Tectonic Plates

How Plates Move

Convection of the Earth’s mantle due to Earth’s internal heat. It moves in a pattern called a convection cell that forms when warm material rises, cools, and eventually sink down.

Major Tectonic Plates

African, Antarctic, Eurasian, Indo- Australian, North American, South American, and Pacific Plates. Over time, Tectonic Plates move around and can crash into each other. That can cause things like volcanos, ocean basins, fault lines, etc.

Ocean Basin

The Pacific Ocean Basin is bounded on the east by the North and South American continents; on the north by the Bering Strait; on the west by Asia, the Malay Archipelago, and Australia; and on the south by the Southern Ocean. It is the largest and deepest ocean in the world.

Mountain Chain

The Himalaya Mountain Range is the highest mountain range in the world. It also has Mount Everest, the worlds largest mountain. The Andes Range is the longest continental mountain range in the world.

A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in the Earth’s crust, which allows hot magma, ash and steam to come out of it. Mount Saint Helens is an active volcano located in Washington.

Mid Ocean Ridge

A mid ocean ridge is an underwater mountain range caused by tectonic plates. These form on a divergent boundary. The Mid Atlantic Ridge is an ocean ridge along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the longest mountain range in the world. In this picture, the North American plate and the Eurasian plate are moving apart from each other.

Fault Line

A fault line is the surface of a trace fault, the line of intersection between the fault plane and the Earths surface. The San Andres Fault in California, who's quacks are caused by transform boundaries.

Schedule • 1st day: We are driving to California then getting on a boat to the pacific

ocean basin on a boat• 2nd day: We are going fly to Asia to see the Himalaya mountain chain.• 3rd day: We are going to fly to South America to see Andes mountain chain• 4th day: We are going to Washington to see Mount St. Helens• 5th day: We are on a submarine to the Mid-Atlantic ridge• 6th day: We are flying to California to see the san Andréa's fault• 7th day: We are flying back to our home town, Wylie
