PRESENTATION

The study of the resources of the Java Sea pelagie fishand of the development of purse seiners in that sea ispart of RIMF's* activities since 1980. This study wasextended in 1984 through bilateral cooperation withORSTOM**. The Java Sea Pelagie Fishery AssessmentProject", starting in early 1991, is the continuation ofthese research's efforts. This project will improve theknowledges on the big and medium purse seiners fisheryand on the coastal pelagie fish populations assardinella, scads, selars and mackerels.

This document is part of a work made by the BPPL'scounterpart of the naval architect expert appointed tothe project. It gathers the measurements made on boardsorne big and medium seiners in order to f ind the truedimensions of these vessels and to calculate the Grosstonage.

After a brief review of the methods used by theIndonesian administration to calculate the gross tonage,a figure with the main measurements and the list ofabreviations used in the tables, the document givessynthetic tables of aIl technical informations gatheredon the vessels that have been measured.

TONNAGE MEASUREMENT

whereL = Length which is measured on upper bulwark

with horizontal range from aft of the stemup ta the transom forward.

B = Horizontal range which is measured betweenbath outside of the starboard and port onits widest part exluded guard rail.

D = Vertically range on widest part of thevessels which is measured from below sideof the bottom frame up ta the below side ofthe upper deck.

C = Factor = 0.60

NEW METHOD

since 1990, tonnage, measurement of the big purse seinevessels in the Java Sea is based on the Director General of seaTransport Decree N° PY 67/1/13-90, in accordance with theInternational System.

Gross tonnage is calculated in accordance with the 3rdrule of the 1969 International Convention on TonnageMeasurement of ship. The gross tonnage formula is as follow :

GT = K . V

where V = Total volume of the space below part ofupper deck adding by completely closedspaces on the upper deck which have volumeless than 1 m3

K = 0.25

Net tonnage = 0.60 X GT
