The Course

The TEFL course is designed for both experienced and inexperienced teachers. No second language or previous teaching experience is required. The course is intense (yet extremely engaging and fun) so be prepared to take good notes, attend all sessions, follow instructions, and stay organized. You will have access to all the materials needed in order to deliver successful lessons. After our intensive 4-week 120-hour course you will be ready to begin teaching immediately. The course features classroom sessions on teaching methodology, grammar, and most importantly 8-10 hours of teaching practice. You will have the opportunity to teach classes and one-on-one lessons with friendly and motivated students of all levels. Teaching practice takes place a few hours a day throughout the week and allows trainees to work cooperatively in a supportive atmosphere with valuable feedback from your trainers at the end of each lesson. You will be able to track your progress throughout the course, and at the end of 4 weeks, you will be ready for your first teaching job!

Course Schedule You’ll be in school Monday - Friday from 10:00 until 18:30 during the first 2 weeks. Inputs are offered in the morning, and teaching practice takes place in the afternoon. There are breaks after each session and a 1-hour lunch. During weeks 3 and 4, you will finish at 13:30 twice a week so that you have time for lesson planning and completion of additional assignments. The school is open from 9-19:00 so you have plenty of time to utilize our resources (i.e. copy machines, library, computers, school supplies, etc.).

Prague, Czech Republic

TEFL Worldwide is located in the historic and vibrant capital of the Czech Republic, Prague: an ideal place for TEFL training and/or teaching. Prague is renowned for its magical charm and remarkable blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance architecture. It’s a very cosmopolitan city. There’s something for everyone including art, music, outdoor markets, the riverbank, theater, museums, and many pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants. There are always numerous festivals and events taking place throughout the city. Prague has a huge expat community which makes it easy to find friends who are experiencing the same transition. The city is situated in the very heart of Europe allowing easy access to numerous other major European cities like Berlin, Munich, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Bratislava, as well as the Austrian and German Alps. Best of all, the cost of living is amongst the lowest in Europe. In addition, it’s easy to book a budget flight, train, or bus and travel all throughout Europe during weekends. Prague has an extremely affordable, safe, clean, and efficient public transportation system making it very easy to get around Prague and the entire Czech Republic without ever needing a car.

Safety The Czech Republic ranks as the 6th safest country in the world. There is very little violent crime in Prague. You’ll see children from the age of 6 taking public transportation to school alone. Women comment that they feel very safe here. As anywhere though, use common sense when out and about. Nobody should be out alone in the middle of the night anywhere in the world.

Salaries In general, English teachers make enough to live a comfortable lifestyle and will have enough to pay for all their living expenses with some extra money for entertainment and light travel in almost any country that they work in. In some Asian countries like South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, and parts of the Middle East, teachers can end up saving a significant amount of their income. Many go to these regions in order to pay off student loans and any bills. Don’t look at the salary until you compare it directly to the cost of living in that particular country. The more you go off the beaten path, the more benefits there are so don’t be afraid to explore countries you may have never considered.

How Long are Contracts?

Most employers would prefer that you sign a contract for one year. Some are flexible as long as you finish the school year. For example, many school years runs from September until June. You might take our January course and start a job in February. The employer would expect you to at least finish up the school year and work until June. It really depends, but it’s quite common for teachers to just finish up the school year and then decide if they are going to stay or move on to another country. Contracts are renewable.

Teaching positions really come about all throughout the year. That's because a language school might acquire new business in, say, October. For instance, Coca Cola may say "we want you to supply us with 10 teachers for the next 2 years, beginning in October." so the language school will need to find teachers for this new business. That's why there are always teaching positions available wherever you go. Another reason why there are so many openings is because teachers move abroad, teach for a semester, a year, or a few years and then return home which then opens more positions.

What Kind of Positions are There for Teaching English? There are many different teaching options to choose from. Positions vary from school to school. You can be teaching English to all ages and levels at a language school, or you may be teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). ESP includes courses like Business English, Medical English, Aviation English, Legal English, or English for Young Learners. Many language schools worldwide have contracts with large multinational companies so our graduates go on to teach in places like Coca Cola, Citibank, IBM, DHL, and many others! If you have any experience in a specific industry, you can look into teaching English for that industry.

Another option is teaching for English preschools, kindergartens, primary, secondary and high schools. There is a very high demand for teaching children.

Many of our TEFL graduates take on jobs with a private language school, and after they get their schedule sorted, they choose to teach English privately, in person on the side. This is a fantastic way to supplement your income.

Another excellent way to supplement your income is by teaching English online! There’s a huge demand for teaching English online. Several TEFL Worldwide graduates are doing this from all over the world and earning a very good income; especially those that live in countries with a low cost of living. This is a great option if you want to continue to travel while earning income!

Depending on your experience and credentials, it’s also possible to teach English in colleges and universities.

Working Visas and Permits

The process for obtaining a working visa and/or permit or trade license varies significantly from country to country. Oftentimes, employers will sponsor their teachers allowing them to get a work permit and visa. In some countries, like Germany and the Czech Republic, you can get a Trade License and Business Visa allowing you to freelance. If you’d like to stay and teach in the Czech Republic, we can put you in touch with agencies that will facilitate this process. During the course, we offer an informational session where you can ask a visa representative questions about the process and learn all the steps necessary.

Canadians and New Zealand residents can apply for a Youth Mobility Visa or Working Holiday Visa to work in the Czech Republic which is cheaper and easier. Check with the nearest Czech Embassy for these details.

Non-EU citizens can work in most Central/Eastern European countries as well as Germany. For other Western European countries, you may be hired, but the schools will most likely not be able to sponsor you for the work permit and visa due to the regulations and cost. You can, however, enroll in language courses as a student and obtain a student visa, but you are not allowed to work. Check with the appropriate Embassy for this information.
