In this context, Taran’s study attempts to communicate the differentways in which the relationship between Hindus and Muslims living inAligarh influences the everyday existence of schoolgirls growing upin an increasingly polarized context. The manifestation of this fissuredinter-community relationship in low-intensity crises and prejudices indaily classroom interactions is a key focus of the study. Viewing thegrievances and aspirations of a community as valuable resources forpeacebuilding, it uses the lens of gender to study the perpetuation ofcommunal stereotypes and how these are replicated and transferredacross generations.

In the backdrop of a range of events that have increased communaltensions – such as the Babri Masjid demolition, the Gujarat genocide,India-Pakistan cricket matches, to name a few – the students sharewith each other their experiences of living through riots, and views onquestions such as, “What does religion mean to you? What do othersthink of your religion? How do you want others to think of yourreligion? What are the visual images that come to your mind whenyou hear the words “Muslim women” and “Hindu women”?

These questions generated strong emotions – anger, suspicion, fear,tears and insecurity – among the students. Yet, at the end of the heateddebates, the personal friendships enabled the girls to rise above thecommunal hostility that surrounded them and to empathize with thedifferent perspectives that each articulated. As Taran concludes, it wasthe thread of “familiarity” that wove together the diverse experiencesof the girls and that facilitated an atmosphere of respect andcoexistence, even as an environment of communal hostility prevailedin Aligarh.

In order to retain the essence and spirit of the views shared by theparticipants of this project, the dialogues, which were carried out inHindi and Urdu, have been presented here in their original form,accompanied by a translation in English. For this reason, the researcherand the editor have not tampered with the text in any significantmanner; thereby enabling the reader to have unmediated access to theperspectives of the students.

reopened. It was winter, and I was twelve. In the grey half light ofsunless days, furious whispers did the rounds between students.Invariably, we found ourselves repeating the stories we had heard inour homes through those bitter months of acrimony. We listened tofirst hand accounts of the violence from Girls Who Knew, and therewas no doubt whose fault it was. How could They! The Other hadtaken a face, and it was that of our “non-Muslim” friends who now satacross the aisle from us. Between us lay an angry chasm of silence.We never spoke about it, then or later, but I suspect that for most of us,the difference between Us and Them became clear in that brutal silence.It was to probe this silence – to find if it still roamed these corridors –and to crack its steely surface, to bring forth the things that are leftunsaid, that I had returned to school.

This, then, was the central objective of the project – to startconversations and to listen into schoolgirls talking about their lives.The attempt was to use these dialogues to map the experience ofgrowing up at a time of post-liberalisation flux in a small town innorth India. Simultaneously, the focus was on foregrounding themanner in which communal tensions and issues are manifested andnegotiated in the classroom. Aligarh, one of the eight most communallyvolatile cities in India, is an interesting place to locate this. Peculiarlypoised between various fault lines of identity and conflict, part mofussiltown and part overlarge industrial centre, it has a sizeable andelectorally significant Muslim minority of 38 percent. While the lastmajor cycle of riots was in 1990 during the Rath Yatra, the fragility ofethnic-communal relations in the city has become frighteningly clearon several occasions, through intermittent and localized incidents ofcommunal violence. More recently, the Gujarat genocide led to a spateof murders and minor clashes. Less dramatically, this fissuredcommunal relationship is manifested in the topography of communitymohallas, networks of trust and association and the conflicts ofeveryday life. It is such low-intensity crises that form the area of mystudy, in their manifestations within the classroom.

The idea was thus to tap into discussions amongst students growingup in a context that tends towards extreme communal postures, theperpetual presence of religious tensions and the constant possibility of

workers, lock factory labourers to the service class who are posted insmall towns with no ‘good’ schools.

This project worked with a similarly mixed group of students, agedbetween 13–15 years. During the initial stages we worked with largergroups of 30-35 students in a broad workshop format, taking updifferent themes at every meeting and exploring them through roleplay, collage making, puppetry, group discussions and dummynewspapers. Over time, a core group of fifteen girls emerged, almostequally divided between Hindus and Muslims, who were engaged indepth interviews in smaller groups and individually. I also intervieweda few protagonists at their homes, and several times we had longerdiscussions at my house. The idea was to try and achieve a holisticunderstanding of the worlds each of my protagonists occupied – worldswhich were often sharply different though co-existent, and whichoccasionally clashed. These different stages of the project weredocumented through audio recordings and still photographs; theparticipants also kept journals that recorded their own versions ofactivities and outcomes. These elements form the layers that I willjuxtapose in this report.

The principle behind the structure of this report is to allow for arelatively unmediated expression of ideas and arguments by theparticipants of this project. It sounds simple but it is a rare quality in atext that it does no more and no less than offer access to the ideas ofthe constituency it claims to “study”. This report tries to achieveprecisely this. My intention is not to speak on behalf of the participants,give “voice to the voiceless” or to explain their articulations, or locatethem in theoretical boxes or even use them to push my own petarguments or agendas. The report essentially reproduces the ebb andflow of our conversations and arguments across diverse media, withexplanations being added only where needed for the purpose of clarity.As a researcher, however, I do not claim to be an invisible, objectiveentity. Rather, I have attempted to use my presence reflexively, to addan additional layer of meaning to the report, always consciouslyseparating my voice from those of the other participants. I cannot claimto have been entirely successful in this regard-after all, my own identitycan be argued to have influenced the answers I got. My attempt here is

A Note on the Translation

The original language of conversations with the participants wasHindustani, scattered with English. In the original text as well as thetranslation, my attempt has been to tamper as little as possible withtheir language. Punctuation and grammar have been sacrificed toaccommodate the rhythm and flow of their talk. I have also leftunchanged the unique words that have become common usage withinthe school, like ‘boundations’ (boundaries+limitations) and my favoritefrom my own school days, ‘proudy’. These defy translation and I havelet them stand in the text, hoping for latitude from the readers for such‘errors’ that may be technically incorrect but communicate a lot aboutthe world where they come from if read with empathy and a little bitof humour.

Saida

Jagged edges and quick repartee, bubbling with controversialpronouncements and unpopular opinions. But under the bluster,there is real courage. If this project owes a debt of gratitude to anyone person, it is Saida, with her head-on approach to life and herunflinching readiness to state her honest views on the most touchytopics, who moved situations out of polite impasses to heatedarguments. It is ironic that if anyone of the participants had reasonto be hesitant and confused it was Saida, who inhabits spaces andparadigms that violently, directly and routinely, clash.

Saida is an outsider in her class. Her penchant for outspokenessand quick temper have made her unpopular. I suspect this rejectionhurts more than she shows, and she has learnt early what it is to bejudged by a mass, to be matched against an imposed consensus of“acceptable views” and be held outside the pale. Her classmatesfind her difficult to get along with, tough to fathom, possiblybecause they cannot experience the fragmentation of meaning shelives with, each day of her life. Saida, as I saw her, inhabited aworld with contantly shifting poles of meaning and values. Thingsher classmates talked about, ideas she learnt in school, would becontradicted by her domestic world, often actively discouraged byparents, peers and authority figures. She travelled each day froma world where it was the done thing to glorify Pakistan, wheresomeone talking the language of ‘Others’ would be mocked, whereparents certified the reality of this world over the other. Herclassmates, especially those with the luxury of smoother overlapsbetween domestic ethos and the dominant value system, alienatedher further with their smug certitudes. They just couldn’t ‘be’ there,in her alternative reality, or even admit to its possibility in theirimagination.

Towards Closure

At the beginning of this project, when I approached the schoolauthorities for permission to work in AMU GHS, there wereapprehensions thatI may create a negative impact on the girls. “What if it ends up creatingbad feelings between them”, they asked. The concern is entirely totheir credit, since there had already been a bad experience with atelevision crew which had engineered a pointless slanging match onpurdah. They were wary of letting in another experiment along thesame lines.

There were moments during the early days of the project whenI wondered if they were right. At that crucial moment, when the gloveshad come off, correctness had gone out the window and I could glimpsehuge reservoirs of emotions and ideas about to spring forth, in thatsplit second of infinite possibility and incredible change, I wouldwonder –which way will it go? The possibility that existing divideswould be deepened by the discussions I initiated was a real andfrightening one. But it was a scenario that counted without the singlemindedness of my friends, the schoolgirls.

Had I wanted to, I could not have curbed the pace or direction ofthe discussions. As one of the participants wrote to me in her diary,“For the first time, someone is asking our opinions. It feels nice to beso important.” So nice, apparently, that there was no stopping the streamof conversations, discussions and confidences once they had started.The girls chased me up corridors, caught up in classrooms, ready toshare their lives with me anytime I wanted to, sometimes with thecaveat of “Don’t tell a soul”, but often with complete trust.

At some point during these discussions, a pattern emerged. I realizedthat even in the middle of the worst arguments, the most ferociousdebates, the most resentful allegations of outrage against people orcommunities, they always, through constant references and disclaimers,reminded me and themselves that they were talking about people theyknew. Their friends, flesh and blood entities with a face and a name,which they knew, rather than an indistinct Other, a demonizedcommunity removed from their lives. This, to my mind, is the crucial
