    Australian Curriculum: Update

After lengthy processes by ACARA, the Board of Studies and the DEC, consultation on the Draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Tech-nologies paper has finally closed. Our consultation clearly showed that teachers in NSW were con-cerned about the future impact of the Australian Curriculum. We had 195 responses to the survey and ran 4 videoconferences to meet demand.

On Tuesday 3 July, the Technolo-gies National Panel convened via teleconference to discuss the con-sultation feedback and recom-mendations for revision. So where to from here? Editing of the Draft Shape Paper will take place and be presented to the ACARA Board late July in readiness for the writing process early Au-gust. ACARA is aiming to publish the finalised curriculum by the end of 2013.

AN ONLINE RESOURCE TO SUPPORT THE BUILT AN ONLINE RESOURCE TO SUPPORT THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ENVIRONMENT Spacewise is a design project for students in Years 7 and 8 to engage with the built environment. Originally developed in collaboration with the NSW Architects Registration Board as a professional learning course for teachers, the new Spacewise resource takes students on a journey through the design process, immersing them in the exploration of their local community and immediate environment to create authentic learning experiences about the interaction of people, places and spaces. Spacewise provides opportunities for creativity and problem solving while recognising the value of project-based learning.

Spacewise encourages connection with the built environment and exploration of the relationships that exist when people interact with their environment. Students identify a public space that needs redesigning. They use feedback from their target market to vali-date their design ideas or to modi-fy solutions to better meet the needs and wants of users. They develop a range of communication de-vices to convey their ideas in the form of a proposal pitched to a chosen

audience hopefully those with the power to turn their design solutions into reality. Spacewise will be released in the coming months. Direct links to the resource will be featured on the Tech-nology pages of the Curriculum Support website.
