Auto Point Code Recovery

Description

The EAGLE 5 ISS detects Far-End Loopback in a link through the signaling link test control (SLTC) procedure. In this procedure, the EAGLE 5 ISS originating point code (OPC) sends a signaling link test message (SLTM) across a link to the STP and expects a signaling link test acknowledgement (SLTA) from the STP. If Far-End loopback occurs in the connecting link, the OPC receives the same SLTM instead of an SLTA. The OPC marks the link as failed as soon as it receives the SLTM.

Multiple MSUs can be returned to the OPC due to the circular route caused by the loopback. This can increase the congestion level on the link which then invokes Circular Route Detection (CRD) processing. CRD marks the link as failed and marks the destination point codes (DPCs) as CRD-prohibited, meaning that the link cannot be used until the DPC is cleared. Clearing the DPCs requires manual execution of the rst-dstn command.

The Auto Point Code Recovery feature consists of the following features:

• Enhanced Far-End Loopback Detection

• Circular Route Auto-Recovery

The Enhanced Far-End Loopback Detection and the Circular Route Auto-Recovery features can be enabled and turned on separately. However, SLTMs must be enabled (chg-slt command) before either feature can operate.

Enhanced Far-End Loopback

The Enhanced Far-End Loopback feature significantly decreases the time required to take a link out of service. When a trigger event occurs that indicates Far-End Loopback may have occurred, the EAGLE 5 ISS sends an SLTM. Normal processing takes the link out of service if the SLTM is received. The Enhanced Far-End Loopback feature fails the link as quickly as possible. This rapid failure prevents the EAGLE 5 ISS from marking DPCs as CRD-prohibited.

Circular Route Auto-Recovery Procedure

The Circular Route Detection feature automatically clears CRD when Far End Loopback is detected, and the failing link is part of the linkset that detected the circular route. Without the Circular Route Detection feature, CRD must be cleared by manually executing the rst-dstn command.

Hardware Requirements

No additional hardware requirements are required to support the Auto Point Code Recovery feature.

SCCP Loop Detection EAGLE 5 ISS 35.6 Feature Notice

SCCP Loop Detection

Description

The SCCP Loop Detection feature detects SCCP looping of UDT/XUDT and UDTS/XUDTS messages for all concerned signaling transfer points (STPs).

Normally, an STP sends GTT messages to the capability point codes of mated nodes for load sharing; however, this can result in SCCP Looping if the destination point code (DPC) is the same as the originating point code (OPC) or the point code of any intermediate in the network.

This looping can be resolved by eliminating the use of CPCs and verifying at an intermediate STP whether the OPC of the incoming MSU is the same as the true point code (TPC) of the DPC after GTT. However, CPCs are often used to implement LNP in addition to the SCCP.

The SCCP Loop Detection feature resolves the looping issue by providing a correlation between the MTP-designated point codes for all concerned STPs.

The SCCP Loop Detection feature is provisioned by configuring the Loopset Table and adding a loopset to a Global Title Translation.

The loopset commands define the correlation between MTP-designated point codes and the CPCs of the STPs that detect SCCP looping. The GTT commands allow the administration, deletion, and retrieval of loopset table entries for a particular GTT.

The SCCP Loop Detection feature operates in the Notify and Discard modes. In the Notify (default) mode, the SCCP Loop Detection feature generates a UIM when it detects SCCP looping and does not actually discard the MSU. This UIM allows the operator to capture and verify MSUs throughout the system for SCCP looping. In the Discard mode, the SCCP Loop Detection feature generates a UIM when it detects SCCP looping and discards the MSU.

Hardware Requirements

The SCCP Loop Detection feature requires DSM (4 GB) cards.

New and Enhanced Commands

The following commands or command families have been added or enhanced to support the SCCP Loop Detection feature. For complete descriptions of these commands, refer to the Commands Manual of your EAGLE 5 1SS Release 35.6 documentation set.

• ent/chg/dlt/rtrv-loopset—Added to allow entry, modification, deletion, and retrieval of data in the loopset table. Although the loopset table allows 12 point codes per loopset, the ent-loopset command can be used only to enter up to six point codes. The chg-loopset command is used to add up to six additional point codes to an existing loopset for a maximum of 12 point codes per loopset.

EAGLE 5 ISS 35.6 Feature Notice Other Changes

909-0284-001 Rev B, March 2007 FN-11

Other Changes

The following enhancements are added to the EAGLE 5 ISS for Release 35.6:

• Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity

The Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity feature adds internal data verification for messages transferred between EAGLE5 ISS cards. It increases the potential for detection of message corruption due to hardware related causes and enhances serviceability by providing alarm capability and maintenance reporting to assist with problem determination.

See “Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity” on page FN-11 for more details.

• IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming

The IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming feature provides alarm notifications in case of low level Ethernet errors or excessive SCTP retransmissions on IPLIMx and IPGWx cards.

See “IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming” on page FN-15 for more details.

• EAGLE OA&M IP Security Enhancements SSHv2 Upgrade

The EAGLE OA&M IP Security Enhancements SSHv2 Upgrade feature upgrades the Secure Shell product OpenSSH from version 3.0.2 to version 4.2 to incorporate security improvements.

See “EAGLE OA&M IP Security Enhancements SSHv2 Upgrade” on page FN-19 for more details.

Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity

The Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity feature enhances the ability of the EAGLE5 ISS to detect message corruption by performing integrity checks on messages transferred between cards. The integrity checks consist of checksum validations performed on a limited subset of MSU traffic transferred between LIM cards and between LIM and SCCP cards.

The feature adds a Run-Time Diagnostic alarm device to provide notification of message validation failures detected during the integrity checks. Additionally, a UIM will be generated when an EAGLE 5 ISS card detects an internal validation failure in a message transferred from another card.

New Commands

The rept-stat-rtd command reports the status of internal integrity checks and Run-Time Diagnostics (RTD) for Eagle cards. The report includes the message validation statistics from the internal integrity checks performed on Eagle cards and the status of the RTD subsystem and alarms. For a complete description of this command, refer to the Commands Manual of your EAGLE 5 ISS Release 35.6 documentation set.

Measurements

The Eagle Inter-card Message Integrity feature adds the MSULOST6 measurement register. This register represents the total number of MSUs received from other EAGLE 5 ISS cards that were discarded due to checksum failure during internal integrity checks.

The MSULOST6 measurement register is added to the following reports:

• systot-stp

• mtcd/mtcdth-stp

Limitations

The Inter-card Message Integrity Feature has the following limitations:

• The integrity checks are not supported on 2-port Low Speed LIM cards.

• The rate of validations performed during the integrity checks is determined by the rate of MSU traffic between individual cards, therefore, the time to detect validation errors varies.

• The integrity checks are only performed on cards that are in-service.

• Validation statistics reported by the rept-stat-rtd command are dynamic and are not maintained when a card is re-initialized. The individual statistics re-start at zero after the maximum values are reached.

• The EILA, ILA, LIM-E1, LIM-DS0, LIM-OCU, and LIM-V35 cards are not supported by the Inter-card Message Integrity Feature.

IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming

The IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming feature provides alarm notifications in case of low level Ethernet errors or excessive SCTP retransmissions on IPLIMx and IPGWx cards.

The IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming feature adds an alarm to the IP Connection device to indicate an excessive retransmission rate. This device includes both TALI sockets and SCTP associations. However, the alarm is provided only for SCTP associations.

The IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming feature also adds an alarm to the physical Ethernet device to indicate unexpected errors in the physical layer.

New or Enhanced Commands

The following commands or command families are added or enhanced to support the IP7 Ethernet and SCTP Alarming feature. For complete descriptions of these commands, refer to the Commands Manual of your EAGLE 5 ISS Release 35.6 documentation set.

A critical situation is defined as an EAGLE 5 ISS problem that severely affects service, traffic, or maintenance capabilities, and requires immediate corrective action. Critical problems affect service or system operation, resulting in:

• Failure in the system that prevents transaction processing

• Reduction in system capacity or in system traffic-handling capability

• Inability to restart the system

• Corruption of the database

• Inability to perform maintenance or recovery operations

• Inability to provide any required critical or major trouble notification

Any other problem severely affecting service, capacity, traffic, and billing. Maintenance capabilities may be defined as critical by prior discussion and agreement with the Customer Care Center.
