NOVEMBER 2012FROM THE CHAIRMAN

You will recall that in an earlier issue of TeeBeeCee Gazette it was men-tioned that Alan Wilson had asked that we try to find a replacement for him in his role as Sponsorship Manager. It’s fair to say that this gave the Board some real concern in that finding a new Sponsorship Manager wasn’t going to be easy – especially one who could follow in the wake of Willo’s exceptional success over such a long period of time.

It therefore gives me great delight in being able to advise that Roger Bromley has kindly agreed to take over from Alan. Fortunately for us, Roger has had previous experience in managing sponsorships whilst at his previous bowling club. So how lucky are we?

Willo, to his great credit, has actually set everything up for calendar year 2013 – no small task. So Roger will at least be able to glide into the job rather than being dropped in the deep end. Full marks then to Alan Wilson and to Roger Bromley. TBC continues to be blessed by the number of people who are ready and willing to give some of their time and their talents to the club and to the sport of lawn bowls.

Thank you Jeanette Browne and Dianne Taylor for organising everything so successfully in my absence.I believe Rheola BradleyhashadherkneeopandprogressingwellinLadyDavidson.Don’t forget Melbourne Cup Day coming up shortly and this year will be the year of the hat so dust off the good bad and ugly and pop on a chapeau ..just for fun. INNOVATING LAWN BOWLSOverthepast37yearsanumberofmyinnovationsinvolvedthedevelopmentofvariousLawnBowlsgames and training programss developed to enrich key features of our game and the way we play and participate in it.

The Super Bowl driving competition© Objective:

• Anadd-onsponsoredcompetitionforplayersparticipatinginvarioussponsoredbowlsevents.• Theconceptistoencourageplayerstolingerlongeratthevenueclubperhapsstayingforlunchor watching some matches in progress before they go home.• Thisadd-onSuperBowldrivingcompetitionisusuallysponsored.• Thedrivingcompetitionmaybeplayedduringcarnivalsandopendays.This current innovation issue will describe how the Super Bowl driving competition may also be used for coaching purposes as the format is identical.

Basic format: Any vacant rink or rinks on a bowling green may be used to participate in this competition. However the format may be used for personal practice sessions.

Players: Eachsessionorgametakes15to20minutestocomplete,andupto4playersmaytrainorcompeteinthe driving competition, playing on an available rink or rinks depending on the total number of players competing.

Rink Set up:Threejacksmarked(O)areplaceeithersideofthe(T)mark,2mfromtherearditchontheselectedrinkto form the target* as indicated :- (FrontDitch)

The driving competition format:• Aplayerorcoachstandsonthebankbehindthejacks,andvolunteerscollectthedrivenbowls and jacks when struck.• Everydrivenbowlcomingtorestisplacedonthebankbyvolunteers.• Atthecompletionofeachlengthplayed,volunteersreturnthebowlstotheplayers’readyto commence the next length to be played.

• Upto4playersmaycompetetogetheronaselectedrink.• Eachplayertakesturnstodeliver4bowlsinarowfromthemat**.• Therinkdirectororcoachonthebankentersthescore(seebelow).

Match Procedure:• Placethreejacksinarowonthe(T)spot2mfromthefrontditchillustratedabovetoformthetarget*• Thejacksremaininthatpositionthroughoutthedrivingcompetitionandarerepositionedwhen struck out.• Onematiscarriedbyacompetingplayertoplaceitontherelevantlengthspottodrivefrom.• Eachplayertakestheirturnindependentlydeliveringfourdrives**comprisingtwoforehandsthentwo backhandstocompleteeachofthethreelengthstobeplayed.(Thisfeaturewasintroducedtotestthe skillofbothforehandandbackhanddeliveriestobeevaluatedlaterthebycoaches.)• Playstartsbyplacingthematonthe(T)spot2mfromtherearditchoppositethejacksplacedonthe (T)spot2mfromthefrontditchtocommencedrivingthemaximumlength.• Followingthecompletionofthemaximumlength,thematismovedupandplacedona30mmarked spotmidwaybetweentheminimumlengthindicatedonthesidebanksandthe2m(T)markonatrear ditch, to commence driving the medium length.• Followingthecompletionofthemediumlengththematismovedupandplacedonthenormal minimum length mark indicated on the side banks to commence driving the minimum length, to end that match up between the players or player participating.• Thedrivingcompetitionendswheneachplayerorplayercompletesfourdrivesfromeachofthethree mat lengths marked up on the rink, delivering a total of 12 drives.• AlldelivereddrivesmustcausethebowlandJacktoendupintheditchtoscore.•Playersmustnotrunuptotheheadfollowingtheirdrive.

HI VEG MUFFINS by Dorothy McDermott via Glennis Wood and Molly Rayner

Ingredients:

600gramsvegetables.IputalmostanythinginthatIhave;kumara,capsicum,onion.Iusea bit of garlic, celery, bok-choy, broccoli. Basically anything you have in the fridge. 100 grams corn kernels – fresh or canned – if canned, then drain first. 1/3cupvegetableoil 250gramsreducedfatcheddarcheese;IusewhateverIhaveinthefridge. SaltandPepper 2cupsSelfRaisingFlour,sifted(Iusuallyusewholemeal.) 4eggs

Method: Heatoven180° GreasemuffinTins–approx18 Grate what you have, kumera, cheese, garlic etc. Chop the rest finely. Add corn in mixing bowls with oil, grated cheese and season. Foldinflour.Ilikeabitofthathotpaprikapowderfoldedintoflour. Whiskeggstillfrothy,thenfoldintovegmix.Spoonintogreasedmuffintins(notpaperones) Bake20to25minutes. Letmuffinscoolcompletelybeforeremovingfromtin. I usually have a warm one.
