History of ID&T
Onset of WWII there was growth of “Audio
Visual Instruction” (later called IT) in the
military, and lessened in schools.
Over four million showings of training films
between 1943-1945.
Post WWII Media Research showed that
media used for training was successful.
Does media make a difference?
History of ID&T
In the 1950s “Instructional Television”
became the new wave in ID&T for schools
$170 million was spent on educational
television … it proved to fail
By mid-1960s these idea were dropped
and the failure was primarily because of
poor instructional design.
Can media influence learning?
History of ID&T
From 70’s to 90’s computers have
changed as has the use of them
Sputnik … concern during the cold war
brought the internet … then in the 90’s we
saw the WWW come about
By now technology is evolving at a rate
beyond the speed of our ability to learn.
Can technology influence learning ???
How do we use technology to enhance
teaching and learning?
We have a duty to our students to use
technology to enhance learning
We have a duty to ensure that all of our
students have an appropriate familiarity
with the technology that is so rapidly
remaking the world.
Why should we use technology in
our teaching and learning?
By using technology to enhance teaching
and learning, we improve our core function
as educators, therefore giving our students
the skills they need to be successful in
their learning in school and in life.
What are some characteristics
good teaching?
Teacher is well prepared
Motivates and excites students
Communicate effectively with students
Bringing up to date information to students
What are some characteristics of
successful learning?
Students gain and retain knowledge.
Students develop critical thinking skills
Student integrate knowledge into other
areas of learning
Student develop problem solving skills
Using technology to enhance the
learning process
The use of modern instructional
technologies enhances teaching, and
learning, by promoting all of these
characteristics.
Both teaching characteristics and learning
characteristics that we desire
Media Now & Then
Possibly the media was not put to good use for the purpose to educate !!!
Today, the technology available is far advanced beyond what teachers had only ten years ago
As technologies becomes available, we see them being implemented in education
Examples of Technology
