REGULATORY AGENCY COMPLIANCE
This equipment complies with the requirements in Part 15 of FCC Rules for a Class A computing device. Operation
of this equipment in a residential area may cause unacceptable interference to radio and television reception, requir-
ing the operator to take whatever steps are necessary to correct the interference. Telect shielded cables should be usedwith this unit to ensure compliance with the Class A limits.
This equipment is listed to UL 60950, Third Edition; EN60950:1992; EN55022, Class A, 1994; and EN50082-1,
1991 (EN61000-4-2, EN61000-4-3, EN61000-4-4), following the provisions of the EMC directive 89/336/EEC and
the Low Voltage directive 73/23/EEC.
WARRANTY AND LIABILITY
Limited Two Year Depot Warranty (Except Where Prohibited By Law)
All Telect, Inc. MIX 28 products are warranted to be free of defects in material and workmanship under normal use
for two years after the original purchase by the end user. The purchase date shall be assumed to be the latest of the
following:
The date the product was shipped from Telect;
The date indicated on the returned warranty postcard, provided that the postcard is returned within 90 days of the
ship date; or
The date indicated on a photocopy of a sales receipt from either Telect or an authorized Telect distributor.
Telects responsibility is limited to depot repair, refurbishment, or replacement (at Telects discretion) of the defective
product with the same version or upgrade, or, if repair/refurbishment/replacement is not possible, a refund of the pur-
chase price. Repair parts and replacement products will be provided on an exchange basis and will be either new or
reconditioned. This limited warranty does not cover damage to the product resulting from accident, disaster, misuse,
abuse, negligence, improper maintenance, or modification or repair by other than Telect personnel.
Limited warranty service may be obtained by contacting Telects technical support department at 800-551-4567. NO
DEPOT WARRANTY SERVICE WILL BE PROVIDED UNLESS A RETURN MATERIAL AUTHORIZATION
(RMA) NUMBER HAS BEEN ISSUED AND THE PRODUCT IS SHIPPED WITH AN ENCLOSED REPAIR/RE-
PLACEMENT CARD. This limited warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied, including, but
not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Some countries do not
allow the exclusion of implied warranties, and in such a case, the above exclusion may not apply to you.

Out-of-Warranty Repairs
If the product warranty has expired or if the product does not qualify for warranty service, you will be charged a ser-
vice fee. Out-of-warranty service will be performed only after receipt of payment. Please call the Telect, Inc. sales de-
partment at 800.551.4567 to inquire about current charges. NO SERVICE WILL BE PROVIDED UNLESS A RE-
TURN MATERIAL AUTHORIZATION (RMA) NUMBER HAS BEEN ISSUED.
Limitation of Liability
Neither Telect, Inc. nor their authorized distributors/dealers shall be liable for any defect, indirect, incidental, special
or consequential damages, whether in an action in contract or tort (including negligence and strict liability), such as,
but not limited to, loss of anticipated profits or benefits resulting from the use of the product or any breach of any
warranty, even if Telect or its authorized distributors/dealers have been advised of the possibility of such damages. In
no event will Telect or their authorized distributors/dealers liability exceed the price paid for this MIX 28 product.
Some countries do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, and in such a case,
the above limitation may not apply to you.
SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT
This Software License Agreement (Agreement) between Telect, Inc. (Telect) and Licensee (Licensee) hereby
grants to Licensee a nontransferable, nonexclusive license to use the software incorporated with the Telect MIX 28
M13 Multiplexer/X-Connect system (Product) identified above, including the computer software and any associat-ed media and printed materials (Software) for its internal business purposes subject to the following terms, condi-
tions, and restrictions:
1. License
a. The license granted herein authorizes the Licensee, its authorized employees and any agents or contractors using
the Software in the performance of service for Licensee, to use the Software solely in conjunction with the operation
of the Product as specified in the Software documentation set forth in the Product users manual.
b. Neither the Software nor any part or portion thereof may be sublicensed, copied, reproduced or duplicated by any
means, or translated into machine language, without the prior express written permission of Telect, except that Lic-
ensee may make those copies of the Software necessary for nonproductive back-up purposes only. Further, Licensee
shall not compile, decompile, or reverse engineer the Software nor use the Software to develop derivative works orcommercially competitive products. Any attempts to do so shall be a breach of this Agreement.
c. Except as set forth in Section 1, use of or access to the Software in any manner by any person not employed by, or
under written contract with the Licensee is prohibited.
d. The right of the Licensee to use the Software under the terms of this Agreement shall commence on the date of pur-
chase of Product by Licensee and shall continue perpetually, provided Licensee complies with the terms and condi-
tions of this Agreement.
2. Title
The Software, enhancements, revisions, updates, upgrades, modifications, and derivative works thereto, custom pro-
gramming, and all other items delivered by Telect under this Agreement, and all copyright, patent, and other intellec-
tual property rights therein: (i) are owned or licensed by and are proprietary to Telect or its licensors and (ii) consti-
tute commercially valuable trade secrets of Telect or its licensors.
3. Warranty
Telect represents and warrants to Licensee that, during warranty period for Product, the Software will perform sub-
stantially in accordance with the accompanying documentation and further warrants that the media, as originally de-
livered, shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship.

Limitation of Warranty
a. Telect does not warrant that the Software will be uninterrupted or error-free in all circumstances. Licensees sole
and exclusive remedy for breach of the warranty is that Telect will make a reasonable effort to correct any document-
ed nonconformity reported in writing to Telect during the Product warranty period.
b. Telect is not responsible for any defect or noncompliance Software documentation not reported during the Product
warranty period or any defect or noncompliance Software documentation after the Software has been modified with-
out the consent of Telect, or otherwise misused, or damaged.
EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY SET FORTH IN THIS SECTION, AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED
BY APPLICABLE LAWS, TELECT SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY TO LICENSEE OR ANY THIRD PARTY
FOR THE SOFTWARE OR PROVISIONS OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES UNDER THIS
AGREEMENT, INCLUDING ANY LIABILITY FOR NEGLIGENCE; TELECT MAKES AND LICENSEE RE-
CEIVES NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY, OR IN ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS
AGREEMENT OR IN ANY OTHER COMMUNICATION; AND TELECT SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY
WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NONIN-
FRINGEMENT.
4. Protection of Proprietary Rights
Licensee acknowledges that the Software contains information that is proprietary to Telect or its licensors, and that all
such information is of a confidential trade secret nature. Licensee will take all necessary steps to protect such propri-
etary rights and to maintain the confidentiality thereof, and agrees not to disclose any information regarding the Soft-
ware to any third party except Licensees employees, agents and contractors who have a need to know and who are
bound in writing to preserve the confidentiality thereof. Licensee agrees that its contractors shall have access to the
Software only at Licensees location. Licensee further agrees that its contractors shall be deemed agents of Licensee
and therefore Licensee shall have the same liability for its contractors as Licensee has for its employees and agents.
Licensee will promptly notify Telect of any unauthorized use of the Software. Each partys obligations with respect to
confidentiality shall survive the termination of this Agreement. Each partys confidential information shall not in-
clude information that: (a) is or becomes a part of the public domain through no act or omission of the other party; (b)
was in the other partys lawful possession prior to the disclosure and had not been obtained by the other party either
directly or indirectly from the disclosing party; (c) is lawfully disclosed to the other party by a third party without re-striction on disclosure; or (d) is independently developed by the other party without breaching any confidentiality ob-
ligations.
5. Limitation of Liability; Exclusion of Consequential Damages
The maximum cumulative liability of Telect to Licensee for all claims relating to the Software and any Services ren-
dered hereunder, in warranty, contract, tort, or otherwise, shall not exceed the total amount of the price paid for Prod-
uct by Licensee.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT, UNDER THIS SECTION
OR OTHERWISE, SHALL TELECT BE LIABLE TO LICENSEE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDI-
RECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAG-
ES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION,
OR ANY OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS) ARISING OUT OF USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE SOFTWARE OR
TELECTS FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES, EVEN IF TELECT HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE
POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THIS EXCLUSION AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY APPLIES IN ALL
STATES/JURISDICTIONS WHERE PERMITTED BY LAW.
The foregoing limitation of liability and exclusion of certain damages shall apply regardless of the success or effec-
tiveness of other remedies.

6. Indemnification
If a third party claims that the Software infringes any valid U.S. patent issued as of the effective date of this agree-
ment or copyright, Telect will (as long as Licensee is not in default under this Agreement or any other agreement with
Telect) defend Licensee against such claim at Telects expense and pay all damages that a court finally awards, pro-
vided that (a) Licensee promptly notifies Telect in writing of the claim, and (b) allows Telect to control, and cooper-
ates with Telect in, the defense or any related settlement negotiations. If such a claim is made or appears possible,
Telect may, at its option, secure for Licensee the right to continue to use the Software, modify or replace the Software
so it is noninfringing, or, if neither of the foregoing options is reasonably available in Telects judgment, terminate
this Agreement and provide to Licensee a pro rata refund of the Product purchase price depreciated on a straight-line
basis over a five-year period. However, Telect has no obligation for any claim based on a modified version of the
Software or its combination, operation, or use with any product, data or apparatus not provided by Telect. THIS
PARAGRAPH STATES TELECTS ENTIRE OBLIGATION TO LICENSEE AND LICENSEES SOLE AND EX-
CLUSIVE REMEDY WITH RESPECT TO ANY CLAIM OF INFRINGEMENT.
7. General
Assignment. Licensee may not assign this Agreement or any of its rights or obligations or sublease, sublicense or oth-
erwise transfer the Software without Telects express prior written consent.
Severability. If any of the provisions of this Agreement shall be invalid or unenforceable, such invalidity or unen-
forceability shall not invalidate or render unenforceable the entire Agreement. The entire Agreement shall be con-
strued as if not containing the particular invalid or unenforceable provision or provisions, and the rights and obliga-
tions of Telect and Licensee shall be construed and enforced accordingly.
Export Administration. Licensee agrees to comply fully with all applicable export laws and regulations of the United
States to assure that neither the Software nor any direct product thereof are (a) exported, directly or indirectly, in vio-
lation of export laws; or (b) intended to be used for any purposes prohibited by export laws.
Governing Law. This Agreement and any disputes or matters arising under, in connection with, or relating to this
Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the substantive laws of the United States and the
State of Washington, without giving effect to the principles of conflict or choice of law of such state.
Venue and Jurisdiction. The state and federal courts in the State of Washington shall have exclusive venue and juris-
diction for such disputes, and the parties hereby submit to personal jurisdiction in such courts.
Section Headings. The section headings used in this Agreement have been inserted for convenience only, and shall
not be deemed to limit or otherwise affect the construction of any provision hereof.

Telects Multiplexer with Integrated X-connect for 28 DS1 Circuits or
MIX 28 for short consists of 28 DSX circuits and up to two M13 multi-
plexer cards in a 1RU chassis. MIX 28 fits standard 19- and 23-in. racks.
Each M13 multiplexer card provides interface circuits for converting 28
DS1 low-speed signals1 into a single DS3 high-speed signal. One of the
M13 cards serves as the active card while the other optional card serves as
its standby. Both cards reside horizontally in a card cage accessed via a
door on the front of the MIX 28 chassis. The two cards are in constant com-
munication and replicate all software and hardware functions. All configu-
ration changes made to the active card are also automatically made to the
standby card.
DS1 circuits are either wire wrapped at a pin field on the front of the
MIX 28 chassis or connected at 64-pin Amphenol-style connectors on the
rear. Next to the pin field on the front is the DS1 jack field for 3-port patch-
ing and monitoring.
The high-speed I/O DS3 signals are available at the BNC connectors on the
rear of the chassis.

Configuration, diagnostics, and performance monitoring are performed
through either the Ethernet port on the rear of the chassis (for remote con-
trol via Telnet using TL1 or Telects proprietary Craft interface or via
SNMP) or the RS-232 port on the front of the chassis (for local control us-
ing Telects Craft interface or TL1). In addition, C-Bit remote control of
one MIX 28 by another cross-connected MIX 28 can be done through the
DS3 interface.
In addition to the basic MIX 28 is Telects SideCaradd-on assembly.
Alongside the MIX 28, SideCar adds the capability of up to two optional
card modules for DS3 cross-connect, interconnect, or optical-electronic
conversions.

Flange Bracket Extensions: Added to the existing 19-in. flanges to adapt
to 23-in. racks. Extensions are used only on MIX 28 Systems without Side-
Car. MIX 28 with the SideCar option fits 23-in. racks only.
CRAFT Port: Female DB-9, RS-232 serial connector used for local con-trol by either Telects proprietary Craft interface or TL1.
M13 Door:Contains Status and Alarm LEDs along with the ACO Switchdescribed in the next paragraph. (See Page 1-6 for descriptions and func-
tions of status and alarm LEDs.)
ACO SW: Alarm Cut-Off Switch. When pressed and released, it turns offexternal alarms for a time period specified in the system settings screen ofthe craft interface or through SNMP. When pressed and held for three sec-
onds, it tests the LEDs on the LED panel and the M13 cards by changing
the panel LEDs to amber (except Critical and Major, which turn to red).
Testing the LEDs also sets the ACO timer. (See Page 3-1.)
DS1 Jack Field: 28, 3-Port Circuits. Used for patching and monitoring
DS1 signals.
DSX-1 Pinfield: 28 DSX-1 wire-wrap pin field. Used for routing and
cross-connecting DS1 tip and ring I/O signals.
M13 Cards: One or two of these printed circuit boards per system. Housesthe active circuitry for multiplexing functions. One card for nonredundant
systems, two cards for redundant systems. Each card has an ejector handle
at the left, as shown in the following illustration.
The function of the M13 Status LED is duplicated by the STATUS LED onthe M13 door. The Status LED conditions are as follows:

NOTE
When a MIX 28 system is operating normally, the High- and Low-Speed
LEDs on the LED panel and the active cards Status LED are all green. If
the system is redundant, the standby card LED is amber. Any LED configu-
ration other than this indicates the system is not operating normally.
Rear
Power Receptacle (20 to 60Vdc): Four-position, screw-tight terminal for
22 to 14 AWG conductors. Used to supply redundant (A, B) power.

SIDECAR OPERATOR ACCESS
The MIX 28 SideCar option is covered in detail in theMIX 28 SideCarUser Manual(Publication 128878). The SideCar option can be added to
existing MIX 28 Systems mounted in 23-in. rack.
The dual-module SideCar chassis allows addition of modules for DSI-3,
DSX-3, and/or fiber-copper conversions of DS3 I/O signals. SideCar fiber-
copper (optical-electronic) conversions require Telects Vector family of
transport modules. In addition, Telects E-Vector Module allows optical-
electronic conversion of MIX 28 Ethernet communications.
The following illustration shows a SideCar chassis with a Vector Optical
Transport Module (OTM) at the top and an E-Vector Module at the bottom.
Operator access consists of the following, shown in the illustration on
Page 1-7:
Power & Alarm Receptacle (20 to 60Vdc): Seven-position, wire-clamp-
ing terminal for 22 to 14 AWG conductors. Used to supply redundant (A,
B) power to the system and to interconnect power fail and major alarms toexternal alarm system.
Chassis Ground: Single #8-32 ground stud.
Backplane BNCs, Tracer Lamps, & Messenger Wire Jacks: The type
and purpose of the backplane assembly or the need for one depends on the
type of module(s) installed in the SideCar. The backplane assembly includ-
ed with the MIX 28 with SideCar contains the following:

plug is removed.
Messenger Wire Jack: Used to interconnect tracer signals.

Location and Space
ALERT!ALERT! This equipment is designed to permit connection of
the earth-grounded conductor of the dc supply circuit to theearth-ground terminal on the equipment. If this connect ismade, all the following conditions must be met:
The chassis ground connection must be made directly to thesame ground conductor as the dc power source ground or to aground bus system designed specifically for that purpose.
The earth ground network is limited to equipment in the im-mediate area, along with the power source.
No switching or disconnecting devices shall be installed inthe earth-grounded network
The MIX 28 chassis mounts to a standard 19-in. (483 mm) or 23-in.
(584 mm) WECO and EIA racks. A 23-in. rack installation requires the ex-
tender brackets. A 23-in. rack is required for mounting MIX 28 with a
SideCar option. A single MIX 28 requires 1.75 in. (1RU) of rack space.
Tools and Equipment
ALERT!ALERT! Only use crimping tools (such as Burndy Y8MRB-1 orequivalent) and components approved by agencies or certify-ing bodies recognized in your country or region, such as Un-derwriter's Laboratories (UL), CSA, or CE.
You need the following tools to install MIX 28:
Flathead screwdrivers: 1/8 in. to connect low-speed cables; 3/32 in. to
wire power connector
#2 Phillips-head screwdrivers to attach mounting brackets to chassis
and attach chassis to rack
3/8 in. and 11/32 in. open-end or socket wrenches (or nut drivers) to at-
tach ground lugs to studs on M28 and SideCar
Wire-wrap tool to connect DS1 conductors to pinfield

Also, you must supply 14 AWG (minimum) stranded wire for grounding
M13 panel, 18 AWG (minimum) stranded wire for grounding SideCar, and
a groundable, shielded cable for the Ethernet port.

CAUTION!CAUTION! Do not supply power until all connections are madein accordance with requirements specified in local electricalcodes.
ALERT!ALERT! Protect this equipment (MIX 28 and MIX 28 with Side-Car) with a listed/approved branch circuit breaker or fuse suffi-
ciently rated to interrupt power at either 48Vdc at 1A or 24Vdcat 2A for the MIX 28 chassis, and A for the SideCar chassis.The power distribution panel (PDU) containing the breaker orfuse must be accessible when operating a MIX 28 system.
The chassis must receive 20Vdc to 60Vdc. Since MIX 28 includes active
components, Telect recommends using a dual-feed PDU to provide input
power redundancy.

Adapting 19-in. Mounting Brackets for a 23-in. Rack
NOTES
MIX 28 Without a SideCar comes ready for mounting to a 19-in.
WECO or EIA rack. For mounting to a 19-in. rack, continue with
Mounting to the Rack on Page 2-5.
MIX 28 With a SideCar comes ready for mounting to a 23-in WECO or
EIA rack. (MIX 28 with the SideCar option can not be installed on a
19-in. rack.) For Models 747-2801-0001 and -0002, continue withMounting to the Rack on Page 2-5.
To mount a MIX 28 without the SideCar option to a 23-in. rack, attach the
23-in. WECO/EIAextension brackets to the 19-in. brackets already on the
MIX 28, as shown in the following illustration. (Notice that the fanning
strip is secured at this time when making the 19-in. to 23-in. adaptation.)

Mounting to the Rack
A single MIX 28 chassis requires 1.75 in. (1RU) of rack space. When in-
stalling multiple MIX 28, one above the other, install a 1RU heat baffle
above and below each set of four MIX 28s, as shown on Page 2-2.
1. Loosely mount the MIX 28 to the rack using the four, #12-24screws provided, as shown in the following illustrations.
2. For either a MIX 28 on a 19-in. rack
or a MIX 28 with a SideCar, install
the fanning strip bracket (provided)
by removing the two #12-24 screws
on the right, then resecuring along
with the fanning strip bracket be-
tween the chassis mounting bracket
and the head of the screw, as shown
in illustration on the right.
3. Torque all #12-24 bracket and extension screws to 35 in-lb
(4.19 Nm).
When installing a MIX 28 either on a 19-in. rack orwith the SideCar option on a 23-in. rack, first
loosely fasten the right side screws without the
fanning strip bracket.

1. Use a listed (approved) crimping tool to attach a listed (approved)
dual-hole lug (#10 holes on 5/8 in. centers) to a #14 AWG wire
(min.).
2. Clean contact area of compression lug and mating surfaces on rear
of panel. If necessary, use a coarse, non-metallic cleaning pad.
3. If required, lightly coat anti-oxidant on
lug and grounding surface of panel. Se-
cure lug to studs using KEPS nuts provid-ed, as shown in the illustration. Tighten
KEPS nuts to 26 to 28 in.-lb (2.9 to 3.1
Nm) using a 3/8 in. (or 10 mm) socket
4. Secure opposite end of ground cable to
grounded relay rack or bus according to
operating company procedures.
The neutral or grounding conductor of theac power system must
not be used for equipment grounding.

MIX 28 requires a fused power feed from a power distribution unit (PDU):
If using -48Vdc for battery power, use 24 to 14AWG fused at 1A. Con-
nect -48Vdc to -A and return to +A.
If using +24Vdc, use 22 to 14AWG fused at 2A. For BATT, connect ei-
ther +24Vdc to +A or -24Vdc to -A.
Do so in similar fashion for Feed B connections. Telect strongly recom-
mends dual feeds. Both feeds must use the same nominal voltages.
1. Make sure power is disabled at PDUbefore installing power conductors.*
2. Strip ~12 in. (~12 mm) of insulation.3. If required, lightlycoat conductors with
anti-oxidant compound.4. Back off terminal screw, insert wire,
and then screw tight. Don't overtighten.
* Power at the PDU can be disabled by removing the fuse or turning the circuit breaker off.

Installing External Alarms
Connect remote external alarm
indicator wires (solid or tinned
wires, #24 to #18 AWG) to the
wire-wrap ALARM pins on the
rear of the MIX 28.
DS1 Cabling
Route the DS1 signals through the wire-wrap pinfields on the front of the
chassis and/or through the rear 64-pin connectors.
NOTE
Internally, the wire-wrap pins on the front are connected directly to the 64-
pin connector on the rear. If you use both front and rear DS1 connections,
remember that each DS1 channel must be connected to one or the other not both.
Telect does not recommend usingboth front and rear DS1 connections on
the same MIX 28 panel.

2. Tighten the captive outboard screw on each male connector to se-
cure it to the female connectors on the chassis.
3. Secure each cable to the tie wrap anchor on the chassis using a ca-
ble tie.
NOTES
Prevent ground loopscheck the sites grounding practice standards
before attaching drain wire in the following step.
For a MIX 28 without a SideCar leave at least 2 in. (~50 mm) of slack
cabling between the tie wrap anchors on the MIX 28 and any cable an-
choring points on the rack. This allows just enough cable slack in the
event a SideCar is added at a later time.
4. If desired, connect the shield wires from the 64-pin connectors to
the #6-32 stud labeled DRAIN WIRE.

One MIX 28 circuit board is installed behind the M13 door on the front of
the panel. To install an optional, redundant M13 card, proceed as follows:
1. Open the M13 door, shown in the following illustration.
2. Align the card with the card guides and gently insert it into the
chassis by pressing the ejector handle against the card and pushing
the card back.
3. Close the M13 door.

SIDECAR INTERCONNECTIONS
Complete setup procedures for the optional MIX 28 SideCar are provided
in TelectsMIX 28 SideCar User Manual(Publication 128878).
TheMIX 28 SideCar User Manualincludes the installation of a widerange of optional Telect active and passive modules (DNI-3, DSX-3, and
Vector Optical Transport and Protect modules), rear BNC configurations,
along with grounding, power, and alarm connections.
Grounding, power, and alarm connectors are on the rear of all SideCar
chassis. Note that passive modules used without tracer lamps do not require
power.
Grounding SideCar Enclosures
You must ground each SideCar en-closure separately from the
MIX 28.

active modules. (Normally open vs normally closed states are depen-
dent on the Vector module.)
A seven-position spring terminal block is located at the rear of the SideCar
enclosure. Each position accommodates a 24 AWG to 16 AWG stranded or
solid copper wire. (Stranded wire should be tinned.)
For a -48Vdc card module, connect -48Vdc fused a A to the -A termi-nal and RTN to +A.
For a 24Vdc card module, connect either -24Vdc to the -A terminal(for -24Vdc BATT) or +24Vdc to +A (for +24Vdc BATT). Fuse theBATT feed at A.
To connect wires to spring terminal connectors, first strip about 3/8 in. (~10
mm) of insulation and then use a 1/8-in. (~3 mm) flat tipped screwdriver to
open the spring before inserting the wire. Remove the screwdriver to cinch
the wire.
Always route power and alarm cables separately from signal cables. Use
cable tie or lacing where required, in accordance with standard operating
company practices.

MODEM SETUP
If desired, setup a modem on the RS-232 port labeled CRAFT on the frontof the MIX 28.
Enabling a Modem
NOTE
Connecting a modem has the effect of disconnecting the local serial CID
interface. Serial CID control comes from a remote site through the modem
connection.
A modem will not work with the MIX 28 until the Modem Detect field
on the System Interfaces screen has been set to Enabled. See To Set
Modem Detect on Page 4-16 before beginning this procedure.
The MIX 28 modem automatically detects the baud at the MIX 28 serial
port; there is no need to set or change the rate.
1. Log in to the MIX 28. (See Logging In on Page 4-11.)
2. Access the System Interfaces screen and set the Modem Detect
field to Enabled.
3. Log out. (See Logging Out on Page 4-12.)
4. Set up the MIX 28 modem:
a. Connect the modem serial port to the MIX 28 serial port with a
null modem cable.
b. Connect the modem to a phone line.
c. Power up the modem.
5. Press and hold the ACO switch until the LED test starts (all LEDs
light), then release.
This causes an LED test and resets the ACO, as described in Test-
ing LEDs and Resetting the ACO on Page 3-1.
The MIX 28 modem is ready to communicate with a remote-site modem
when a remote modem calls in to establish a link. When the remote modem
establishes communication with the MIX 28, the user at the remote end can
log into the system. See Logging In on Page 4-11
The login screen does not appear automatically at the remote site. Press the
Enter key at the remote site to access the login screen.

Disabling a Modem
1. Log out at the remote modem.
2. Break the communication link by hanging up at the remote modem.
3. Disconnect the MIX 28 modem from the serial port.
4. Connect the MIX 28 serial port to the local PC.
5. Press and hold the ACO switch until the LED test starts, then re-
lease.
This causes an LED test and resets the ACO, as described on
Page 3-1.
6. Login to the MIX 28.
7. Access the System Interfaces screen and set the Modem Detect
field to Disabled.

3 User FunctionsTHE ALARM CUTOFF/LAMP BUTTON
Each system has an Alarm Cutoff (ACO)/Lamp Button located on the LED
panel that disables the external alarm contacts and tests the LEDs.
Disabling AlarmsTo disable the external alarm contacts, press and release the button marked
ACO SW.
The ACO LED lights and alarms are disabled for the length of time speci-
fied in the System Settings screen of the Craft interface1 or through SNMP.
Testing LEDs and Resetting the ACO
1. To test the LEDs, press and hold the button marked ACO SW forthree seconds:
All LEDs on panel, except for CRT and MAJ, change to amber;
CRT and MAJ change to red;
Active M13 card Status LED cycles between green and amberat one cycle per second;
Active STATUS LED on the M13 door is amber (no blinking)2;
and
The ACO sets.

2. This is the only time that the STATUS LED on the M13 door differs from that of the Status LED on the M13 card.

2. To end the test and return the LEDs to their previous state, release
ACO SW. Since the ACO has been activated by this test, the ACOLED stays on.
3. If you need to enable the external alarms, go to Screen 16 and dis-
engage the ACO. (See Viewing Alarms on Page 4-39.)
DSX OPERATION
DSX functions include cross-connecting circuits with other network ele-
ments, rerouting traffic with patch cords, and nonintrusive monitoring.
Patching Signals
If you need to perform network maintenance or emergency patch-arounds,
you can reroute incoming and outgoing lines by making temporary connec-
tions using either two single patch cords or a dual patch cord. Patching isservice-affecting, and the circuit is briefly interrupted while setting up and
taking down the patch.
To Patch with Two Single PatchCords
1. Insert a single patch cord into
the I (In) jack of the firstmodule.
2. Insert the other end into the
O (Out) jack of the module.
3. Insert another single patch
cord into the O (Out) jack ofthe first module.
4. Insert the other end of the patch cord into the I (In) jack of the sec-ond module.
To Patch with a Dual PatchCord

insert it into the I (In) and O (Out) ports of the second jack module.
Monitoring Signals
You can perform nonintrusive signal monitoring by connecting your circuit
monitoring device to the front monitor jack (labeled M) of the signal youwish to monitor.
MODEM OPERATION
You can connect a modem to the MIX 28 serial port to control the system
remotely over an analog phone line. To do so, you must set the Modem
Detect field on the System Interfaces screen to Enabled and install the
modem according to the instructions on Page 2-14. When you have done
so, activate the modem by pressing and holding the ACO switch until allLEDs light (LED test), then release the switch.
If you set Modem Detect to Enabled, but you have a PC rather than a mo-
dem connected to the MIX 28 serial port, the modem detect code
+++ATQ appears on the screen at the current location of the cursor when
you release the ACO switch. To clear the +++ATQ, switch to another
MIX 28 screen.
The modem automatically detects the baud at the MIX 28 serial port when
the modem is off-line. Once the modem is on-line, it will not change its
baud. If you change the MIX 28 baud (System Interfaces screen) while the
modem is on-line, you create a baud mismatch between the MIX 28 and
modem, which shuts down the connection. The only way to regain the con-
nection is to hang up at the remote modem, press the ACO switch until
the LED test starts, release the switch, and re-establish the link from the re-
mote end.
