Some of you may be aiming at shaping your future and some of you may be busy with your favourite hobbies. Being a teacher, I understand better and can feel how difficult a life the present day children are living. We have more than what we expect, we have all sorts of modern facilities and luxuries but what we do not have is proper mental peace. Let me share some of my thoughts and ideas of how present day students can keep themselves happy and mentally fit in every aspect. Our busy lifestyle leads us to be mechanically satisfied – we are addicted to electronic media like tablets or television. But every child needs to play outdoors for his or her physical, social and emotional well-being. The world is changing fast. When we were young, our parents found it tough to get us into the house from the playground; and today we find it difficult to make our children go out of the house and play. Kids today are as attached to electronic tablets, computers, mobile phones, video games and television shows as they were once to the umbilical cords in their mothers’ wombs! With 40 to 60 hours a week spent with the hypnotic entertainment of media and the rest of their time spent in school activities, outdoor games have become a non-entity in their lives. The lifestyle of today’s children is the main cause behind the alarmingly high level of stress – something they are experiencing in their daily life which in turn also affects their studies and mental development. It is often mentioned that today’s children lack proper space or playgrounds, which is grossly erroneous as on the contrary we see that most our playgrounds remain empty while the children are busy with their modern gadgets at home. Most importantly, we need to explain the importance and benefits of outdoor sports to our children and make them understand that if they are not physically fit, they cannot be mentally fit either. If children are not mentally fit, how can they fight against the continuous stress of expectations? In fact, a study has found out that letting children get dirty outside is much better for their health as compared to letting them spend time with their clean hi-tech gadgets which. Staying idle indoors for too long is making them more vulnerable to ADHD, vitamin D deficiency, depression and chronic weight- related diseases. I would implore all children to keep away their electronic gadgets away as these gadgets are the foremost causes of some dangerous health disorders like obesity, nervous system disorder, nervous breakdown syndrome among today’s young generation. Therefore I suggest and expect all children will come out of the four walls into in the fields either with a cricket bat or a football. Let’s prove again that ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’.
