The living room: This is the main area where the occupants in the home congregate for social activities.
The living room is the center of the living space in most homes thus its function location
décor, size and even the shape or extremely important and can affect the design
appearance of homes interior design.
1. Its function:
when designing a living room, the architect or the designer must always keep in mind
the needs of the occupants who are living in the home. This room can serve many
purposes, it can be an entertainment center a social room and, in some cases, even a
dining center. Its specific function depends on the living habits of the residents.
a living room needs to be designed in relation to its function and activities it serves.
2. Its location and orientation:
Ideally the living room should be centrally located adjacent to the outside entrance
of a home. In smaller residences however, the entrance may be open directly into the
living room. This design should be avoided wherever possible since the living room and
dining room tend to function the living room is usually adjacent to the dining room as
well as to the outside entrance of the home.
The living room should not be used as hallway to get to other areas of the home such
as the sleeping and service areas. This can disturb the people in the home, and it could
eventually cause unnecessary wear and tear on living room itself.

In this situation the living room is away from
house traffic. This is a better design
regarding its location.
When planning window locations in your living room you must also consider the various
seasonal changes in the landscape as well as the features of the property.
Although the windows themselves can be a decorative item the primary function of the
window is to:
1. Admit light into the room.
2. Provide a pleasant view of the landscape.
If the views from the window are unpleasant or was restricted by other buildings
translucent glass is often used to allow natural light to enter the living room without
showing any unwanted views.
3. Its size and shape:
Ideally when designing a living room, the type and the amount of living room furniture
should be determined preferably before the size of the living room is established.
One of the most difficult aspects of planning the size and shape of a living room as with
any other room is to provide sufficient wall space for the effective placement of the
furniture.
A continuous wall space is needed for the placement of many kinds of furniture
especially sofas, large televisions, and coffee tables.
The placement of the fireplace, and doors openings to other rooms need to be planned
thoughtfully to conserve as much wall space as possible for furniture placement.

Living rooms come in all sizes and shapes
small living rooms such a this one
may be as small as 150 square feet.
An average sized living room for a typical size home is usually around 250 square feet
whereas a large living room could be around 400 square feet or even larger depending
on the needs of the homeowner and the size of the home.
This living room is about 350 square feet:
To assure that the room will accommodate the necessary furniture, templates or made
with the appropriate size of each furniture. The room plan is scaled to represents the
same size and shape of the room and furniture. This way the room can be effectively
evaluated.
This is a typical size common living room furniture.
