    IPv6 on Mobile 3G/4G Friendly User Trial

  • This service is provided by Telenet on a Trial basis. This means the user might encounter problems during its use. There is no service level agreement for the specific service and the user might encounter poorer quality than usual. Telenet reserves the right to refuse/suspend IPv6 access to the service without prior notification. To participate, the customer has to manually reconfigure its APN profile, which is explained in the next slides. The helpdesk will be unable to assist when the smartphone is configured with an IPv6 profile until weve officially launched IPv6 for our Mobile service offering.

  • How to participate?

    4

  • Opt-In: reconfigure profile Smartphones are delivered with provider APN settings embedded

    in the firmware.

    Currently, all production phones contain IPv4 settings for Telenets

    Mobile APN.

    In order to conduct a friendly user test, the subscriber needs to

    manually add/reconfigure APN settings on the smartphone

    When the trial period is finished (and successful), Telenet will

    request with phone vendors to reconfigure IP-protocol of the

    Telenet APN and change it to IPv6 by default.

  • Dependency: smartphones Android

    Version 4.4 and onwards (4.4 , 5.0.X , 5.1.X , )

    Windows Phone 8.1

    At least Windows Phone version 8.1 with GDR1 applied

    Apple

    Configuring the APN is not functionality thats exposed to the end-user.

    Therefore we are testing the IOS9 release internally in order to

    support IPv6-only.

    Client side translation CLAT

    Statefull NAT64 (RFC6146)

    Provider side translation PLAT

    DNS64 (RFC6147)

    When the FQDN does not have a AAAA record, the DNS64 dynamically creates

    one that allows the client to use IPv6 and the network translates from IPv6 to

    IPv4 at the NAT64.

    464 XLAT (RFC6877)

    Prefix64 Discovery (RFC7050)

    Queries for the well-known FQDN ipv4only.arpa, which is by definition IPv4-only.

    If an AAAA response is provided, then its known that a DNS64 is in place. 14

    Building blocks

  • 1. End-to-end IPv6

    Google, Youtube, Facebook, Wikipedia, no NAT is needed

    IPv6 -> IPv6

    2. Application supports IPv6 (e.g. web browser) but the server is IPv4-only

    DNS64 spoofs an AAAA record, and the IPv6 destination routes to NAT64

    NAT64 translates IPv6 into IPv4

    IPv6 -> IPv4

    3. Application does not support IPv6 (Skype, Whatsapp,)

    The client discovers the NAT64 prefix using DNS

    The client must provide a stateless NAT46 to the application (CLAT daemon)

    The NAT64 translates IPv6 into IPv4

    IPv4 -> IPv6 -> IPv4
