Welcome to the Department of Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical Administration (DPPA)

Pharmaceuticals are indispensable to healthcare systems, as they reduce morbidity and

mortality rates and enhance patients' quality of life. However, in order to have effective and

efficient use of pharmaceuticals, it is necessary to have access to high-quality, safe, available

and affordable medicines. This is why access to health cares and essential medicines is

increasingly being viewed as a fundamental human right.

Development and diffusion of high technique and expensive health technologies in past

decades has raised serious concerns about fair accessibility of high-quality, safe and affordable

medicines. It is estimated that around 2 billion people (one third of the global population) do

not have regular access to essential medicines. This proportion in some low income countries is‐

increased to one half of the population.

Availability of experts in the fields of pharmacoeconomics and pharmaceutical Administration is

of the key parameters for monitoring, evaluating and reporting the performance of healthcare

systems in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and equity of their services. The DPPA was

developed in summer 2008 in response to this need. The aim of DPPA is to offer high-quality

education in the fields of pharmacoeconomics and pharmaceutical Administration at PhD level.

Message of the Head of the Department

Welcome to the DPPA. Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical Administration are growing

sharply and have become key components of pharmaceutical policy making and administration,

worldwide. In DPPA, as one of the pioneer Pharmacoeconomics departments in Iran, we offer a

great diversity of knowledge and expertise in both Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical

Administration. In DPPA we offer a broad range of taught courses including Micro and

Macroeconomics, Health Economics, Econometrics, Methods of Economic Evaluation,

Pharmacoeconomics Modeling, innovation management, strategic management, and supply

chain management. We also offer some short course trainings in various management and

applied economics sciences for industrial managers (for example MBA course in pharmaceutical

Administration).

The research interests of DPPA staff encompass a wide range of subjects such as economic

evaluation, outcome measurement, equity, regulation evaluation, health and pharmaceutical

policy evaluation and pharmaceutical Administration.

We hope this move could be efficient in optimum resource management in our country.

About the Department

DPPA was established in 2008 to promote the science of management, economics and policy

making in different aspects of pharmacy, based on research and academic education. This

department is devoted to empirical research and methodological developments in the field of

pharmacoeconomics, pharmaceutical Administration and health policy. Our research focus is on

economic evaluation, health technology assessment, Pharmacoepidemiology, pharmaceutical

systems, management, and policy analysis.

According to the definition of health system (WHO 2000):

"…all the activities whose primary purpose is to promote, restore or maintain health.…" DPPA

could have an important role to help health and pharmaceutical policy makers in achieving this

objective more clearly. Likewise DPPA could help policy makers to attain other goals of health

system, such as efficient responsiveness, and fair financial contribution more successfully.
