At last the Social Centre we have been dreamingof has become a reality! The venue of 31 AmishavStreet. Tel Aviv, is Ideal for a Southern African andEnglish-speaking meeting ground.

Some 70 of us are already eagerly learningH e b r e w w i t h t h r e e w o n d e r f u l t e a c h e r s r e c o mmended by the Ministry of Education and the Tel AvivMunicipality. We are also tripping the light fantasticon Wednesday evenings under the guidance of Zig-gy Sobel, an American expert in Israeli Folk Dancing.

On a more elevated plane we plan hugim for Yogaand Bible studies and Bridge and a varied series ofl e c t u r e s f o r t h e i n t e l l e c t u a l s .

To quench the thirst of those with "wander lust" wehave tiyulim with geographic explanations of sites.

Last, but certainly not least, we have taken theyounger generation into account with ballet, judo ande x t r a l e s s o n s .

We hope to raise funds to buy equipment formusic and film evenings and to establish a library.

We anticipate that the Centre will buzz with activityover the haggim as we plan to celebrate all our Holidays at the Centre,

Religious services will be conducted in the S.A f r i c a n t r a d i t i o n i f t h e d e m a n d e x i s t s . A S o u t hAfrican rabbi is available to conduct the services.

Whilst not wishing to create a concept of a "land-manschaft", we know that there is a need for a placewhere S. African and English-speaking olim can gettogether and also provide a venue where combinedfunctions can be held with Israeli groups.

Ivan Israel, a lawyer from Cape Town, who cameon aliya with tils family a year ago, and his wife Raiza,wi l l look after the Centre and run a kiosk on thepremises.

The Management Committee of the TELFEDSOCIAL CENTRE consists of Louis Gecelter andAnnette Milliner, representing Telfed Executive, andTelfed staff members Sid Shapiro. Robby Damelina n d T h e l m a W a i n e r .

The success of our Centre will depend on yourreaction and participation. We are open to any suggest ions 'as , a f te r a l l . the Cent re w i l l serve as anucleus for ideas and the happy klita of new olim andalso for our vatikim. who can certainly contribute withtheir experience.

Netanya's regional newsletter again makes its appearance. Lecture evenings have been arranged —Dr Bonner of Hofit gave a lecture on The ArtificialKidney Machine' — its application and developmentin Israel, and an army officer spoke on 'Education inthe Army'.

Many members of Netanya and adjoining regionshave been more active than ever in their voluntaryand social work.

The remaining friends were Israelis or olim whohave been in Israel more than 8 years.

Big thank you to all those who assisted In preparations and catering, especially Jeff Kruger, Cynthiaand Jessel Mendelsohn, Morris Bortz, the Levius's,Ethel Schwartz and Telfed who are sponsoring theproject. Our p.J. was Mickey from Shiga'onHamuslka and lighting effects were kindly suppliedby Ya'acov of Telecon, Netanya.

The Initial and prime motivating factor In formingthe Coffee Club for youth (approx. 18 to 30 years) isHevrati — assisting young people, especially olimhadashim, in getting to know other young people andIsraelis in particular. A keen and active nucleus hasalready formed a committee to organise future functions and set the pace. Other get-togethers will havebeen held by the tl,me you read this — a 'Cheez "nVine' party (for Shavuot) and a 'RUMMICUB' evening.

All youth are most welcome to our functions. Forqueries, please raise telephone to either Shelley (dav054-38444 x 424) or Jeff (day 053-22739) orCynthia 053-30066.

During the past years, the works by Israeli emissaries have been successful. They bring up-to-dateinformation which enthuses community and campaign alike. The advent of Project Renewal has offered Diaspora Jewry real opportunity of partnershipin their chosen neighbourhoods in Israel. An activeadvisory committee from S.A. visits Israel at leasttwice yearly to participate in the planning andimplementation of projects in its areas of Bucharimand the more recently acquired Ofakim. Very realprogress is now being made.

An active Missions Programme encourages campaigners to visit Israel. The Diamond Jubilee Mission represents in microcosm everything lUAstands for. The educat ion of the Jews about thei rheritage, taking them step by step from theemotional and traumatic period of the holocaust InEurope to the success story wtiich is Israel Today, thereby showing every participating Jew that he is indeed a link in the chain of interaction between Israeland South Africa.

All these connected with lUA both in Israel atKeren Hayesod and in S.A. are propelled by the fervent belief in the words of lUA Director General,Adam B Kahan; "We are the guardians of our present and our children's future. Israel is the guaranteeof that future. What we do not do. no-one else will dof o r u s . "

The Annual Youth Hockey Tournament which, thisyear, was played according to indoor hockey rules(6-a-side), took place in Omer near Beersheva, onMay 6,1982. Participating were the vatikim teams TelAviv, Ra'anana and Netanya, as weli as the Beduinteam from Tel Sheva for whom this was their secondtournament. Teams making their debut were Omer(combined with Beersheva) and Gymnasia Herzlia ofTel Aviv.

Tournament Manager was David Zahari of Mac-cabi Tel Aviv. He was ably assistedjjy JonathanEdges, Jonathan Ariel and Leon LIpworth, all S.A.olim, and of course, former S.A. Yehuda Lewiswhose contribution to youth hockey in Israel hasbeen inspiring; without his efforts youth hockeywould never have gotten off the ground.

The tournament was divided into two leagues —the senior, up to 17-year olds (from Tel Aviv,Ra'anana. Netanya and Tel Sheva). and the 'B'teams which participated in the Beginners Tournament (Ra'anana 'B', Tel Sheva 'B', Tel Aviv 'B' plusOmer/Beersheva.) The winning team, Tel Aviv, waspresented with "The Jerusalem Post" Youth HockeyFloating Trophy. Erez Feldman (Tel Aviv) scored themost goals and the most promising player was KaidOsman, the Tel Sheva goalie.

I D E A S P O R T H E I U AI cannot think of a single instance of the lUA

I do believe, however, that we could make auseful contribution (not financial) to the Campaignand I invite readers to write in on this subject and tellus what they would do If they were Campaign Chief.UP THE CAPE!

Former Chairman of the Western Province ZionistCouncil. Ian Sacks, was a recent visitor to Telfed offices. Commenting on the relatively superior figuresof Cape aliya as compared with Transvaal aliya, hejokingly explained that, on leaving the Cape, theVoorlrekkers came across a big sign in the Hex Rivermountains reading: "Trespassers wi l l beProsecuted", and those who could read turnedb a c k .

I am indebted to J.H. and Theima Jaffe for havingsubmitted the following items:—

My 6-year old Sabra granddaughter, Nili Edelson. In Kita Aieph, came home from school one day full ofenthusiasm for a wonderful man she had learnedabout. He was good and clever and he wrote beautifulpoetry. When asked his name, Nili promptlyanswered, "Why, Na'im Nehmad Bialik, of course." !arn sure that Halm Nahman would have approved ofthis interpretation of his name. (Theima JaffeRehovot)

When asked by a friend where he was going tospend his holiday, the reply was "I don't know it'sname in Hebrew, but in English it's called "The BlackBoy," No prizes for the solution! (J.H. Rimon)
