Reception children are really settling in to school life and are enjoying the Foundation Phase environment. At the end of last week, we hosted a sports event for Ystruth Primary School, Blaenau Gwent and St. Gwladys School, Bargoed. Gilwern is working in partnership with these schools who have also been categorised as ‘Green’. We are partnered with these two schools in a exciting initiative called ‘Sustaining and Growing Excellence’ . For your own information, this newsletter will now be produced fortnightly and will still include all of the usual features. Can I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting your children in their return to school and look forward to working with you as the year unfolds. MathsLast academic year, we introduced the idea of

Mathematical Theme Weeks. This year our focus is on Numeracy across the curriculum –

using and applying the mathematical skills.Our first numeracy fortnight begins with a

focus on ‘Addition and Subtraction.’Please see attached sheet to give you

information on our Maths focus

Year 1 have been the school’s highest attenders for both weeks, with other classes following closely

behind. The LEA has set the school’s attendance target at 95.8% and as a school we have to monitor and report on attendance. Take a look to see if your

child’s class falls below the LEA target.

And finally…Parent ConsultationThis week you should have received an appointment from your child’s class teacher for a Parent Consultation. Please return the RSVP slip to confirm your attendance.Topic WebAttached to this newsletter is this half term’s topic information for your child. This provides you with information regarding your child’s learning, enabling you to ask questions and help with learning at home.If you have not received either of the above, please contact the school office.

PhotographsAt the end of last week each child would have

brought home a proof copy of their class photo. Please ensure that you return your

orders by Friday 18th September, 2015.Also this term, your child will have a

photograph of any relevant teams they belong to within school. In addition, an individual

photo will be taken prior to Christmas.

Safety ReminderPlease can glass bottles/containers be

refrained from being sent into school, with all food/drink stored in plastic containers.

Food AllergiesWe request that snacks containing nuts are to

be avoided due to medical needs of some pupils.

Lunch MoneySchool dinner money can be paid on a Monday for the week ahead or on a daily basis. Money should be in an envelope, clearly marked with

your child’s name.Dinner money envelopes can be purchased

from the school office, at a cost of £1 for 30.
