At TechShop, we’re always asking you to send us your listof your Top 5 Favorite Tools. Each month, we feature a

few of the entries we receive. And after reading our featureon the latest tools for electronic system testing (beginningon page 8), I think the most-named tool of the coming yearwill be a smartphone.

Are you using your smartphone as a tool atthe shop? The applications that have beendeveloped specifically for the automotive repair industry are incredible.

Not only can you take photos of repairsto help explain a diagnosis to a customer, you can also view live engine data, retrieve fault codes and clear check engine lights.

There are apps that will help you findthe correct parts and tools, decipher diagnostic trouble codes and conve-niently find technical service bulletins.

For the shop owner/manager, there’san app you can use to notify yourcustomers when service is due ontheir vehicle and it allows them to request an appointment in one click.

There’s an app that will analyze a photo and make an evaluation to determine if a serpentine belt is in need of replacement. Welders have an app that can conveniently access stick, TIG and MIG equipment settings and otherhelpful tips.

One app acts as a portable dynamometer that can measureacceleration, G-force and horsepower; a speedometer app allows you to check a speedometer’s accuracy.

An iATN member from Chicago said he has been using“MAF-Calc on my smartphone for a while. I must say I likeit. The app calculates the theoretical MAF value and I cancompare the calculated value with the value shown on thescan tool.”

Another iATN member from Wyndmoor, PA, recommendsan app from Log Me In software. “With this app in-

stalled on my Apple iPad I can remotelyuse any computer that I assign. Beforegoing to bed I realized I forgot to order apart for the morning. Logmein.com to therescue. In less than a minute I logged on tomy shop computer, looked at tomorrow’sschedule for the exact year/make/model thenopened Worldpac from the shop desktop andordered my part.”If you’re new to this technology, do a quick

search on YouTube and you’ll find a host ofvideos that will walk you through set-ups ofdifferent apps. I think our next Top 5 Tools column should

feature your Top 5 Favorite Apps. E-mail me [email protected], and let us know whichones you use in the shop that help save you time

and money. We’ll feature your ideas in an upcom-ing issue.

Shocking, electrifying, polarizing, spark of excitement, flash in the pan. What do all of these

words/phrases have in common? They’re all termsfrom the world of electricity or electronics used tomake a point. That point is that electricity and elec-tronics are pretty darn important to our lives. As Iwrite this article, the horrible stories about storm vic-tims in the Northeast are rolling in. The single mostcommon problem from that storm is the lack of elec-tricity. The reality is that we are almost 100% depend-ent upon electricity in our daily lives. This is especial-ly true in relation to our automobiles.Without electricity, none of us can make a living in

the automotive aftermarket. As I writer, I depend onelectricity to operate my computer, phone, etc. As atechnician, you depend on electricity to operate mostof your equipment.I hope that this article provides you with some new

ideas about tools and techniques for accomplishingthe difficult task of diagnosing and repair-ing your customers’ vehicles.

As of this writing, I am sitting on a plane many milesabove your shop, returning from the 2012 AAPEX andSEMA shows in Las Vegas. These tradeshows are themecca for everything automotive — tools, toys, blingand everything else you can imagine. If it exists in theautomotive aftermarket, OEM or manufacturing, it canbe found at one of these two shows. This year was no different in that we had the chance to

see firsthand some of the newest and coolest tools avail-able to technicians. There were tools ranging from thesimple to the absurd. From ho hum to holy cow! Somethings were new twists on old tools while some weretruly new and ground breaking.

Multimeter InnovationsThis is a tool that I was convinced had come as far asit was going to go. There are some amazing DVOMsavailable today. Ultra-high resolution, airbag safe, temperature recording, min-max, graphing, snap-shot(data capture) — all of these are features available onmany good meters today. So what, right? Nothingnew here, I agree! Sowhat did I find thatflipped my switch andsomething you shouldcheck out for yourself?Well, the first new toy I

found was a DMM with

the ability to transmit via Blue-tooth to your cell phone. With afree app you will be able to “read”the meter from anywhere in theshop (distance estimates are 500’).So what good is that, you ask?Think about hooking up your testleads to a brake light circuit at theback of the car, take your trustyphone and go sit in the driver’s seatto depress the brake pedal, activateturn signals, etc. You can “see”what is happening at the taillightright on your phone! Cool, huh?The next goody is by the same

supplier. This gadget has a differ-ent, although equally cool, superpower. This meter can upload in-formation via Wi-Fi to the Internet

or a cloud-based server. Thisseems like overkill right? I thoughtso too, at first. Now imagine you’rea technician for a fleet operator in acornfield in Iowa. You’ve diagnoseda problem that requires the replace-ment of a very expensive compo-nent. You can now e-mail a snap-shot of the test results to your

corporate director of fleetmaintenance for approval.Or...you’re a body shopowner and have deter-mined after the initial esti-mate that the car needs anew head light assembly ata cost to the insurer of$1,800. Wouldn’t it be nice tobe able to include the test re-sults to convince the company

to approve the addendum to theclaim? So, it turns out that

there arenew andinnova-tive ideasand newthingsunder thesun! (Forspecific toolnames, sendan e-mail [email protected].)The next tool, while admittedly

not completely new, has so manynew abilities that I am going to callit new. This is definitely one of thehottest new tools on the market andone you should plan on adding toyour collection. For years, a supplierhas offered a tool that allows you totest electrical components for bothground and power. This tool, whichI would bet you or someone in yourshop owns, can also inject powerinto a circuit to see if a componentworks. This tool is one of the mostpopular and widely used electricaltest tools on the market today. Thisis another tool that I would havebet could not be improved upon.

Boy, would I have been wrong!Imagine the original tool, but now it has some new

abilities. First, and perhaps the most impressive, is theaddition of auto sensing and auto ranging. Now be-fore you start yelling “foul!” I know, these are not newabilities for multimeters. There are several really goodmeters on the market today that have these capabili-ties. The difference here is that supplier has combinedthis with the original tool. In my estimation, this toolwent from being just a bruiser with the ability topound a circuit with power, to being a thinker capableof deciding what force is needed or the lack thereof toget the job done. This sophisticated tool can detect the presence of

power, as well as determine what range is needed tobest read the power. The tool will automatically beready to display volts, read resistance, etc.The next improvement from the original design is the

tool’s ability to read and interpret voltage and resist-

ance variations in a “loaded” circuit. This is an impor-tant and often overlooked step during diagnosis. Howmany times have you tested a circuit that passed tolater identify and condemn a component or wiring inthat same circuit? So what did you miss? You testedfor power, ground, switching, etc. Everything workedas specified. You failed to “stress” the circuit and eval-uate resistance on the circuit during that stress. This new tool does just that; it applies high current

while watching resistance to simulate real-world oper-ating conditions. By looking at a circuit in both astressed and non-stressed condition, you are far morelikely to find those pesky problems like burnt relaycontacts, internal corrosion and loose grounds. If youdon’t consider any other tool after reading this articlebe sure to check out this amazing new product.

Scan Tool AdvancesThere was no shortage of diagnostic scan tools avail-

able at the shows this year thatyou might want to consideradding to your collection. Onecommon theme among the newentries is the combining of testingwith communications. With eitheror both of the Wi-Fi and Bluetoothprotocols, you can find and distrib-ute the information you need toread, interpret, format, program, adjust and record data to yourheart’s content.Scan tool manufacturers now real-

ize the need to facilitate the techni-cian surfing the Net. Whether tointerpret a code, find a fix ordownload software, Internet access

is no longer just a “nice to have,” itis a “must have.” Once thought ofas a toy and a distraction, Web ac-cess is an important feature to askabout when shopping for scantools. We are seeing three common

themes with all the major manufac-turers of diagnostic equipment. Thefirst is the addition of devices builton tablet infrastructure. With theunrivaled success and near univer-sal acceptance of products made byour favorite “fruit” electronicsmanufacturer, it just makes senseto follow suit with scan tools thatuse the familiar type of interface. Having said that, to date, none of

the tools we have seen actually usehardware produced by the elec-tronics giant. Instead, everythinguses either off-the-shelf tablets orcustom-built hardware designed byauto diagnostics suppliers. Itwould seem that the cost is just tooprohibitive currently to make senseyet. In most or all cases, these toolswill feature touch technology justlike the phones and devices we useevery day in our personal lives. One of the largest suppliers told

us that they absolutely have builttheir menus and interfaces tomimic the look and feel of thescreens we see every time we grabour phones to make a call or senda text. To paraphrase the supplier:“Why try to reinvent the wheel? As cell phone users, we already

‘get it’ — we understand what thelogos and icons mean on ourphones. Why not use that sameflow and feel to operate our scantools? These tools are complicated

enough without asking the opera-tor to learn a new way of navigat-ing and a new bunch of symbols!”Sounds like an example of a proac-tive supplier listening to feedbackfrom their customers! Well done! The second recurring theme we

are seeing is reduction in size. Thisalso seems to be following the bigelectronics suppliers in terms ofmaking scan tools closer to the sizeof mid-size tablets and smart-phones. This can make sense formost technicians while it doesstrain the eyesight of us old guys! One last development we are lik-

ing is the isolation of functions intoseparate scan tools and testers. Onesupplier has created choices forcustomers to include both all-inclu-sive master tools as well as single-purpose tools that are in manycases both smaller and lowerpriced. This gives you the option ofjust buying the tool or tools youneed for your shop. Maybe youonly need ABS functionality as abrake specialist. Now you can buyjust a tool for reading and clearingthose types of codes versus a toolthat can talk to every system onthe car. This is just one example ofthe choices available to you whenshopping for scan and diagnostictools. The above are just a few of the

many new tools and equipmentavailable to you for working onand diagnosing vehicles electricaland computer systems. Be sure toask your tool and equipment dis-tributor about these great newproducts. TS

The Common Codes ofVariable Valve Timing Systems

20 December 2012 | TechShop

Variable valve timing (VVT) systemsoffer higher performance from smaller

displacement engines at higher rpm. As thesevehicles began exceeding their new car war-ranties, technicians learned the ins and outs of thesesystems and how regular oil changes could increasethe life of VVT components. Now, the VVT is playinga direct role in vehicle emissions and the way gasesare burned in the combustion camber. These systems are simple from a diagnostic per-

spective. Most VVT components are non-serviceableand have integrated sensors. But, they are part of alarger diagnostic picture that includes everythingfrom the throttle body to the oxygen sensor. On a conventional engine, both the exhaust and in-

take valves’ open or closed position depends ontheir fixed position relative to the chain or belt that’sdriven by the crankshaft. The pattern and timingcannot be altered, so there’s no way to increase ordecrease the amount of valve lap when both valvesare open at the same time.As engines go, some have great low-end perform-

ance, while others have better top-end performance. With VVT, the valve duration can be matched to the

engine speed, torque requirements and valve over-lap. Now an engine can produce both low- and high-end performance without any erratic idle conditionor high-end loss. This also enables an increase inmiles per gallon throughout the engine’s power bandby controlling valve timing and making the enginemore fuel-efficient.One great advantage of the VVT system is the way

it can take the force needed to expel the burnt mix-ture out of the exhaust valve. Pushing the exhaustgas out of a cylinder requires some of the force thatis generated during the combustion stroke. Opening

the exhaust valve whenthere is still some pressureleft in the cylinder allows asmall portion of the exhaustgas to escape before the pistonstarts its upward travel. Thisreduces the exertion fromthe crankshaft and pistonand provides a smoother, more even-running engine at every rpm level.Leaving the intake valve partially open at the right

point also allows fresh air to enter the cylinderwhile the exhaust valve is doing its job of removingthe already-burnt gases. This slight intake valveopening creates low pressure and aides the piston inpushing out the remaining gasesand getting ready for the next turnof the crankshaft. This is all the re-sult of the configurationand shape of the exhaustports and manifolds, all of which worktogether and makethe whole processseamless.

EGR and VVTOne item that’s going the way ofthe smog pump is the exhaust gasrecirculation (EGR) valve. Theelimination of the EGR valve is theresult of the VVT’s ability to con-trol gases entering and exiting thecombustion chamber. EGR systemswork, but they aren’t able to reactfast enough or precise enough formodern engines and emissionsstandards. Modern VVT systemsare doing the same job as the EGRvalve, only better.A VVT system is able to control

the timing of the exhaust valve sothat the right amount of inert ex-haust gases remain in the combus-tion chamber for the next combus-tion cycle. This controlscombustion temperatures and the

production of NOx. If you encounter a vehicle that

has higher than normal NOx lev-els, or a burnt or damaged pre-cat-alyst, make sure the VVT solenoidand exhaust camshaft position sen-sor are operating properly.

Common VVT Codes

The two most common codes I’verun across are P0011 and P0021(Camshaft position sensor “Bank 1”and Camshaft position sensor“Bank 2,” respectively). These codes(like any code) don’t entirely meanthe sensor is faulty, however the di-agnostic charts will tell you to lookat the VVT system for a fault andcheck the sensor as well. Some ofthe common areas to look into are:valve timing, oil control valve, oil

control valve filter screen, camshafttiming/gears, and, of course, theelectrical side of the operation aswell as the PCM.The very first thing I do before

turning nuts and bolts is check theoil. Oil is an essential part of mostVVT systems. Dirty oil and the lackof regular oil changes can leave a

buildup of sludge or debrisin the passages that lead tothe pressure control valvethat operates the variablevalve timing. If the oil isdirty and too much sludgeaccumulates at the valveports, the sludge can bepassed on through the camand the valve assembly. Then, the oil passages in the

cam can be compromised andcould result in a cam failuredue to scored journals. Keepin mind that the VVT systemis not operated at a normaldriving condition rpm. For example, Honda’s VTEC sys-tem doesn’t operate below4,500 rpm. So, if you havesomeone who never gets thecar out on the highway andnever changes the oil, youcan have a potential problem

waiting to happen, if and when thecar is revved up above 4,500 rpm thenext time it heads onto an on-ramp ofthe local interstate highway.Code P0521 (Oil pressure sensor/

switch range/performance) could bean indication of the quality of the engine oil. It might not be the best diagnostic answer, but when I’veseen this code on several vehicles, theoil was black and neglected. In somecases, the code can also indicate that

the wrong type of oil has been used. I wouldn’t use thisas the final solution to the problem with variable valvetiming, but rather an indication of things to come. Lack of regular maintenance seems to be the big

factor in most of these systems. Unlike vehicles fromyears gone by where certain maintenance issues could

be neglected, these newer engines and newer systems require the utmost in care. Stressing this point to yourcustomers and performing the required basic mainte-nance per the manufacturer’s schedule will safeguardtheir vehicle and increase your profits.

Outlook for the Future

In my opinion, VVT will be as common as a sparkplug in the near future. Reducing emissions and re-ducing the need for an EGR valve, improving fueleconomy and getting more performance out of smallerengines tells me that the VVT systems are here to stay. The next generation of VVT systems are on the draw-

ing boards now, and it won’t be long before they’ll bein the marketplace. With the latest requirements infuel economy emerging, engines with variable valvetiming will become the norm, so it’s time to get aheadof the curve now. TS
