Theodore Roosevelt Journal Entry
June 30,1876
Dear Journal,
It is a very warm and sunny summer afternoon. I am currently sitting in my garden as i
watch the view of the mesmerizing sunset in my home in oyster bay. My sister,Anna, insisted
that is stay inside since she is afraid that i might suffer from another asthma attack . However, i
couldn't help but come outside and appreciate the beauty of nature. Each day it inspires me and
surprises me more with all of it’s beauty. As i look around my garden, the memories have rushed
across my mind of certain events that i have shared with nature…. As my five year old self sat in
the january winter night with my father reading books, the picture of a fox had captured my
attention. I was suddenly astonished by the beauty of the fox since i had never seen anything like
that before. I pointed it out to my father as i called it the face of god. My father saw the way i
stared at the fox and told me that nature was a very beautiful mystery that i would soon discover
over the years, and he was right. Ever Since that day i discovered that i had a tremendous love
and appreciation for nature.
A year after i was born Charles Darwin published his scientific treatise to the world. His
views on wildlife biology had captured my imagination and inspired me. I loved that he had gone
beyond the physical studies of anatomy to include behavioral similarities in his research….
Suddenly as i looked across the garden, my eyes captured the image of my six year old self
sitting under the shade of the pine tree, observing as a group of ants carried the crumbs of my
leftover sandwich … It was an extremely hot day and my parents finally let me outside since the
temperatures had cooled off. There was a fresh summer breeze in the air and it was very
soothing. My mother made me a sandwich and let me enjoy it as i observed certain creatures in
the grass. I set my sandwich down for a moment in order to tie my shoelace. To my surprise i
turned back, and i saw approximately twelve ants working together to collect the crumbs of my
leftover food. I suddenly found myself touching them. This had altered them, and led and they
tried to escape from me. However, my hands managed to grab five of them. I quickly wrapped
them up in a paper towel and ran inside my room to store them in a jar, excited to be able to
observe them later.
As i came back from my flashback i noticed that it was completely dark outside and the
moon started to come out. The night sky reminded me of when my asthma was at its worst
condition. When i got the attacks my father would ride me around in a carriage hoping to get
oxygen into my lungs. Due to the asthma, i was forced to spend most of my days at home,
leading me to be more interested in collecting creatures… As i walked through broadway in the
spring afternoon, i noticed the carcass of a seal lying on a slab of wood. The seal captured my
attention and i looked at it as if it were a precious field of gold. I would run to the market where i
had first seen it everyday and recorded measurements of it with my folding pocket foot rule.
Eventually i obtained the seal, making it my first exhibit. Thus my creation of the Theodore
Roosevelt Museum of Natural History had started at the age of eight, and included a dozen
mice, a bat, a turtle, four bird eggs, and the skull of a red squirrel.
I can’t believe how many memories were rushing across my mind and i began to feel
overwhelmed as i looked back into my childhood. My eyes began to water as i saw how my
passion for nature inspired me to think beyond and do so much. … My parents and i had set off
on yet another interesting adventure to Europe and Egypt. It was in the Nile where my dad had
given me my very first shotgun. I was awed by the power this weapon gave me to capture and
study more animals. I also learned taxidermy, a tactic that i was taught at the age of twelve from
an assistant of John James Audubon in order to help me capture these new interesting creatures
that i did not see before back home. I tried to distract myself most of the days inspecting these
creatures since i felt very homesick.
As i remembered my trip back to Europe, my mind quickly jumped over to a couple of
months ago, my family and i had traveled again to our summer home in Oyster Bay. I always
loved coming to oyster bay since it gave me the opportunity to come in contact with what i loved
the most, nature. One evening, my eyes noticed a snow owl perched high in the trees. I quickly
grabbed my shotgun and captured the mesmerizing creature. Words couldn't explain how proud i
felt at the moment, I quickly called my father over to show him the creature and he was very
proud. His eyes brightened as he saw the joy that i was experiencing. The snow owl would
become one of my favorites in the collection. I still have it in my room , where it is mounted and
put beside the rest. It is now completely dark outside and the only thing visible is the shape of
the branches in the pine tree. I am surprised at how many memories were able to rush across my
mind today. From my first inspiration of nature at the age of five, to recently capturing an owl at
the age of seventeen, i realize that my ambition to learn more about nature will never stop. I hope
to share my discoveries with the rest of the world, just like darwin once did. My goal is to assure
that its beauty and wonders will forever carry on. I am only seventeen years of age and there is
so much more to come ahead. The temperature has dropped a lot compared to how it was in the
day and i can hear my mother calling to get inside and to get to bed. Hopefully one day i will
look back at this entry and see how much i have accomplished.
