DOCA Rioja

HistoryMediterranean wine culture was, in the Middle Ages, closely linked to

the monastic lie, as their major broadcasters were the monks.

Rioja area is no eception and is proud that Gonzalo de Berceo, the rst

poet who wrote in the Romance language, the wine mentioned in

the verses he wrote rom his retreat in the Suso Monastery

in San Milln de la Cogolla.

The rst document to make reerence to protecting and ensuring

the quality o Rioja wines dating rom 1650, even beore in 1102,

King Sancho o Navarra legally recognized our prestigious wines.

In 1787 was created the Royal Economic Society Rioja Growers, aimed

at promoting the cultivation o vines, wine production and trade development.

Already in the twentieth century, in 1902, was issued a Royal Decree whichdened the origin or application to the wines o Rioja. In 1926 he decreed the

creation o the Control Board whose mission was to identiy the area o Rioja,

control the issuance o the seal o guarantee and recommend legal action be

taken against inringers and countereiters o the name Rioja. However, until

1945, the agency would not be legally structured.

In the evolution to the present Rioja wine is the approval in 1970 o the

Rules o the Appellation o Origin and its Regulatory Board.

Ater a long process in which the Denomination o Origin Rioja always bet

on the quality and control at source, this eort reached its recognition.

On 3 April 1991 a Ministerial Order granted the status o Qualied

Denomination o Origin Rioja.

Grape VarietiesThe grape varieties that are currently authorised

by the Regulations o the D. O. Ca. Rioja are:

RED: TEMPRANILLO, GARNACHA, GRACIANO,

MAZUELO y MATURANA TINTA.

WHITE:VIURA, MALVASA, GARNACHA BLANCA,

TEMPRANILLO BLANCO, MATURANA BLANCA,

TURRUNTS, CHARDONNAY, SAUVIGNON BLANC

History

The Bodegas de la Real Divisa, o balos (Rioja), date rom at least

1367 and are some o the oldest wineries in production in Europe.

Bodegas de la Real Divisa owe their name to the emblem o the

pitcher with white lilies that can be ound upon the entrance arch,

an symbol which is not only historic, but is also closely connectedwith the Royal House o Navarra

Marqus de Legarda, the red wine o Bodegas de la Real Divisa, has

adorned the tables o many noble, Spanish amilies over many years.

King Garca III, o Njera (1035-1054), ounded the Order o the Terazza

(Order o the Pitcher), to which said emblem corresponds to

commemorate his encounter with the image o Our Lady the Virgin

in a cave, over which he erected the Monastery o Santa Mara Real

o Njera, pantheon o the Kings o Navarra.

According to legend, King Garca, went out hunting with his goshawk

one morning, near the peak o Njera, along part o the French Way.

A partridge took fight and it, ollowed by the goshawk, took reuge

in a cave hidden by brambles and holms. The alcon breached the

entrance and the King ollowed. He ound himsel ace to ace with

the image o the Our Lady with the Child Jesus, at whose eet and on

either side, the goshawk and the partridge lay in perect harmony,

in the oreground there was a pitcher lled with lilies.

Bodegas de la Real Divisa were the rst wineries o Rioja to

receive a medal at the Bordeau Ehibition in 1895.
