Executive Summary
Tech & Digital Salary Survey - Sydney 2019/2020
This financial year has been a time of increasing confidence in the NSW market. Despite the usual pre-election uncertainty, the end result has given the state a further boost with the delivery of a consistent message for the commercial sector. We’ve certainly noticed increased demand in some areas, with DevOps, Agile Coaching, Scrum and Full Stack Development being the hot markets. Another note of significance is the significant increase in the “drive for diversity” within teams. While it has been challenging from a candidate supply perspective (with IT professionals often faced with multiple opportunities), this just highlights the importance of recognising good talent and acting quickly.
On the candidate front, there has been some change over the last 12 months, with the previously discussed hot markets prompting a decrease in supply of available talent. Supplementing local candidates is interstate and international relocation, which is becoming more prevalent for niche skills that are required for projects and implementations throughout Australia. Although, there is still a reluctance to go down the sponsorship route due to the cost and risk of professional and cultural misalignment. We’ve also noticed a clear change in candidate expectations. It’s not just about salary increases though, with training, culture and workplace flexibility increasingly becoming prioritised during the decision-making process.
In terms of in-demand skills, DevOps (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), UX/CX, Full Stack Development, Digital Marketing (SEO and SEM), Agile Coaching and Scrum, seem to be the priority. We’ve noticed that a lot of organisations appear less enthusiastic about training candidates, signalling a preference for people that can come in and hit the ground running. However, there is a slowly increasing appetite when it comes to “hiring for attitude”, where candidates can be developed for success over the long term.
Looking to the upcoming year, with ongoing competition for niche talent, we’re expecting salaries and contract rates to continue being driven upwards. With confidence in the market also increasing, a natural upturn in recruitment activity is the likely result. The shift towards a candidate-short market (in some areas) is expected to place even more pressure on the demand for top skills.
For employers, diversity is likely to continue being a prevalent issue. This is something that can certainly be addressed, providing businesses understand that to achieve a diversity goal, additional investment in training and development of new hires woud be required.
All data and commentary in this report has been sourced using a combination of severalmethods, including our job placement data, interview data and feedback from our consultants.
We’ve also noticed a clear change in candidate expectations. It’s not just about salary increases though, with training, culture and workplace flexibility increasingly becoming prioritised during the decision-making process.
