sound cards, via Ethernet. It also provides GPIO-like start/stop and other control functions over the same network. It’s available with newer versions of high-end audio delivery and editing software applications such as those from Enco, Prophet, BE and others. Ask your favorite delivery system software company if their software is Livewire-enabled.

For sophisticated facility-wide routing applications, use the Pathfi nder PC routing control software for centralized auto- mated control, via IP, of every Livewire node in your plant.

The Axia GPIO node has 40 opto-isolated logic inputs and 40 opto-isolated closure-type outputs to provide traditional machine logic and remote control.

Networked Audio: Anywhere You Need It

Axia is amazingly scalable. Connect a few studios – or a hundred!

7

The Axia IP-Audio Driver lets PCs exchange digital audio directly with Livewire networks using their standard Ethernet NIC - eliminating the needfor sound cards or expensive outboard boxes. The IP-Audio Driver installs on any Win-dows® PC, and works with delivery systems, audio editors and other applications that support standard Windows audio. The standard IP-Audio Driver gives you one stereo input and one stereo output. Need more I/O? Multi-chan-nel versions that provide up to eight inputs and eight outputs are available from Axia devel-opment partners; check out www.AxiaAudio.com/partners/ for a complete list.

Axia iPlay PC software can be installed on any Windows® PC to listen to networked audio; anyone in the facility can easily monitor any IP-Audio stream. Engineers will love the ability to access any signal from an ordinary PC. Used with PC speakers/soundcard, iPlay is a very low cost convenient way to give monitoring capabilities to PDs, GMs and sales staff.

Pathfi nderPC Router Control Software provides complete control of every Axia Node in your plant, allowing you to build and control very sophisticated facility-wide routing applications. Pathfi nder can change between presets via manual selection (on a PC), on a day-part schedule, or in response to an external trigger from an automation system or other source. Pathfi nderPC can even be programmed to sense problems, such as silence at a particular audio port, and patch around it without user intervention.

When we fi rst introduced Omnia-6, it set the industry pundits back on their heels. 96 kHz sampling/24-bit resolution? Very cool! Five bands of AGC? Six bands of limiting? Unheard of! So much power it was amazing. As it turns out, the powerful, musical, natural sound ofOmnia-6 was just what broadcasters were waiting for. Omnia-6 became, and remains, the in-demand processor at major-market stations around the globe. This left us with a challenge: How to raise the bar?

Omnia-6EX met that challenge and conquered it with new processing enhancements which resulted in more bass punch, more vocal clarity... even more exciting and captivating than the original. Omnia-6EX includes two simultaneous audio processing paths, fi ve bands of AGC with a six-band distortion-controlled limiter for FM and a precision Look-Ahead limiter for DAB, HD Radio, satellite or network streaming. And Omnia-6EX provides listeners with the full 20kHz audio bandwidth that digital FM is capable of delivering.

And now there’s the ultimate in Omnia power: Omnia-6EXi.

Omnia-6EXi contains an integrated Diversity Delay that helps HD Radio broadcasters eliminate analog connections to the HD exciter and ensures independent analog and digital program streams. And an exclusive new LoIMD Clipper that actually suppresses intermodulation distortion to deliver audio that’s cleaner, clearer and more detailed than ever - no matter how aggressive your processing. (If you already own an Omnia-6 or 6ex, don’t worry - there’s a low-cost upgrade available.)

All of which makes the world’s hottest on-air audio machine even hotter. You’ll hear Omnia processing on the #1 rated stations in New York and Los Angeles. As a matter of fact, the majority of the top 100 highest-rated FM stations in America have upgraded to Omnia in just a few short years. Page 17: Telos Catalog March 2005 - avc.hr · you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing

“In developing Omnia CD, we did intensive research into the methodology of studio mastering. We quickly realized that studio mastering in some ways resembled broadcast audio processing: both processes must adhere to a strict peak level, and both use the processing to create or preserve a signature sound for their respective medium. While the amount of processing varies between these two, the concepts are strikingly similar.

We also knew that the last few years have seen a strong trend toward cutting ‘hotter’ CDs. We’ve even seen CDs that push the audio level right to the 0dBfs point, making it a self-imposed clipper of sorts, to achieve what sounds like a ‘fuller’ effect to the character of the audio.

The downside is that extremely high levels of aliasing distortion are created from that clipping process.

So, after studying the technical needs are for the mastering process, we went back to the drawing board and designed Omnia CD. This processor is more than just a low distortion peak limiter; it contains a wide range of specialized processing functions to allow mastering engineers to fi x the mix, tweak the fi nal EQ and create that desired signature sound for their artist. And Omnia CD lets you master right up to the 0dBfs limit without the annoying distortion caused by other methods.”

—Frank Foti

Broadcasters have known for years that Omnia audio processors deliver sound that’s stunningly clear, clean and loud. So, with the recent trend toward “hotter” music mastering, it was no surprise when friends from the recording industry asked us to develop an Omnia to help mixing engineers make loud, clean CD masters.

Applying lessons learned in broadcast processing, the Omnia development team devised Omnia CD, with a unique fi nal limiter especially suited to the needs of the mastering environment. Using an innovative proprietary method, this

system yields incredible perceived loudness, but retains the punch and clarity desired by producers and engineers in the broadcast and recording fi elds. Omnia CD also provides ultra-precise peak control for mastering at 0 dBfs.

So how does Omnia CD sound? “Omnia CD has been a huge help in mastering CDs and even diffi cult soundtracks... I can’t imagine being without it. Omnia CD has the ‘Three C’s:’ clear, clean and cool,” says Grammy-award winning engineer Kirk Yano, owner of Planet To Planet Studios, New York.

Omnia CD: Master Your Universe

More than just an audio processor, Omnia CD has so many unique tools and algorithms inside that it may be the only processor you’ll need to master a recording. Structurally speaking, there’s an input Wideband AGC circuit for initial level control, fi ve-band AGC, a bass and stereo enhancement section, a six-band dynamic peak limiter section, and a non-aliasing, distortion controlled fi nal clipper to help achieve the exact sound you’ve imagined.

Heard Around the World

Heard Around the World

Page 20: Telos Catalog March 2005 - avc.hr · you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing

When we fi rst married MP3 with ISDN in 1993, we had no idea that their offspring would grow up to be the most-loved audio codec ever. But it has, and its popularity keeps growing - there are now more than 12,000 Zephyr codecs in radio stations and production studios around the globe. Zephyr Xstream in your rack or remote kit gives you the satisfaction of knowing you’ve got the industry’s number-one ISDN codec, assuring crystal-clear CD-quality connections to anywhere in the world.

Zephyr saves you time and money. A Zephyr Xstream at your studio becomes a “universal codec,” connecting with every popular ISDN codec for full-duplex, 20kHz stereo audio. You can transmit and receive two mono channels to and from separate locations, even transmit and decode streaming AAC and MP3 audio over Ethernet. And in the fi eld, Zephyr Xstream is a powerful remote tool. Intuitive step-by-step operation, contact sensitive help, and simple user interfaces make operation easy even for non-technical personnel. Zephyr models with built-in mixers and phantom power help reduce equipment inventory and setup time.

The Best Way From Here to Anywhere

Page 21: Telos Catalog March 2005 - avc.hr · you build studio facilities to meet today’s most demanding broadcasting applications. Axia specializes in audio routing switchers, digital mixing/processing

There are three Zephyr Xstream models with capabilities tailored to fi t your need, but all Zephyr Xstream models share these advanced features:

• MPEG2 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). This new standard for audio coding permits true CD-quality stereo transmission with a connection speed of just 128 kbps.

• Low-Delay MPEG4 AAC-LD coding. Using AAC-LD, you’ll enjoy crystal-clear audio quality with greatly reduced encoding delay for smooth, natural bidirectional remotes.

• Works with companion Zephyr Xport portable codec to receive 15kHz audio using a POTS fi eld connection.

• V.35 option allows connection to serial synchronous data equipment for use with services such as dedicated lines, Switched 56 or Satellite services.

• A unique Dual Receive mode in MPEG Layer 3 allows reception of independent audio streams arriving from two distant codecs – great for bilingual broadcasts.

• Auto Receive mode searches and determines the correct decoder settings for the incoming audio stream.

• Advanced technology with low heat generation means no cooling fan for silent operation.

Zephyr Xstream allows you to transmit two-way 20kHz stereo audio plus ancillary data anywhere in the world using a single ISDN circuit, or 15 or 20kHz mono audio on a single ISDN “B” channel. With high performance digital mixers and Phantom mic power, Zephyr Xstream MX and MXP are complete remote studios packed into a single box. Four-input DSP stereo mixer has dynamics processing by Omnia. Four independently adjustable headphone outputs can combine local audio with a remote mix-minus feed.

Flexible, Economical, Easy To Use

Going on the road? At just seven pounds (3.18 kg), the small, light Zephyr Xport is the perfect companion. At the heart of Zephyr Xport is a custom DSP-based modem, optimized for maximum performance with audio codecs. Exclusive Telos technology lets Xport use a standard analog phone line (or digital phone line, with the optional ISDN interface) to connect with any Zephyr Xstream ISDN codec; a full-featured mixer with mic and line inputs (and selectable audio processing by Omnia) completes the package.

With Zephyr Xport as part of your remote system, your studio’s Zephyr Xstream becomes a universal codec. It connects with both Xport and ISDN codecs saving money,

rack space, training time, telephone lines, and conserving on console or router audio inputs and mix-minus outputs.

“Our clients are astonished at how good a Zephyr Xport can make a POTS connection sound”, comments Telos Support Supervisor, David Jablonski. Our partnership with Coding Technologies resulted in the use of ground-breaking aacPlus coding with Spectral Band Replication to deliver stunning reproduction of voice, music or both - 15kHz broadcast audio from any standard phone line to your studio. And when ISDN is available, Zephyr Xport features your choice of MPEG4 AAC-LD low-delay coding for near-instantaneous broadcast-quality bidirectional communication and G.722 for third-party codec connectivity.

“We developed custom modem technology for Zephyr Xport that takes advantage of the telephonenetwork’s ability to cross-connect analog and digital phone lines. It’s the same principle Telos uses in our TWOx12 and Series 2101 ISDN talkshow systems.

In the fi eld, you can connect your Zephyr Xport to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) analog lines. Since the majority of the public switched telephone network is now completely digital, the POTS call from a Zephyr Xport is converted from analog to digital at the nearest Telco Central Offi ce. It then continues on it’s digital path all the way to the studio, allowing you to connect with your Zephyr Xstream at the studio using the same ISDN line you already have. And of course, Xport can connect to an ISDN line in the fi eld as well. The end result is that Xport saves you the cost of extra receive codecs, extra phone lines and extra studio infrastructure while expanding your remote connection options.

Zephyr Xport sounds fantastic. The aacPlus method improves the effi ciency of the codec: aacPlus, the combination of MPEG’s AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) and SBR (Spectral Band Replication). This method improves the effi ciency of the codec by 30% over “plain” AAC –which, itself, is 30% more effi cient than Layer 3.

You’ll also enjoy signifi cantly more stable connections than with ordinary POTS codecs, thanks to the ISDN link at the studio end of the call. Our custom DSP-based modem is optimized for stability and audio transmission, whereas some codecs use off-the-shelf modems better suited for data transmission. This technology results in rock-solid connections that codecs limited to pure analog transmission simply can’t provide.”

— Rolf TaylorZephyr Xport is the ultimate portable codec. Custom Telos modem technology enables transmission over POTS or ISDN lines; a mixer section with Mic & Line inputs reduces your equipment needs. A MIX control lets you blend IFB audio with send audio for headphone and PA feeds. Ethernet port allows you to feed PCM audio directly into Xport from any Windows® based computer or control it remotely using any standard Web browser.

MPEG Technology From TelosTelos was the first in the world to license and use MP3, so we know this tech cold. Our software and hardware MP3 products are the result of close cooperation with FhG, MP3’s inventor, and our many years of experience making professional-grade MP3 work for our clients.

Telos products ensure that bit- reduced audio sounds its best. Withpoint-to point or point-to multipoint streaming encoders, decoders, AAC and MP3 encoding software, Telos brings you a comprehensive suite of professional tools for your coded audio.

The world’s most popular ISDN codecs are also perfect for LAN and WAN IP streaming applications.

Has a range of standard MPEG cod-ing options: MPEG Layer 3 and AAC, for indistinguishable source-from-in-put at only 128 kbps. Fully remotable via Ethernet. Both analog and AES3 input/output.

Zephyr Xstream

We know its strengths and weaknesses. We also recognized the next logical step beyond MP3 when it became available, namely MPEG AAC. The Xstream was built around AAC, while still offering G.722, Layer 2, and MP3, for the utmost compatibility with older technology. AAC offers broadcasters and audio professionals the following advantages:

• Independent testing confirms that AAC is the best-sounding pure perceptual codec yet developed

• 30% more powerful than MP3, means better quality or lower bit rates

• Better cascadability. Ready for HD-radio and DRM

• AAC-LD, the low delay variant, offers MP3 quality with 70% less delay

• aacPlus adds spectral band replication, giving Zephyr Xstream the ability to receive the best quality audio in the industry via a POTS connection from a companion Xport

• aacPlus is 30% more efficient than AAC alone
