CONSTANT INNOVATION

A good measure of success for the technology development work we have undertaken is the level of industry recognition we have achieved. SBM Offshore is proud to have been awarded several Spotlight on New Technology awards in recent years at the Industry’s annual showcase event, the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). The wide diversity of new products recognized in these awards is testament to the breadth of SBM Offshore’s technology innovation.

Industry Recognition

The FPSO Turritella breaks two new records as the world’s deepest production facility and is the world’s first

disconnectable turret with steel risers.

SBM Offshore has created a standardized new build FPSO concept, “Fast4WardTM”, with simplified hull and topsides designs leading to

major weight, cost and schedule reductions.

SBM Offshore has used the operating experience from our DeepDraftTM Semi-submersibles to generate the next generation

Semi-Sub hull, optimized for steel risers.

SBM Offshore has developed innovative solutions for floating LNG production, using our experience on FPSO tanker conversions

to find low cost solutions for mid-scale FLNG.

TECHNOLOGY CREATING VALUE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT GLOBAL TEAM

A Pedigree of InnovationSBM Offshore’s technology strategy is based on our clients’ needs and our vision. We believe that the oceans will provide the world with safe, sustainable and affordable energy for generations to come. Our strong track record in reliable ocean-based energy production is based on our 60-year history of innovation. Today, SBM Offshore continues to optimize, transform and innovate. We anticipate the industry’s needs and optimize our solutions for an evolving industry. We apply our pioneering Fast4WardTM programme to our next generation products, giving better performance, delivered faster.

Mooring Systems for floating production units: From the initial systems in shallow water and mild environments, to ever deeper and harsher conditions. SBM Offshore has been the market and technology leader in offshore mooring systems continuously since the first CALM buoy terminal for Shell in 1959.

The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO): from pioneering the leased FPSO market for tanker conversions, SBM Offshore has been steadily moving to increasingly larger capacities and more complex processing units.

Floating Production Units (FPUs) including Tension Leg Platforms and Semi-Submersibles: Reaching ever deeper water and more challenging environments, SBM Offshore is accommodating increasingly complex SURF (Subsea, Umbilical, Riser & Flowline) interfaces.

Floating Gas System (FGS) production technology: We are developing sustainable solutions as we move to a low carbon future, with a more dominant role for gas, offering new build and conversion FLNG and hydrogen solutions by transitioning our FPSO technology.

Renewable Energy products: SBM Offshore’s hydrodynamics and mooring systems expertise are being utilized to create a new range of offshore clean energy projects for floating wind and wave.

Technology Trends in the Offshore Energy IndustryTo ensure that its investment in technology development is focused in the most rewarding areas, SBM Offshore carefully monitors and tracks market trends to identify future technology requirements, and ranks these to select promising areas for R&D and product development.

Chief amongst these is the trend to renewable sources of energy, such as offshore wind and wave, alongside a more dominant role for gas in the future. SBM is well positioned to bring its ocean project management know-how and skills to bear on these rapidly evolving new market areas and is developing a solid portfolio and business strategy to meet the needs of the future energy mix.

Today the greatest challenge is to continue to improve our current products; address ongoing technical challenges and reduce field development costs, while investing in product innovation for the transition to future renewable markets. SBM Offshore seeks early engagement with our clients to understand their technology requirements and to share our technology knowledge. Our aim is to ensure our current and future technology development meets the needs of our clients.

Bringing New Technology to Project ReadinessIt is critical that all new technology is fully developed, tested and certified before being used on real projects. Failure to do so could incur huge risks to project cost, schedule, performance and/or safety.

SBM Offshore therefore has a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) process, which is an adaptation of the TRL process defined in API RP 17N (Recommended Practice for Subsea Production System Reliability and Technical Risk Management, 2009).

Using this process, new technology components and systems are brought to maturity through seven stage gates from screening, validation and prototyping until considered sufficiently robust to be deployed on projects. After three years of successful operations, the technology is declared as ‘mature’ (TRL7).

We supplement TRL with BRL (Business Readiness Level) which ensures that as new technology reaches maturity, we also develop our execution and marketing readiness to accompany this new technology.
