Definition:

The field of instructional technology & design

encompasses the analysis of learning

performance problems, and the design,

development, implementation, evaluation and

management of instructional processes and

resources intended to improve learning …

After decades, this is the present definition

History of ID&T

Onset of WWII there was growth of “Audio

Visual Instruction” (later called IT) in the

military, and lessened in schools.

Over four million showings of training films

between 1943-1945.

Post WWII Media Research showed that

media used for training was successful.

Does media make a difference?

In the 1950s “Instructional Television”

became the new wave in ID&T for schools

$170 million was spent on educational

television … it proved to fail

By mid-1960s these idea were dropped

and the failure was primarily because of

poor instructional design.

From 70’s to 90’s computers have

changed as has the use of them

Sputnik … concern during the cold war

brought the internet … then in the 90’s we

saw the WWW come about

By now technology is evolving at a rate

beyond the speed of our ability to learn.

Can technology influence learning ???

How do we use technology to enhance

teaching and learning?

We have a duty to our students to use

technology to enhance learning

We have a duty to ensure that all of our

students have an appropriate familiarity

with the technology that is so rapidly

remaking the world.

Why should we use technology in

our teaching and learning?

By using technology to enhance teaching

and learning, we improve our core function

as educators, therefore giving our students

the skills they need to be successful in

their learning in school and in life.

Teacher is well prepared

Motivates and excites students

Communicate effectively with students

Bringing up to date information to students

successful learning?

Students gain and retain knowledge.

Students develop critical thinking skills

Student integrate knowledge into other

areas of learning

Student develop problem solving skills

Using technology to enhance the

learning process

The use of modern instructional

technologies enhances teaching, and

learning, by promoting all of these

characteristics.

Both teaching characteristics and learning

characteristics that we desire

Media Now & Then

Possibly the media was not put to good use for the purpose to educate !!!

Today, the technology available is far advanced beyond what teachers had only ten years ago

As technologies becomes available, we see them being implemented in education
