a. Product Description: Ceremonial items that are predominantly made from wood, cane or fibreglass i.e. pace stick, walking stick and miniature drum sticks

5.1 Design and assembly

• The design, assembly, textures and shades of all items are to be strictly in accordance with that of the guiding standard pattern, except those caused through the effects of natural wear and tear and ageing

TABLE 6– PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF METAL EMBELLISHMENTS Visual Requirement of Finished Insignia The Items are to be compared against the appropriate Standard Pattern for mechanical imperfections and any streakiness or unequal colouring. They are to be viewed, under no magnification, at a distance of between 30cm to 40cm in daylight or in a daylight colour-matching booth. Laboratory

• Four sample items are to be stored in a suitable tropical chamber for a period of 28 days at 32° and 90% RH

• After this period if none of the Items have changes in appearance the Items are acceptable

Abrasion Resistance of Finished Items The Item is to be securely mounted face side down, onto each of the four moving heads of a Martindale abrasion tester. (One convenient method is to attach the item directly to the moving head using double-sided tape). The heads are to be mounted onto the abrasion tester and a load of 576gms applied and rubbed against the standard worsted abradant fabric* for 60 minutes. At the end of the test the Item is to be removed and examined. If none of the Items have significantly changed in appearance then they are acceptable. *The Abradant is to be crossbred worsted fabric with the following finished particulars.

4. PACKAGING AND LABELLING REQUIREMENTS

a. Package and Labelling should be in accordance with the contract. b. Items should always be packaged in a way to prevent damage during transit

and storage. c. Each item is to be first wrapped in fully bleached, acid free lightweight

unglazed tissue paper. It shall be free from foreign matter to prevent damage by rubbing, before being packed in suitably sealed clear polythene bags.

d. The bag shall be clearly identified with Item Description, NSN, Contract Number, Size, Denomination and Year of Manufacture.

e. Multiple quantities of individually packaged NSN’s may be shipped in the same box. Mixed NSN multiple packaging is not permitted.

f. Multiple packaging label - Each outer package is to be clearly labelled with the Item Description, NSN, Contract Number, Size, Quantity, Denomination and Year of Manufacture

MANUFACTURING INFORMATION Construction • The aluminium faced plywood case shall be manufactured in

accordance with the Standard Pattern (D00011)

• The internal dimensions shall be as specified below a) Length 1610mm +/- 5mm b) Width and height 152mm +/- 5mm

• The case shall be constructed from aluminium faced plywood panels

• Junctions of the plywood/aluminium panels are to be joined with locating aluminium extrusions and the corner joints are to be protected with aluminium ball corners

• The joint from the base to the lid shall be constructed using “lidmaker” aluminium sections

• Four rubber feet are to be fitted to the base corners

• The carrying handle is to be fitted to the lid. The centre of the handle is to be positioned 710mm ± 10mm from the Staff Drum Major head end of the case

• Two turn and lock catches shall be fitted to the front of the case

• One toggle clip catch shall be fitted to each end of the case

Construction • Three braced hinges shall be fitted to the rear of the case

• Three 27mm Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) internal dividers, padded and lined with green baize, shall be fitted. Half of each of each divider is to be fitted to the base and half to the lid, with a machined recess to hold the staff body firmly in place in the middle of the case

• The end of the case which holds Staff Drum Major Head shall be completely lined with 25mm open cell polyurethane foam (packing case foam), as shown on the Standard Pattern. The end that holds the Staff Drum Major Shoe shall also be lined with 25mm open cell foam

• Fixings, with the exception of the central dividers, are to be rivets. All rivets that penetrate the plywood/aluminium panels are to be backed with washers

• The central dividers are to be attached with 20mm pan head screws

MANUFACTURING INFORMATION Construction • Component parts of the Pace Stick is to be manufactured from the

materials specified in the Bill of Materials and is to conform to the drawings listed above

• Each leg is to be tapered at one end, and a steel tipped brass ferrule fitted. The ferrule must be a close fit, with no looseness and the timber shall project the full length of the inside of the ferrule. Both this portion of the leg and the inside of the ferrule are be well coated with synthetic resin adhesive and secured with a single countersunk head brass screw

• The hinge, slot plates and locking plate are to be securely and neatly fitted into position as shown on the relevant drawing

MANUFACTURING INFORMATION Construction • When the legs of the Pace Stick are spread and locked, by means

of the locking screw through the legs and one of the locating holes in the arm, the distance between the tips of the ferruled legs is to measure the exact number of inches as stipulated for that hole

• When folded together, the legs are to show no appreciable deviation from one another along their length

Finishing • The screws are to be properly turned in, with the heads slightly below the plate surfaces

• All burrs and sharp edges are to be removed

• Timber components are to be sanded smooth and left unfinished
