1. Call to Order. Joseph Bittinger, Chair, called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM and welcomed the participants to the meeting.

2. Introductions. Committee members introduced themselves and identified their affiliation.

3. Approval of Minutes. The minutes from January 7-8, 2014 were approved.

4. Staff Updates. Laura Moreno provided an overview of the Fall 2018 revision cycle schedule and the NFPA process (attached).

5. Review of Public Inputs: NFPA 85 Chapter 9. The Technical Committee reviewed Public Inputs and developed First Revisions and Committee Inputs as necessary. The following items should be brought to the attention of the Fundamentals Technical Committee and the Correlating Committee:

Committee Inputs 729 and 730 – new definitions

The definition of explosion vents should use the term “deflagration pressures” rather than “explosion pressures”

6. Review of Fundamentals Technical Committee actions. The Technical Committee reviewed two First Revisions that were flagged by the Fundamentals Technical Committee for their review, and created First Revisions as necessary.

7. Task Group Reports.

Operations, Section 9.6. The task group was created at the 2014 Second Draft meeting

but has not been active. The Technical Committee decided to reconstitute the task group at the 2018 Second Draft meeting to perform a complete review of section 9.6 and related annex material to ensure that it is complete and accurate to current practices, and create recommendations for revisions or additional annex material for the next edition.

8. New Business. The Technical Committee reviewed the use of the term “flue gas” in 9.6.1.1.2 as mentioned in the minutes from the 2014 Second Draft meeting. After some discussion, the committee decided to have the Operations Task Group review this for the next edition.

The Technical Committee also discussed replacing the term “coal” with “pulverized fuel” throughout Chapter 9 and its Annex material. It was decided that a global change would not be appropriate at this time without additional review, so a task group will be formed at the Second Draft meeting to complete this for the next edition.

9. Next Meeting. The Technical Committee decided to hold the Second Draft meeting by teleconference on January 30, 2018.

10. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 1:13 PM.
