“I made the right choice.”
BARISTA
When Tech Mahindra Foundation opened the SMART centre in Sunder Nagri, Amreen Multani was thrilled, and joined the course in
Customer Relationships and Sales (CRS). An enthusiastic and fast learner, Amreen was soon conversing in English, interacting with the
right mix of the verbal communication and body language. She was offered a job with Barista, where her abilities and performance led her
to be promoted to a higher level immediately after her induction. “Thank you, Tech Mahindra Foundation, for convincing my parents to let
me join the SMART centre”, says Amreen, whose father works as a carpenter and mother is a homemaker. Amreen is the only earning
sibling in the family of four brothers. “It is not just about the job. The confidence that surges inside me is a great motivation”, chuckles
Amreen, who wants to manage an entire coffee store by herself in days to come.

The SMART Need
Tech Mahindra Foundation’s SMART programme
started with a vision of an educated, enlightened and employed
India. The Foundation believes that educated and skilled young women
and men are the country’s true strength.
Tech Mahindra Foundation started with 3 SMART centres in 2012, and is currently running 65 centres
of excellence at 10 locations across India. These include SMART centres, SMART+ centres (training for
people with disabilities) and SMART-T centres (training in technical trades), and the SMART Academy.
Youth graduating from these centres have successfully filled the demand-supply gap across multiple industries
and the service sector.

19-year old Murali was a typical case of a farmer’s son moving to the town in search of a better future, who encountered the urban
hardships before opportunities. He spent his earlier days at a Honda showroom, wondering how to utilize himself better. Upon learning
about SMART, he enrolled for a course in Office Administration. Within 3 months, transformed from a boy who struggled to put
sentences together, to a young man who greets customers in a crisply ironed uniform, a heartwarming smile and neatly-put together
phrases, at the Skoda Auto dealership, where he now works as the Workshop Supervisor in the spray painting department. Each day,
he worked harder. His trainers remember him as a cheerful boy, who was always hungry for knowledge. “The last few months have
completely turned my life around. It feels great”, he says.
“I rose from a car washer to a workshop supervisor.”

Trainers at the SMARcentre at Hyderabad recall the first call that Shilpa made to the centre. She sounded low and quietly took down
all the details, readying herself for an entrance test and a personal interview at the centre. Her father, a rector, earns little money for
a family of five. The 23-year old hardworking young woman from a little-known suburb of Hyderabad was a brilliant student, who strug-
gled because of lack of good people skills and command over written and spoken English. Shilpa enrolled for a course in Tally. After train-
ing hard for 3 months in Tally, mastering the software, and strengthening her spoken skills, she picked up her first job with Stanley
Black and Decker as an accountant. In the next placement session, she was chosen by Genpact as a Process Associate. Shilpa says,
“I’m thankful to my trainers and Tech Mahindra, for all the support and motivation”.

Kiran is a pleasant and cheerful girl with ambition to succeed. In one of her motivational sessions at a SMART+ training, she tells this
story: hailing from a small village Daria in Chandigarh, an innocent and shy girl dared to dream beyond what was allowed. A person with
orthopaedic disabilities, she dreamt of independence. In spite of resistance from her family, particularly her brother, she joined the
SMART+ centre soon after graduation, and discovered her skills as a communicator. Her active participation in group discussions,
presentations and other activities helped hone her innate skills. She jumped at the opportunity to interview with Dr IT, a BPO dealing
with telecom customers, for a communications-based profile, and aced it. Kiran is enjoying her work, and cherishes the atmosphere at
her workplace. She stays in touch with SMART and Tech Mahindra Foundation, and gratefully acknowledges them as ' the team bring-
ing dreams to reality'.

concepts of wiring, connections and appliances, and also learnt basics of electrical repairs. While working hard in the course, he also
kept in touch with prospective employers through the Foundation. In a placement session, Sunny was the favorite choice of Bharat
Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and he was placed as an Electrical Trainee with a salary of INR 8,000/- at Gurgaon, with a

Subarna’s life changed when firstly her father lost his job and she was introduced to the SMART programme. Born and brought up in
Belgharia (West Bengal), Subarna was an only child. Unable to find a job, she became depressed and melancholy. Then one day, she
heard about SMART and enrolled in the course on Customer Relationships and Sales (CRS). Day by day, she diligently learned the finer
ways of corporate life, and became a better groomed person. When interviews happened, she was readily absorbed by Pantaloons as
a Team Mate with a decent salary, and benefits like PF and ESI. “More students like me, who come from poor economic backgrounds,
should join SMART and be self-reliant”, says Subarna.

transformed his life! Tanaji’s first job was as a Folding Merchandizer with Max Fashion, a venture of the Landmark Group in Mumbai.
He is financially independent, and now supports his younger sister's education. He wants to pursue higher studies and earn much
more. “It is great to first study, and now, work with friends. We get to spend a lot of time together,” he expresses. His mentor at Max

“The best part was, they saw a team leader in a fresher.”
per annum
Pradeep remembers himself as a shy boy who grew into an introverted young adult with low self-esteem. With a father who worked as
a car driver, a mother – a home maker, and a sister who was in school, the family struggled to make ends meet. Pradeep was unable
to find a way out of the maze, till he met another SMART graduate. He was excited to see his friend transform and secure a job. He
immediately visited the SMART Centre at Chennai and enrolled for a course in Hospitality. The next three months transformed Pradeep
– he gained confidence, his way of communicating changed, and he started aspiring for more and more. “I was amazed at the revela-
tion of my own inner capabilities, which hitherto lay masked under my shyness”, he says. In no time, Pradeep got a chance to interview
for a Customer Relationships Executive profile with Aircel. “It was surprising. They have picked me up as a Team Leader instead”, he
was elated.

The SMART Research In addition to developing high-quality curriculum in consultation with the internal team
and external experts, the Foundation also invests in research on
employability and skilling in India and abroad to keep
abreast with the latest developments, and
create a sound knowledge base.
The TMF-NSDA research will be a quantitative-qualitative study with a focus on understanding different facets of the
system and devising a future strategy for the sector, specifically for the Foundation’s SMART programme. While certain
aspects of the study would entail quantitative analysis to substantiate the findings, the focus of the study would be largely qualitative.
The Foundation has undertaken a research project in vocational
education and training project (RiVET), along with the National Skill Development
Authority (NSDA), as the first step in this direction. The research will try to understand
the overall scope of skill development in India, through a study on current practices and policies.
The study will come up with recommendations for the industry, policymakers as well as skill development
providers, so as to fill gaps and improved the quality of training imparted.
Edulever is the knowledge partner in this research.
