Do you love timber and want to pursue a career in the field? This programme will give you the knowledge and skills you need to manufacture, specify or sell timber products, working in anything from a small workshop to a large company. Programme Description This degree can lead to a range of careers in the timber-related sectors of the furniture and construction industries, including furniture manufacturer, joiner, operations or drawing office manager in a timber factory, timber specifier and timber consultant. No previous experience with timber is required. In Year 1, you’ll gain craft skills by using hand tools and machines to make a variety of objects, and learn how to represent these in hand and computer drawings. You’ll also learn about different types of timber, timber products, the timber industry and workshop safety, and will improve your maths, communication and writing skills. In Year 2, you’ll develop your craft skills further using a wider variety of tools, machines, jigs and CNC, culminating in the production of several high-quality products. You’ll learn about furniture and joinery design and finishing, will further your maths and CAD skills, and learn to estimate costs and tender for work. In Year 3, you’ll further develop skills in furniture, kitchen and joinery manufacture while learning more about the business and law of timber product manufacture, production management and design for manufacture. Further Study If you attain the appropriate level in your final examinations, you may progress to related Level 8 programmes. The most common progression route is by advanced entry into Year 3 of our BA in Interior Design (furniture design strand), a four-year, Level 8 programme. Other progression routes may be possible into product design, production management and a range of business degrees in TU Dublin.
