“While the majority of telecommunicators are now female,
they remain underrepresented in technology careers” (Silverman &
Pritchard as cited in Farmer, 2008, p. introduction).
According to Orenstein and Pipher , “girls tend to increase their self-
consciousness and lose their self-esteem, particularly because they
are more conscious of peer and societal expectations about
increasingly rigid body images and behaviors” (as cited in Farmer,
2008, p. 8).
“Girls enjoy school more and work harder than boys. As a result, girls tend to get higher grades in school” (Black,
Philbin & Meier as cited in Farmer,
2008, p. 9).
“Because girls tend not to play with spatially manipulated toys as much as
boys, they are less prepared to succeed later with mechanical and
spatial challenges” (Moir & Jessel as cited in Farmer, 2008, p. 8).
“More than 99% own a television, and poorer youth spend more time watching it than
do youth in higher-income
families” (Kaiser Family
Foundation as cited in Farmer,
2008, p. 22).
