Welcome to the 17th IDPE Annual ConferenceMonday 11 and Tuesday 12 June 2018
Congratulations on finding the time to attend the UK’s leading conference for senior leaders, alumni relations and schools’ development professionals. It is an exciting year for the annual conference as we move to the Hilton Birmingham Metropole for the first time and we are delighted that you are able to be here with us.
Whether you are communicating your school’s vision, making an ask, demonstrating to donors the difference they have already made or just explaining to your colleagues what development and alumni relations is all about, you are telling a story.
We are aiming to inspire, encourage and equip you to Tell your story in more engaging, innovative and creative ways.
We are thrilled to be welcoming some truly outstanding speakers across the two days of the conference, many of whom have a national or even international reputation in the charitable, education and fundraising sectors. We are enormously grateful to every one of them for giving so generously of their time, wisdom and insight.
Huge thanks are due to Jo Beckett and her wonderful IDPE team who have been working tirelessly since last year to make this conference the best yet. They have been ably supported in this by our conference committee, the IDPE trustees and other volunteers who have given many hours of help and assistance on top of their already busy day jobs to ensure this year’s conference is a success. Thank you to each and every one of them.
As well as giving you a chance to step away from the office and invest a couple of days in thinking about the big picture, we are keen to give you the practical tools you need to maintain the momentum and make change happen when you get back to your desk. With this in mind we have asked every speaker to include “takeaways” to help you tackle the real issues which await you back in the everyday world. Watch out for these.
One of the most valuable aspects of this conference is the chance to spend time with your peers from other schools and our sponsors and exhibitors, sharing your questions, experiences and advice. Be bold in making new connections and sharing the challenges which face you back in your institution. Whatever your issue, there is bound to be someone else here who has been in a similar situation and will only be too happy to share their experiences with you. The more people you speak to, the greater your chances of finding the answers you are looking for, so go forth and network.
Schools have compelling stories to tell about changed lives and transformed communities. The next two days are all about helping you articulate your school’s story in even more engaging ways, so dive in and make the most of all the opportunities that are waiting for you here.
Sir Tim Smit is best known for his achievements in Cornwall. He ‘discovered’ and then restored ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’ with John Nelson, which is now one of the UK’s best loved gardens. Tim is Executive Vice Chair and Co Founder of the multi award-winning Eden Project in Cornwall. Since its opening in 2001, 19 million people have come to see a once sterile pit, turned into a cradle of life containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture symbolic of human endeavour. Tim is also Executive Chairman for Eden Project International which aims to have an Eden Project on every inhabited continent by 2025.

Tim Smit KBE, Executive Chairman, Eden Project International and Executive Vice Chair and Co Founder, Eden Project
Every good story has a hero, someone willing to take risks, to overcome the impossible, to achieve the incredible! Tim will share his own adventure and how he overcame the impossible: persuading people to believe in his bold visions and to realise the true cost of doing nothing. He will reflect on how aversion to risk is ultimately killing the British spirit, and preventing us all from achieving the unachievable!

Session 1
Bringing your alumni engagement into the 21st century
Murray Lindo, Head, Wellington College Community and CEO, Wellington College Foundation; Caroline Monaghan, Radleian Society Manager, Radley College
This session explores the ‘six pillars’ of 21st century alumni engagement through the case studies of Radley and Wellington. You will hear about what they believe to be the cornerstones of a healthy symbiotic relationship between the school and its alumni, and how to build strong networks that the whole school community can contribute to and benefit from. The session will end with an interactive discussion of other schools’ perspectives on 21st century alumni engagement.
Chair: Dan Keyworth Earls
The alumni journey – what does good engagement look like?
Sara Eastwood, Alumni Officer, Concord College
In just over two years, Concord College has grown their alumni engagement to nearly 2,000 online members, regularly achieving over 400 log-ins per month and open rates of between 50-70% for their email communications. Join them to explore how they are achieving these results through targeted communications and mini communities, and what next to ensure their network remains relevant to its members.
Chair: Kate Jillings Henley
A new development office – highs, hurdles and hindsights
Rachel Hadley-Leonard, Foundation Development Director, Princethorpe College; Julia Hodgkins, Director of Development, Godolphin and Latymer School
Rachel will explore some of the highs and hurdles of navigating her way through establishing a new development office, and her solutions to overcoming the challenges she faced along the way. Whilst Julia, new to development herself, inherited an existing fundraising department, and will share her insights and hindsights from starting out in fundraising and how she has made her mark.
Chair: Jenny Hipwell Dukes
Juggling the external relations balls
Karen Hartshorn, Director of Development, Pangbourne College
The external relations model, bringing together development, admissions, communications and marketing, is becoming more and more popular. But, with all those portfolios you can be pulled in too many directions at once. How do you make sure each function gets the amount of time and attention it deserves? This interactive session will explore how to balance priorities, time, personnel and projects, and offer tips for effective juggling.

A shared vision – why is it necessary for fundraising success?
Keith Budge, Headmaster, Bedales Schools; Dr Jon Cox, Headmaster, Royal Grammar School, Guildford; Jesse Elzinga, Headmaster, Reading Blue Coat School; Stephen Locke, Bursar, Pate’s Grammar School
The benchmarking report demonstrates the importance of an engaged senior leadership and a single, shared vision, to a school’s fundraising success. Without a strong vision and a plan for its fulfilment, potential donors just will not give – they need to believe in your school’s story. Join our panel of senior leaders as they discuss how to ensure fundraising forms the foundation of your school strategy and how through creating a shared vision, you can potentially transform your school’s future.

Finding purpose, emotion and story in you and your fundraising
Stephen George, Director, Good Leaders
All too often to fundraise we just focus on the ‘how’ and the ‘what’ but we miss the ‘why’, the purpose, and how to connect through story. Finding purpose and honest emotion personally, in our campaigns and with our donors, can be inspirational and transformational. Stephen George will explore some of the barriers and opportunities, and how through simple and personal storytelling, you can establish an emotional connection with your school community to win their support and transform your fundraising.

Achieving one story, one brand, across multiple stakeholders
Richard Gillingwater, Managing Director, Emotional Branding
You can’t afford to tell different stories of who you are: to promote 20 different messages on an open day; create multiple sub-brands or present an array of facts within a fundraising campaign. You need to create a single brand, your own ‘emotional signature’. Why emotions? Because it’s emotions that drive our behaviours. People will support you because of how you make them feel. Make that feeling strong enough and they will give your school more money, more time and more support. So how do you build this unique bond, the one thing that connects you with everyone?
Chair: Lesley Boyd Earls
Your alumni give but parents don’t. Or your parents give but alumni don’t. How do you get all your constituencies firing at once?
Melanie Bushell, Development Director, The Portsmouth Grammar School; Simon McGrahan, Development Director, Eltham College; Katie Shama, Partner, Rux Burton Associates
Portsmouth Grammar School had great alumni support; their parent engagement campaign is now doing well too, with their last phone campaign raising nearly £200,000. Eltham College has recently completed a £8.5m campaign. The bulk of the money came from parents, affluence among older alumni not being that of the parent body today. Nonetheless, the school still found ways to achieve great results with alumni. This session will look at how these two schools achieved success and also at a wealth of other tried and tested strategies which can ensure both constituencies develop together and a comprehensive community of support is achieved.
Chair: Glen Fendley Hampton
Prologue or epilogue? Stories, societies and securing a legacy pledge
Alix Morley, Deputy Director of Development, Rugby School; Claire Routley, Consultant, Legacy Fundraising Ltd; Richard Witt, Development Director, Sedbergh School Foundation
This session will look at how stories over a lifetime will motivate our communities to pledge. Case studies will explore practical solutions for legacy campaigns (and some of the unintended consequences!) including how Sedbergh and Rugby have grown legacy commitment to 260 and 300 pledges respectively.
Chair: Jan Perrins Henley
Same school; different perspective – how can you ensure governors and development directors are on the same page?
Carol Bawden, Governor, Malvern St James Girls’ School; Amanda Scott, Director of Development,The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith; Ros Sweeting, Chair of Governors,The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith; Sophie von Maltzahn, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, University College School, Hampstead
Governors are ultimately responsible for schools’ development, but as volunteers have limited time to engage and are not fundraising experts; development directors are the experts and recognise a Board that understands development and participates in fundraising can make all the difference. How can governors and development teams work more closely together to achieve the ultimate happy ending?

GDPR – the dawn of a new era in schools’ fundraising?
Adrian Beney, Partner, More Partnership; Matthew Dear, Executive Director of Development, Oundle School; Paula Williamson, Solicitor, The Information Law Practice
The Information Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham states ‘25 May is not the end. It is the beginning.’ What does the future hold for fundraising under the new data protection legislation? Is your school GDPR-ready or are you still struggling to understand what you need to do to achieve GDPR compliance? Whatever stage of the GDPR journey you are at, join our panel of experts to ask your questions on GDPR and find out what the future holds for schools’ fundraising under the new legislation.
Chair: Louise Bennett Queens
Communicating in times of crisis – how to manage your school’s reputation when the unexpected happens
James Olley, Senior Consultant, Montfort Communications; Jeremy Pickles, Director of Development, Clifton College
Crises inevitably can and do happen…but how you communicate with your community in a crisis and during the aftermath will determine the impact on your school’s reputation. Communicating in the appropriate way across all audiences can substantially affect how your community responds, and can make the difference in protecting both your reputation and in maintaining the support of your donor base. During this interactive session learn how your school can prepare to help you deal with the unexpected and how to rebuild trust within the community.
Chair: Alison Vernon Earls
Inside out – communication strategies to engage internal audiences from the common room to the canteen
Cathy Law, Development Director, Campbell College
A strong internal community should be the starting point of any successful development strategy. Making connections across teaching and non-teaching staff through a shared vision and building a sense of togetherness is vital before engaging in any external stakeholder activity. This session will look at ways to engage different staffing groups as part of your wider development strategy. Getting everyone on board and keeping everyone happy is no easy task and this session aims to give an honest overview looking at ten tactics that were undertaken with varying degrees of success!
Chair: Peter Anderson Hampton
Beyond mere bricks and mortar – framing a capital campaign for success
Susie Baker, Director of the Waynflete Office, Magdalen College School; Michael Joyce, Executive Director, Sevenoaks School Foundation
Michael Joyce and Susie Baker will explore how strategy, impact and storytelling come together when framing a successful capital campaign. Michael led the work to plan and execute Sevenoaks’ £15 million Horizon 2020 campaign. In contrast, since joining Magdalen College School in 2015, Susie has closed a rapid £3 million campaign for a new sixth-form centre. In conversation with Marc Whitmore, Michael and Susie will discuss their approaches, the critical role of donors in addition to governors and heads, and how effective storytelling engages and connects the whole school community.

It’s not just the size of your network – it’s the interaction that matters!
Simon Jones, Director of Development, The Manchester Grammar School; Chris Marshall, President, Graduway
Alumni networks are an invaluable resource, not only do they know your institution well, but they are a pool of talent, information and potential financial support. This session reviews examples from established alumni relations programmes around the world. Discussion topics include: the latest trends in technology; the use of business, mentoring and career programmes; events; overseas engagement; and how you can effectively integrate alumni relations and development.

Good asking – the role of research in efficient, effective and enjoyable fundraising
Dr Beth Breeze, Director, Centre for Philanthropy, University of Kent; Daniel Fluskey, Head of Policy and External Affairs, Institute of Fundraising
Why do fundraisers carry out prospect research on potential donors? How can we reassure our school communities, of the importance of this research to fundraising? And what impact does GDPR have on what research we can (or can’t) do? Join Dr Beth Breeze and Daniel Fluskey to find out how we can increase understanding of fundraising techniques, follow best practice and ensure that we are all engaged in ‘Good Asking’.
Chair: Chris Aucken Queens
Making the most of the middle – how to grow income from your mid-level donors
Charly White, Coach and Trainer, Vivid Leadership
Increasingly fundraisers are realising that there is a gap between the direct marketing experience offered to individual giving donors and the tailored, one to one approach taken with major donors. What experience do we give those donors who fall between this gap? You will learn how to apply both individual giving and major giving techniques into a coherent, cost effective mid-value programme – come and find out how to combine the best of both worlds.
Chair: Melanie Bushell Hampton
Making the ask – how to ensure donors are at the heart of your story
Jo Ballantine, Director of Development, The Royal Latin School; Mark Coote, Director of Development, Christ Church Oxford; Rachael Henshilwood, Director of Development, Eton College
‘Once upon a time’ is how every good fundraising ask begins – we paint a picture of why we need a donor’s support, the difference that they could make to the school, and how we can’t achieve our happy ending without them. But where is the donor in this story? Hear from experienced development directors on their experience of making the ask, what has worked, what they have learnt when things haven’t gone quite according to plan, and the importance of the donor experience to your fundraising story.

Telling your story on a shoestring – finding compelling ways to engage your school community that cost next to nothing!
Stephen Locke, Bursar, Pate’s Grammar School; Shirley Park, Development Officer, Pate’s Grammar School
With constant cuts to school budgets, it can be difficult to justify spending money on communications or events for your school community – even if the ultimate aim is to raise further funds for the school. But engaging with your school community doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Hear from Pate’s Grammar School how a smaller budget can lead to greater innovation!

New to the IDPE Annual Conference?Tips for first-time delegates
We want you to really enjoy your first IDPE conference. The presentations, panel sessions and forums, along with numerous networking opportunities, will provide you with the information and support you need to develop your confidence in schools’ development and enhance your career.
We hope that the tips below will be helpful, but if at any time during the conference you have a question, however small, please head to the conference registration desk where the IDPE team will be delighted to help you.
Recognising who is whoYou will notice that there is a blue sticker on your name badge, indicating that this is your first IDPE conference. This will help you distinguish other ‘first-timers’ and also enable others to recognise someone who may need a little help.
IDPE staff are easily identifiable by their orange lanyards, and IDPE trustees and regional vice presidents are indicated as such on their name badges.
Finding your feet and making new contactsThere are two networking opportunities specifically for first-time delegates, which will enable you to ask questions and find out how you can make the most of your conference experience. Join us at the IDPE stand in the exhibition hall, on Monday morning, to meet IDPE staff, volunteers and other first-time delegates.
You will be surrounded by people just like you who are experiencing the same challenges. The people you meet during the conference could well form a vital support network for you in the coming years.
Planning your time effectivelyThe quick session planner on the back page of the programme allows you to plan your time effectively and highlight those sessions you wish to attend.
Please remember that the streams are there as a guide only. They indicate the main focus of the session, or the target audience, but you are very welcome to attend sessions within any stream.
Making the most of our new programmeThis year’s programme focusses on increasing opportunities for delegates to network and learn from each other. Presentations and panel sessions from our experienced speakers will focus on providing practical tips that you can take away to create change within your school.
Don’t be afraid to catch up with a speaker after a session if you’d like to discuss a specific issue in more depth or ask their opinion on how you can apply their suggestions to your school.
Having your fundraising and GDPR questions answeredWe will be holding the first-ever fundraising clinic on Monday. Make an appointment at the conference registration desk to meet with an experienced Development Director who will be able to answer your fundraising questions.
Don’t forget to get your GDPR questions answered at our GDPR genius bar at the IDPE stand in the exhibition hall. We will be on hand to answer your questions during Monday lunchtime, Monday afternoon tea break and Tuesday morning coffee break.
We would like to thank ISBA for their support in developing ‘GDPR: A Practical Guide for Schools’.
Meeting the exhibitors If you are looking for a new supplier or are simply wishing to make new contacts, do make time to visit our exhibitors who are some of the leading suppliers to the sector. The conference is an opportunity to tap in to their expertise, make preliminary enquiries or firm up an initial meeting.
