The technical trainee development program at Trican Well Service provides trainees with a unique opportunity to jump start their careers in the oil and gas service industry. This program prepares the trainee for assignment to a specific service line (acidizing, cementing, coiled tubing, or fracturing). Trainees attend internal and external courses, building on their technical knowledge (university or technical school training), and apply their knowledge-finding solutions to customers’ workover/completion and/or stimulation objectives. Technical development is augmented with exposure to field and laboratory operations in each service line. TECHNICAL TRAINEE PROGRAM AT TRICAN WELL SERVICE Upon completion of the development plan, the trainee’s progress is evaluated. Then, trainees have the opportunity to specialize in a specific service line (assignment based on suitability, business needs, and the trainee’s preference). introductory technical trainee rotation The first month of employment is devoted to developing a better understanding of the oil and gas industry; specifically, the well service industry. courses are offered for each of the four major service lines, providing a broad overview of engineering concepts, theory, and routine treatments performed. Trican specialists provide lectures pertaining to introduction to the oilfield, formation damage, geology, reservoir engineering, and Trican technical design application are offered as needed.

technical Services and technical Sales rotation The technical services rotation starts once the introductory technical trainee rotation has been completed. it exposes the trainee to the practices, engineering, economics, and safety aspects that must be considered when designing a proposal for a customer. The trainee is transferred to a specific service line, reporting to that technical manager and the team lead, technical training. roles and responsibilities during these rotations will vary and offer a wide range of hands on, problem solving and learning opportunities.

field operations rotation The operations component of the technical trainee rotation enables the trainee to develop an understanding of logistics, practical issues that may require changes to engineering design, equipment specifications, and operating capabilities. Safe and efficient execution and placement of a treatment must be considered when designing a workover/stimulation program for a customer. Trainees are expected to take initiative to help in the operation of all equipment that Trican uses in its day-to-day operations. Direct equipment operation by the technical trainee is subject to training certification and is at the discretion of the supervisor on location.

laboratory rotation The laboratory rotation introduces the technical trainee to the terminology and the test procedures used to ensure all Trican-designed blends, fluids, and products meet and exceed industry-recommended practices. They will also be given an opportunity to operate analytical instruments and will be instructed on how to interpret the results of the lab testing. laboratory instruction will focus primarily on stimulation fluids and cementing blends.

Professional association licensure and Mentorship Trican’s commitment to providing innovative engineering solutions for our customers translates into taking steps to ensure our people have the highest in technical competence. mentorship is an important component of the development of technical competence, therefore Trican offers a structured mentorship program for each trainee. The goals of the mentorship program are to contribute to the professional development of all technical trainees such that:

licensure with the association of Science and engineering Technology Professionals of alberta (aSeT) as a certified engineering technologist (ceT) can be achieved within 24 months of employment.

licensure with the association of Professional engineers and geoscientists of alberta (aPega) as a professional engineer (P. eng.) can be achieved within four years of employment.
