Your requirement is our challenge.

his is our mission statement in the now almost 100 years-long success story of Schwartz. In 1924, the company was founded as the first European company to produce non-metallic slide bearings

for rolling mills. We are now a leading manufacturer of engineering plastics and a capable industry partner in the ever-evolving field of engineering plastics.

TIn order to optimally use living spaces in densely populated cities, elevators are be-ing built which save space. Likewise, obso-lete and maintenance-intensive elevators are being replaced by more durable models adapted to space restrictions.

The constructional components are also getting smaller but still must work at the same level of efficiency.

Formerly, only heavy steel deflection rollers were used for elevator construction, but things have changed: the rollers must be small, light and fast, as well as conveni-ent and durable. But it is essential not to lose sight of the most important thing: safety.

The requirement.

Schwartz deflection rollers made of OPTAMID® have been used in elevator technology with great success for over 35 years. Machine parts made of high quality engineering plastics are today replacing heavy metal components in many cable-driven elevators and escalators. Schwartz plastics have proven themselves in these systems because they are lightweight, durable and maintenance-free and are therefore the better alternative to metal, both technically and economically.

Our thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics are known worldwide under the registered trademarks LAMIGAMID®, LAMINEX® and OPTAMID® for their extremely high quality and offer compelling benefits for the elevator and escalator industry.

The solution: Best performance with very low system cost.

Over 35 years of success with the world’s largest elevator manufacturers. Schwartz products are certified - worldwide. As the first manufacturer of engineering plastics for elevator and escalator systems, Schwartz GmbH has been awarded the coveted USA Certificate (Certificate of Conformance ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7). Impressive proof of quality that gives you a feeling of security - no matter where in the world your systems are.

With LAMIGAMID® high-perfor-mance plastic, Schwartz has set the stage for extremely durable products such as the newly de-veloped winch drums for eleva-tor systems. The combination of high strength, dimensional sta-bility and long lifetime with very low weight is one-of-a-kind.

Door rollers and hand wheels, for instance, have to withstand high loads over long periods of time. Schwartz developed the product LAMINEX® for these particularly high demands. Able to take even heavier loads than LAMIGAMID®, it is highly rigid, fire retardant and very stable. It meets the highest standards in elevator systems that are exposed to extreme stress.

Three raw materials with superior propertiesGentle, quiet and tough, OPTAMID® is the material which is mainly used for deflection rol-lers. The strands of the deflection rollers made from smooth mate-rial OPTAMID® fit perfectly on the steel cables. Friction, vibration and associ-ated driving noise are reduced, causing the ropes to hold much longer.

Deflection rollers

ore than half of all elevators manufactured worldwide are cable-driven elevators. In addition to traction sheaves, deflection rollers of varying size, design and quantity are used for these eleva-tors. Today, OPTAMID® deflection rollers from Schwartz are used in over 600,000 cable-driven elevator systems. The many years of use in countless elevator systems worldwide show that

OPTAMID® deflection rollers are clearly superior to gray cast iron rollers in terms of durability.

Moreover, the elastic material reduces vibrations in the eleva-tor car. The result is less and thus more pleasant driving noise - a comfort that your passengers will appreciate. In addition, the material OPTAMID® scores points with excellent resistance to rope lubricants and corrosion.

And OPTAMID® deflection rol-lers from Schwartz have another benefit: the base material is yel-low and does not have to be painted. On request, you can re-ceive rolling bearings and axles along with the rollers.

The low weight of the OPTAMID® material of 1.15 g/cm² allows for a weight saving of up to 75% compared to steel. Lightness which not only reduces the opera- ting costs. Since additional lifting equipment is usually not required for installation and renovation, your installation costs are mini-mized. In addition, the low weight protects the bearings and your systems as well. The light weight of OPTAMID® deflection rollers by Schwartz is a double win in this re-spect, not to mention the added benefits of durability.

Thanks to the elastic material properties, wear on the rope is significantly reduced and the rope lifespan is increased accor-dingly. Due to the low E -modu-lus of the material OPTAMID®, the plastic deflection roller clings bet-ter to the ropes, meaning there are more points of contact be-tween rope and roller. The surface pressure between the deflection rollers and rope is lower and the ropes are subject to lower flex-ural stress. This means substan-tially longer lifetime of the ropes. Less and shorter downtimes are a positive effect of these properties. Again a plus in terms of operating costs.

Safety first - Quality matters.

Since OPTAMID® deflection rollers are used for the immediate transport of persons, our motto is “Safety First”. In collaboration with government agencies, institutions and TÜV, deflection rollers are designed to meet demanding technical requirements and thus can be used without objection from TÜV.

For years, Schwartz products have also met the US safety standards and have been awarded the coveted USA Certificate “Certificate of Conformance”. This makes Schwartz the only manufacturer of plastic products authorized to equip US lifts and transportation systems.

Of course, deflection rollers from OPTAMID® can be produced in all other dimensions according to your exact requirements. Details on our standard product range can be found in our brochure “OPTAMID® Deflection Rollers for Elevator Construction”.

You haven’t found the deflection rollers you are looking for? Don’t hesitate. The Schwartz design en-gineers will assist you in realizing your individual requirements.

Due to the high global demand, Schwartz has developed a stand-ard product range for OPTAMID® deflection rollers. It provides an overview of rollers of various sizes with diameters from 120 mm up to max. 1500 mm and widths of 40 to 200 mm. The role blanks are always in stock; only the finishing of the rope groove, i.e. groove shape and spacing, are manufactured individually according to your needs, which results in quick delivery of your custom-made products.

Hand wheels

The hand wheel, which can manually operate the elevator car in case of emergency, must be durable, robust and flame retardant.

The two Schwartz materials OPTAMID® (thermoplastic) and the thermosetting LAMINEX® meet exactly those needs, and even more: both materials offer the advantage of significantly lower specific weight compared to metal materials. Thus, the plastic hand wheels have a significant weight advantage, which in turn means less gyrating mass (GD2).

Balancing the OPTAMID® and LAMINEX® hand wheels is not necessary. Both materials can be colored yellow, making time-consuming painting unnecessary. It is possible to manufacture the hand wheels with steel hubs. Naturally, hand wheels made of OPTAMID® and LAMINEX® are dimensionally stable as well as shock- and impact-resistant.

scalators primarily serve to make life easier. Originally, sparing your legs the work of climbing stairs

was enough; today, silent and vibration-free operation is expected.

E

Reason enough to look more closely at the cause of the noise, i.e. all driven and driving machine parts.

In particular, sockets and gear wheels as well as V- and drive-belt pulleys are still commonly made from metallic materials. Schwartz has been manufacturing these products from heavy-duty engi-neering plastics LAMIGAMID® and LAMINEX® for many years.

The low E-modulus of Schwartz materials ensures smooth and pleasant operation of the com-ponents.

Sockets and gear wheels and V-belt pulleys are made of LAMIGAMID® 310 to 319 and LAMIGAMID® 1200, while drive-belt pulleys are made from LAMIGAMID® 310 or LAMINEX® 2101.

Which of the many available materials can be used is determined solely by your application and operating conditions. Contact our engineering team. Together we can find the optimal solution for your systems.
